<text>Nationality, Birth Place and other Approaches : Comparative Relevance to Analyze Schooling in France.

A recent research used data available in the 1989 French Education Longitudinal Study to investigate differences in school performance and school trajectories between foreign children, immigrants' children, children born in France from parents born abroad and other pupils. In this research, eight criteria were used to approach the population under focus : nationality (2 or 7 categories), birth place, number of schooling years outside France, language spoken at home, membership group of the pupil and number of foreign attributes. The paper presents the general methodology of the research, establishes systematic comparisons between criteria in order to evaluate their pertinence for sociology of education and summarizes the main results of the research.</text>

<text>Intra-urban residential migrations in le Havre and Rouen,
Among the 49.650.000 inhabitants living within the French boundaries in 1968 and considering the number of deaths which occurred in the meantime, a little more than 21 million inhabitants (i.e. 42.5 % out of the total population) were no longer living in the same place in 1975. The study of migration levels between communes reveals that only 13 million have moved to another commune and that out of this number 3.7 million have moved within the same urban area: therfore, during these 7 years, 8 million (i.e. more than 16 % of the 1968 census) have moved within the commune where they had been registered at the beginning of the inter-censal period. In the very communes belonging to urban areas which count more than 100.000 inhabitants this proportion nearly reaches 20 % of the 1968 census that is to say 40 % of the national migration. A percentage which should not be underestimated as far as residential migrations are concerned; now, before the study of the 1975 census covering the 1968-1975 period, it was almost impossible — at least in France — to analyse these migrations always excepting inquiries which were inevitably punctual or the studying of non-specific data. This period was the first one which it became possible to measure these migrations thoroughly; indeed it shows that in the city of Le Havre more than 30 % of the 1968 residents have moved within the limits of the same commune when less than 50 % had not moved at all, seven years later.
For the 1975-1982 period, the proportion of intra-urban residential migrants falls slightly, but hardly more than 40 % have not moved at all. For either one of these inter-censal periods, intra-urban migrations have altered the population of the neighbourhoods much more than extra-urban migrations have done it. In Rouen, on account of a different spatial distribution of the urban area and because of its high levels of migration, intra-urban migrations are much more reduced but still, non-migrants are comparatively far less numerous : less than 40 % for the single city of Rouen 43 % for the surrounding communes, between 1968 and 1975.
The enumeration of the births which occurred during the inter-censal period — a few of them occurring before the residential migration of the family — the enumeration of the deaths, the reconstitution of the original population: these are some of the restraining statistics which should be overcome at first. Then one should go beyond the literal interpretation of the migration trends, (though it may reveal wide variations) and address to a qualitative study of the migrations: unfortunately when the geographer gets down to the neighbourhoods of the city, the data issued from the census are not easily available which undermines the feasibility of such an inquiry; but still, it would be very interesting to investigate the neighbourhoods where out-migration and in-migration take place so as to determine the role of these migrations upon the observed mutations. Nevertheless, it is possible to determine some of the characteristics of these migrations (their age, their birth and growth rates and when statistics are sufficient, their social status) and to highlight their distinctive features when compared to other categories of migrations. Here we are confronted to an unexplored field of investigation; but still it opens new fields of investigation into the type of residence acquired and into the different processes related to spatial developments in urban areas.</text>

If the residential mobility of the inhabitants of the French main towns seems to have been the same approximately during the last intercensal period as between 1968 and 1975, the intra-urban mobility alone was somewhat reduced while the migratory balance fell. The values are very variable here and there and the order has changed. The first investigations into the characteristics of the populations concerned reveal very contrasted age structures for each population category and a certain specificity according to each agglomeration. The contrasts in the socio-professional structures are less marked. At last, it appears that these intra-urban migrations have a particular social and psychological meaning. </text>

<text>Residential mobility in the French great urban centres from 1968 to 1990.

This paper concerns the evolution of residencial mobility of the citizens inside urban centers where they are living, for the last twenty years. This analysis is unfinished owing to the fact of handicaps due to the form which the recent statistical data (Census of 1990) are now available: it is not possible particularly to isolate the residential changes between communes in each urban center from those between all the French communes. Nevertheless, it appears that the residential mobility has been clearly less intense and less variing between 1982 to 1990 than during the two previous intercensal périodes, chiefly to the detriment, (?...), of the intra-communal mobility. </text>

The author proposes to use the intra-urban residential mobility as an indicator of the internal dynamics of cities. He describes very meticulousnessly the evolution of residential behaviour in a middle town, Le Havre, between the four last French censuses. The decomposition of flows and the observation of their links with the change of urban surroundings allow to differentiate the space, using an own methodology which combines the stages of life cycle, the evolution of the household structure and the permanences and changes of the «town places». </text>

The progress made in schooling for all stands out even more in the towns where the biggest schools and universities are to be found. However, disparities still exist and sometines are intensified for some groups or places. The survey carried out in the urban area of Bordeaux sheds some light on the means contrived by an educational society, the reality of differentiated poles and the inequality of chances in a given area. Beyond the «democratization» of secondary schooling, which is a always the main concern, one can but wonder if the progress underway will not add even more to the social and spatial diversification of professional channels in the town. </text>

<text>Sport Used as a Means of Integrating Immigrants' Children

The immigrants' children who have benefited from physical education classes at school generally find through this channel a means of fitting in with the behavioural patterns of the youth of the country which has become their homeland. Sport thus becomes a means of integration allowing many of them to take part in various forms of sports culture. Our aim here is to suggest a global approach to the phenomenon considering the changes in the socio-spatial integration of immigrants' children living in France and the plans implemented in the areas where their numbers are exceedingly high.</text>

Grande-Synthe is an example of a mushroom town related with the growth of the Usinor iron and steel plant, located on the dunkirkian coast in the sixties. Since the middle of the seventies, a housing vacancy process appeared and increased in some neighbourhoods of the housing scheme. This paper analyses, beyond the context of the economic crisis and the downgrading way of life in the high rise housing blocks, the responsibilities of the public an private agents in this process. Then it assesses the chances of eliminating the phenomenon. On the other hand, housing vacancy appears as a good indicator for residential mobility and the evolution of social differences in an urban area.</text>

<text>Rouen: spatial extension and quantitative slackening of counter-urbanization
Central Pays de Caux (cantons of Fauville and Yvetot) is very representative of the inversion of population growth at the expense of towns and to the benefit of country, which occurred in France during the decade 1970-1980. Because demographic rural growth is basically the result of a positive migratory balance, the analysis of migrations is particularly instructive.
The first stage of the study is a systemic exploratory model in which immigration mainly consists in «rurbanisation» (counterurbanisation) from large cities, in return of adults born in country and in population coming from "deep Caux" (the more rural and urban-distant part of Caux), while emigration is essentially made up of young people.
Two communes (Allouville-Bellefosse and Alvimare) have been selected for an analysis of migrations based on several sources: a special survey (a quarter of the households), the study of election file and planning permission file. The nature of migrants is first investigated (where are they coming from? where are they going to?, what are their age structure and occupations?) before the analysis of their motivations. Considering the results r of surveys, some premises of the model must be challenged. Counterurbanisation from Rouen is quite negligible and migration from "deep Caux" has been strongly reduced recently. Three main immigration shifts may be observed: The settling of workers coming from Yvetot and small industrial towns in the neighbouring Seine valley and more recently from Le Havre, because of cheap building land for sale in housing estates; a return of adults born in country (expected in the model, but less important than the first flow) which are settling preferably outside the housing estates, particularly the "white collars"; at last the coming of tertiary population mainly employed in services induced in villages by the population growth. Emigrants are mainly the young less than 25 years old who are leaving considering the lack of cheap rental houses in rural space, but also the elderly, because of the lack of amenities in scattered hamlets.
The paper ends with an interrogation on prospects of population growth in suburban rural spaces. It seems that paradoxically the movement is quantitatively and globally slowing down, but carries on its spatial extension.</text>

<text>The Recent Dynamics of Settlement in the Border Regions of Walloonia.

For some years, certain localities have stopped losing their inhabitants and present, on the contrary, a spectacular population growth. This change is due to a strong migratory attraction, which takes place in a double context, both national and international. At the country level, the recent immigration toward these regions lies within the process of periurbanisation: people and families migrate to parkland, sometimes distant from their work place. At the international level, the origin is the free circulation of the goods that has transformed border spaces into transborder regions. This paper studies, on the long trend and in a comparative approach, the demographic dynamics of municipalities located along the border with Germany and the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg. Thanks to the linkage between the individual data of the national register and the 1991 population census, we analyse the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the populations who set up in these border regions between 1993 and 1998.</text>

A better knowledge of the demographic evolution since the beginning of the 18th century shows that the originality of China lies mostly in the sustained growth during part of the last centuries of the traditional demographic regime. The demographic transition, however, seems to have taken place from the interwar years onwards, following a classic pattern - first, a lasting decline of mortality, a decrease in fertility starting in the early stages of the People's Republic.</text>

In Picardy, services are not developped comparatively with other French regions. What are the grounds of this situation? The author has analyzed the structures of regional population by social categories and level of education. The outflows of the course of studies are not enough qualified. In another way, we can observe that manufacture's employment creates too little jobs in service industries. The neighbourhood of Paris is also a ground of this economical structure. </text>

<text>Social welfare and the elderly in France. Geographical aspects.

Social welfare expenditure for elderly people occupies third place after expenditures for children and for handicapped people. The Ministry of Social Affairs and of National Welfare estimates that they from 15 per cent of their budget and that the costs have increased threefold since the mid-1970s. In the light of recent trends in French fertility, the ageing of the population can only increase for a time. The social costs of the demographic trend must be established and the geographical implications investigated. The latter requires the comparative examination of contrasting regions so that the overall level of social welfare expenditure per capita elderly person is established. The explanatory factors of general relevance will be underlined.</text>
