It describes the transition from city marketing to city branding by identifying the roots of city marketing in general marketing theory, by adapting the concept of corporate-level marketing for the needs of cities and by analysing in depth the components and processes involved in city branding. The thesis contends that city branding, if understood well and applied properly, is a powerful tool at the disposal of contemporary cities. The theoretical sections are supplemented by an investigation of actual city marketing practices in three major European cities, namely Amsterdam, Budapest and Athens. Although Rio lost its status as the political capital of Brazil after nearly 200 years, extensive urban renewal campaigns to modernize the city were employed by numerous politicians, planners, architects, artists, and ordinary residents to help restore Rio's position as Brazil's "true" capital city. This dissertation examines these urban renewal efforts in Guanabara from 1960 to 1975 - a period when Rio de Janeiro experienced its largest period of population and spatial growth. Whereas many of the urban renewal campaigns and projects for development prior to 1945 were intended to beautify, embellish, and "civilize" the city, the projects of the 1960s and 1970s were highly technical and revolved around integrating the automobile into the urban landscape. The measures of investment and resources devoted to modernizing and reforming the city during the Guanabara period were unprecedented for Rio de Janeiro, consequently resulting in significant spatial, social, cultural, and economic reorganization of the city. "Tunnel Vision: Urban Renewal in Rio de Janeiro, 1960-1975" examines specific projects of urban renewal such as tunnels (Rebouças and Santa Bárbara), expressways, parks (Aterro do Flamengo), subways, overpasses, and beaches while also exploring the technocratic approach to urban planning which was demonstrated through attitudes and principles that often marginalized "non-expert" participation in reforming the city. Using diverse primary sources such as government and urban planning documents, as well as neighborhood association materials, this dissertation also considers broader historical issues such as the politics and culture of military regimes, as well as questions related to the built environment, comparative planning cultures, space, class, race, ethnicity, and popular culture. Furthermore, this study also argues that the politics and culture of urban planning in Rio de Janeiro during the Guanabara period mirrored many of the same political, cultural, and social tensions that existed throughout Brazil and Latin America before and after the Brazilian military coup of 1964. Or la notion de ville créative met sérieusement au défi cette échelle métropolitaine de gouvernance, axée exclusivement sur la centralité au détriment des périphéries de la métropole. In this short paper dedicated to the memory of the work of Bernard Jouve, we address ourselves to the notion of the creative city. We had opportunity to work extensively with Jouve on questions of metropolitan governance and the constitution of new modes of governance (or urban regimes). On the basis of this collaboration, we occupy ourselves here with the importance of the notion of the creative city in the particular context of Toronto where, in spite of the absence of strong metropolitan institutions, a certain regional governance has begun to emerge nonetheless. Yet, the dominant concept of the creative city has proceeded in defiance of the metropolitan scale and has been built entirely on urban centrality at the expense of the urban peripheries. With the help of two powerful public figures in Toronto, Richard Florida and David Pecaut, we propose a critique of that concept of the creative city. This is done by outlining some of the characteristics of two 'marginal' forms of rural resettlement taking place in Britain: new initiatives in crofting in Scotland and a revival in back-to-the-land ideas in England. Whilst their importance may be appreciated in their own right, this is enhanced by considering briefly both the historical tradition of back-to-the- land movements in Britain and the contemporary presence of such activities in other European countries. The analysis is based primarily on qualitative sources relating to urban life and to the relationship with the city environment during the period 1880-1914, a time when cities underwent intense transformations associated with modernity and industrialisation. The discourses and representations examined in this study were produced by a wide range of urban actors, including elected officials and municipal bureaucrats, industrialists, urban reformers, factory and housing inspectors, workers, doctors, hygienists, writers, artists and ordinary citizens. This was a period in which the city was increasingly conceptualised as a total, organic object. Consequently, the thesis first examines representations, both critical and celebratory, of these cities in their entirety, showing how the discourse about urban space was constructed through experiences with, and perceptions of, its materiality. The subsequent chapters examine, in turn, spaces of industrial production, homes and the streets. In each of these spaces, representations of these changing environments were produced in marked reference to the body and the senses. In a time marked by the rise of scientific and rational thought, the sources consulted demonstrate the centrality of personal and subjective experiences in the construction of understandings of the city. Analysing these specific milieus also affords the opportunity to consider the cultural significance of the body, as well as its place in the social tensions that characterised the period. The comparative approach through which these cities are analysed illuminates the development of similar processes in analogous, yet discrete, contexts. In this way, certain specificities of Brussels and Montreal, as well the commonalities they shared, are brought to light. The principal objective of this bipartite perspective, however, is to demonstrate, in reference to two local examples, how urban dwellers interiorised vast processes of global transformation by means of their bodies, the spaces through which they moved on a daily basis, as well as their immediate socio-cultural context. Se penchant sur les cas de Montréal et de Bruxelles en comparaison, cette thèse examine la façon dont, à travers la perception sensorielle et les pratiques corporelles des citadins, la signification sociale et culturelle de l’espace urbain se construit. L’analyse se base principalement sur des sources discursives témoignant de la vie urbaine et du rapport à l’espace d’une multitude d’acteurs durant la période 1880-1914, traversée par d’intenses transformations liées à la modernité et à l’industrialisation. Les discours émanant des élus et des fonctionnaires municipaux, des industriels, des réformateurs urbains, des inspecteurs d’usines et de logements, des ouvriers, des médecins, des hygiénistes, des écrivains, des artistes et de simples citoyens ont été consultés. S’agissant d’une époque où la ville est de plus en plus conceptualisée dans sa totalité, la thèse aborde, dans un premier temps, les discours, à la fois critiques et élogieux, concernant la ville industrielle dans son ensemble, en montrant comment ceux-ci sont construits par rapport à l’expérience et aux perceptions de la matérialité urbaine. Puis, dans les chapitres subséquents, les lieux de production industrielle, le logement et les rues sont examinés successivement. Dans chacun de ces types d’espace, les discours faisant état de l’intensification des transformations à l’environnement se déclinent, de façon prononcée, en référence au corps et aux sens. Ils témoignent de la place prépondérante des expériences personnelles et subjectives dans la construction du rapport à l’espace urbain, et ce à une époque marquée par la montée de la pensée scientifique et rationnelle. L’analyse de ces milieux permet aussi de mettre en relief la façon dont se construit la signification culturelle du corps, ainsi que la place de celui-ci dans l’évolution des tensions sociales caractéristiques de l’époque. À travers une approche comparative, l’étude de ces deux villes permet d’examiner l’évolution de processus similaires dans deux contextes analogues, mais distincts. Ainsi est-il possible de déceler certaines spécificités de Bruxelles et de Montréal, de même que des traits communs aux deux villes. Cependant, l’apport principal de cette perspective croisée est de montrer, à la lumière de deux exemples locaux, la manière dont les citadins intériorisent de vastes processus globaux de transformation par le biais de leur corps, des espaces qu’ils fréquentent quotidiennement, et de leur contexte socioculturel immédiat. Une action ciblée tout d’abord sur la formation et qualification professionnelle de ses agents ayant montré des limites liées à la sexualisation des rôles, la municipalité s’est alors engagée sur une voie plus ambitieuse visant à mieux articuler les temps des citoyens, à fournir de nouveaux services ou aménager les services existants, à réfléchir sur l’aménagement de l’espace, afin de réduire les « temps contraints » et rapprocher les temps de vie des femmes et des hommes. The increasing power of feminine professional activities has brought into light a new problematic of time schedule articulation. The persistence of the “Mister Breadwinner” model, which calls for women being at all times available for domestic and family tasks, results in the overstuffing of women’s time schedules; this hinders their possibility of entering the labour market, of implicating in citizen activities, and more globally impedes their autonomy as well as their ability to participate in the higher decisional spheres. Taking into account these gender inequalities, about ten years ago, the city of Rennes has adopted an “equality policy”. Its first action focused on the formation and the professional qualification of its agents, but there soon appeared limits to this action, linked to a sexual differenciation of functions. This led the city of Rennes to opt for a more ambitious path, aiming to better articulate its citizen’s time schedules, either by providing new services or improving the ones already in place, and also by rethinking the planning of urban space in order to reduce “obligatory time schedules”, permitting as a result a better conciliation between women and men of their normal life “time schedule”. The area of study is Quebec City, whereas most of the work relies on single-family property transactions that occurred during the 1986-1987 and 1993-2001 periods. A phone survey held between 2000 and 2002 gave additional information on the choice criteria and household profiles of 800 of these actual property buyers. In a first chapter, the impact of the surrounding land use and vegetation is measured using hedonic modelling. Land-use data are extracted from both a mosaic of aerial photographs, and from a Landsat TM-5 image. Various measures of land use, at different spatial scales, are introduced within the hedonic models. More specifically, the heterogeneous impact of vegetation, depending on relative proximity to the Main Activity Centre, is shown. In a second chapter, motivations for moving and residential and neighbourhood choice criteria are analysed. A Correspondence Analysis underscores the links between choice criteria and the psychological and geographical theories of Place-Identity and perception spaces. Also, logistic regressions measure the odds of mentioning a criteria depending on the household profile and location. Previous tenure status, age, income, household structure and location are significantly related to various residential choice criteria. Finally, in a third chapter, the household-level data are introduced within the hedonic framework, using Casetti’s expansion method and Geographically Weighted Regressions. The heterogeneity of implicit prices is analysed regarding the buyer’s household profile. Not only does the marginal value of certain attributes vary regarding the buyer’s profile, but it appears that income and previous tenure status have a direct impact on property values. This thesis, through the development of new methods aiming at analysing residential markets and residential choices, contributes to further understanding the complex links between the socio-demographic dimension of households, their residential choice criteria, and the spatial structure of Quebec City. Le territoire d’étude couvre la ville de Québec, tandis que l’essentiel des analyses repose sur l’analyse de transactions effectuées pendant les périodes 1986-1987 et 1993-2001. De plus, une enquête téléphonique réalisée entre 2000 et 2002 a permis d’obtenir des informations complémentaires sur les critères de choix et le profil socio-démographique de quelque 800 ménages acheteurs de propriétés unifamiliales à Québec. Dans un premier chapitre, l’impact de l’utilisation du sol et plus particulièrement de la végétation est analysée, en ayant recours à la modélisation hédonique. Les données d’utilisation du sol, extraites de photos aériennes et d’une image satellite, sont compilées au sein d’un système d’information géographique, et ce, à différentes échelles. L’impact de la végétation, variable selon la proximité au centre ville, est clairement démontré. Dans un deuxième chapitre, les motivations liées au déménagement et les critères de choix de la résidence et du quartier par les ménages acheteurs sont étudiés. Une analyse des correspondances souligne le lien entre les critères de choix exprimés et les théories cognitive et géographique de « place-identity » et d’espaces de perception. Aussi, des régressions logistiques mesurent la probabilité d’exprimer un critère en fonction du profil du ménage et de la localisation. Le fait d’avoir ou non été préalablement propriétaire, l’âge, le type de ménage, le revenu, le niveau d’éducation ainsi que la localisation sont des facteurs significativement liés à divers critères de choix. Enfin, dans un troisième et dernier chapitre, les données décrivant le ménage sont introduites dans deux types de modèles hédoniques, les uns ayant recours à l’expansion spatiale et les autres utilisant les « Geographically Weighted Regressions ». L’hétérogénéité des valeurs implicites est alors analysée en considérant le profil des ménages. Il apparaît non seulement que la valeur marginale de plusieurs attributs varie en fonction du ménage acheteur, mais que le revenu et le statut de l’acheteur (ancien vs. nouveau propriétaire) ont un impact direct sur le prix d’achat de la propriété.
