</text>

First we give for Avignon urban area some examples of these inequalities in the case of space-time accessibility to stores. Then we discuss the means to reduce them by acting on the temporal part of accessibility (opening hours of the shops) and on its spatial part (location of the shops and means of transportation to join them). </text>

<text>Judging from the number of communities and cities striving or claiming to be sustainable and how often eco-development is invoked as the means for urban regeneration, it appears that sustainable and eco-development have become "the leading paradigm within urban development" (Whitehead 2003). But what is it that is driving these urban transformations? Clearly, there are many probable answers to this complex question and in what follows we will focus on one particular catalyst of change - urban design competitions. Considered as field changing events (Lampel & Meyer 2008, Anand and Jones 2008), urban design competitions are understudied mechanisms for bringing about field level changes. This paper examines how urban design competitions can bring about changes within two types of fields - professional fields and local geographical fields. The context for our study is urban regeneration in two cities in France and Denmark, both of which have been suffering from industrial decline and have invested in establishing "eco-districts". Based on these two case studies we explore how the different parties involved in these urban development projects have developed innovative design templates and practices that can instantiate field level changes.</text>

<text>Perth, Western Australia - a city become region one hundred kilometres in length and expanding yet - is a place variously adored and scorned; one noted widely for its landscape and its horizon, and relatively rarely for its architecture. Young, low lying, and sparsely lined with built form, Perth might be described as a thin city. The intent of this research is to entreat an optimistic and inquisitive reading of the city of Perth through the conceptualisation of a set of six narrative threads. Six fictive interpretations of Perth, each denoting qualities of thinness, are cast toward the factual city, inviting both confirmation and opposition to their themes. They are: private city, wide city, even city, city of the immediate future, reserve city and city of form fixation. The process of elucidating and questioning the presence of these narratives allows for thicknesses to emerge from the city region; latencies with which the city can be redressed. The mechanism for directing this interpretive view of the city is the process of mapping. Each narrative thread has been explored through the formulation of a set of maps as a visual text. Through the paired workings of the narratives and the mappings, opportune conditions and operations are uncovered within the thin city, complexities that belie the ubiquity of its surface. Mappings shift in scope from the scale of the region to a site of richness at its core, sampling out entities, structures and performative processes at work in the city's plan, distilling opportune sites that are then explored via the architectural project. At once analytical and synthetic, mappings identify existing points of intrigue and simultaneously invite their extrapolation. With the thin city narratives driving the content of the maps and forming the basis for their projectual exploration, this research seeks to engage with the nascent city and offer to it an armature for its amplification that operates within the city's delirium, its peculiarity, its distinctiveness.</text>

</text>

<text>The Actual Challenge of Major American Central Cities in the Era of Métropolisation.

For a century now, the metropolitan level has been part of the US Census survey (metropolitan districts). At the beginning, the concentration movement in the central-city was the major trend ; but since World War II, the development of metropolitan areas is the main evolution of urban America. The Concentric Zone Model structured around the influent core of the inner city is quite obsolete : now, the Multiple Nuclei Model shows us the relative demographical, economical and social weakness of central cities. The Census 2000 data doesn't report a radical change in this unbalanced urban morphology evolution but some authors point out the resurgence of major central cities. The diffusion of smart growth programs, in response to the negative impacts of urban sprawl, and the international immigration seam to be the main reasons of this renewal.</text>

<text>Post-war residential areas and local housing markets in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Housing Demand Survey of 1980 has been used to compare the developments in the post-war built housing stock of the four large cities, the middle-sized cities and the suburban municipalities in the Netherlands. An overview of the national housing system after 1945, which is characterized by strong State intervention - often by means of municipal regulations, leads to an understanding of the composition of the housing stock on different degrees of tightness of the housing market in the three groups of municipalities. They cause specific conditions for the functioning of the local markets.
Future neighbourhood change will not depend on the cyclic or linear course of events predicted by the current theories of neighbourhood change, nor on the national trends, but on the structure of the local housing markets, with specific functions for particular dwelling types, according to their supply, demand and accessibility.</text>

An analysis of the epistemological aspects of the project and the context of the period shows that, despite : the , lack : of theoretical certitudes to underpin the; discipline of town planning, it was nevertheless based on a number of legitimate sources and, at the same time, crystallised the social stakes involved. Academics involved were all the more ready to accept this powerful social image as they all had connections with town planning, which testifies to the role . played by extra-scientific criteria in the : judgement of professors at the time.</text>

In the population of France appear great general trends, as aging, increase, of the lifespan, périurbanisation, ...However, according to the regions, evolutions are different. Thus, densities show an increase of the regional divergences. On the other hand, the spreading of a low fecondity and a failing birth-rate entail a lowering of the divergences between the regional demographic behaviours. But the regional migratory sys- terns appear much diversified and have, among others, important consequences on the distribution by ages of the populations of the regions. Finally, there is a new paradox between some convergent evolutions and others that are nearly divergent.</text>
