<text>When studying heritage architecture, and trying to represent and understand the development of artefacts, one should not only examine key moments in their evolution, but describe the whole process of their transformation - thereby correlating contextual causes and architectural consequences. In this contribution, we introduce a methodological framework of description of architectural changes, the corresponding visual tools, and finally present elements of evaluation. The results we report show the description framework favours information discovery: cross-examination of cases, analysis of causal relations, patterns of change, etc.</text>

<text>The aim of every politician is to transform the city into an environmentally sustainable entity. However, while the planning and organisation of passenger services within cities is commonly perceived as a major issue, freight transport is not given the full attention it deserves. As a general rule, the role which freight transport plays in the economy of cities is simply not understood. What invariably attracts attention, on the other hand, is the added pollution and congestion caused by freight transport. <br />Europe has recently produced a host of new urban development schemes which place more or less severe restrictions on freight movements in cities. While some cities have introduced measures in line with the town planning objectives of territorial development plans, others have adopted short-term solutions to traffic management problems. Since we know that cities are living entities whose vital processes can be disrupted, how can we be sure that all of these measures are a step in the right direction? France's situation is examined in this communication.</text>

<text>We performed a correspondence testing in order to assess the potential discrimination at job access level against young people of ethnic origin from the underprivileged suburbs of the Paris area (Ilede-France). We measure simultaneously the effects of place of residence (privileged or underprivileged city), of nationality (French or Moroccan), and of sound of surname and of forename (French or Arab), on the chances of obtaining a job interview when answering a job ad. We base our assessment on a controlled experiment conducted on the profession of waiter. We constructed 16 jobseeker profiles and sent 938 resumes in reply to 118 job vacancies advertised at the end of 2006. We obtain two results. First, there is evidence of a significant effect against the candidates with an Arab origin; second, there is evidence of residential discrimination against the candidates that are either the most qualified or of French origin. Overall, discrimination would tend to level down the employment opportunities of the candidates in underprivileged suburbs by putting at a disadvantage the candidates that are usually the most favored.</text>

We find strong local disparities between communes, even when we control for a large number of socio-economic variables. In order to explain this geography, we investigate the effects of the urban structure on unemployment-towork transitions. Our results suggest an extension of Oswald's findings (1999): the unemployment-to-work transitions are lower in the areas that have either a higher than average proportion of housing ownership or a higher proportion of social housing. Furthermore, the former effect appears only when the latter is controlled for.</text>

<text>This study uses the findings of a correspondence testing in order to assess the potential discrimination at job access level against young people of ethnic origin from the underprivileged suburbs of the Paris area (Ile-de-France). We measure simultaneously the effects of place of residence (privileged or underprivileged city), of nationality (French or Moroccan), and of sound of surname and of forename on the chances of obtaining a job interview when answering a job ad. We base our assessment on a controlled experiment conducted on the profession of accountant. We constructed 16 jobseeker profiles and sent 1097 resumes in reply to 140 job vacancies advertised at the end of 2006. We find evidence of a significant discrimination against the candidates with a foreign origin.</text>

<text>This paper shows that living in public housing has no effect on the probability of being unemployed in France, once we account for the endogeneity of public housing. We estimate a simultaneous probit model of unemployment and public housing. On a first sample for Lyon, we instrument public housing with the gender composition of children. On a second national sample, the instrument is the city-level share of public housing. Both samples yield the same conclusion, which we justify by showing that a small amount of selection on unobservables is enough to eliminate the positive effect found in “naive” estimates.</text>

On a first sample, we instrument public housing with the gender composition of children. On a second sample, the instrument is the share of public housing at the city level. We also perform a robustness check that consists in measuring the correlation between unobservables that could explain the effect of public housing on unemployment. As the corresponding level of correlation is low, this check reinforces our result of no effect of public housing on unemployment.</text>

<text>This paper is aimed to examine how individual unemployment is influenced both by location in a deprived neighborhood and public housing. Our identification strategy is twofold. First, because we estimate a simultaneous probit model of public housing accommodation, type of neighborhood, and unemployment, the formal identification of the model relies on non-linearities. Second, we take advantage of the location of the public housing sector in France, which allows us to use public housing accommodation as a powerful determinant of neighborhood choices. Our results show that public housing does not have any direct effect on unemployment. However, living within the 35% more deprived neighborhoods does increase the unemployment probability significantly. As expected, the effect of neighborhood substantially decreases when dealing with the endogeneity of neighborhood and when using public housing as a determinant of neighborhood choice.</text>

An idea based on the hipothesis that the urban experience is inscribed with different levels of stability in the body of one who experiences it, even unintentionally. The city lived spaces resist in the body designed by such experience: they resist in the bodygraphies resulted from their experimentation. Such affect relationships with the city - a process of subjectification that arise from sensory-motor experiences of lived spaces and which the result are ambiences - constitutes, in their different temporalities, a counterpoint to the flat viewing of the city-logo image, the city-outdoor and the scenaries of the ambiences spetacularised and disembodied.</text>

Commuting and shopping trips reveal an increasing jobs, shops and services’ concentration in urban places and a large residential spreading around them. This study tries to replace interurban trips in different space categories (like urban or rural categories) by looking for the way differents grounds can be associated during a whole sequence. The main hypothesis is the existence of major trips generators (like working) relied to a number of secondary grounds (like shops or services). The main statistical source used is the Enquête Transports - Communications INRETS / INSEE 1993-1994 paired with datas from Population Census and Communal Inventory.</text>
