<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> This book explores the history, the reality, and the complex fantasy of American and European Chinatowns and traces the patterns of transnational travel and traffic between China, South East Asia, Europe, and the United States which informed the development of these urban sites. Despite obvious structural or architectural similarities and overlaps, Chinatowns differ markedly depending on their location. European versions of Chinatowns can certainly not be considered mere replications of the American model. Paying close attention to regional specificities and overarching similarities, Chinatowns thus discloses the important European backdrop to a phenomenon commonly associated with North America. It starts from the assumption that the historical and modern Chinatown needs to be seen as complicatedly involved in a web of cultural memory, public and private narratives, ideologies, and political imperatives. Most of the contributors to this volume have multidisciplinary and multilingual backgrounds and are familiar with several different instances of the Chinese diasporic experience. <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Sport is seen as an increasingly important aspect of urban and regional planning. Related programmes have moved to the forefront of agendas for cities of the present and future. This has occurred as the barriers between so-called ‘high’ and ‘popular’ culture continue to disintegrate. Sport is now a key component within strategies for the cultural regeneration of cities and regions, a tendency with mixed outcomes - at times fostering genuinely democratic arrangements, at others pseudo-democratic arrangements, whereby political, business and cultural elites manipulate a sense of sameness and unity among their fellow citizens to smooth the path for the pursuit of what are actually vested interests. Almost any active enactment of a ‘sports city of culture’ risks divisiveness. Recognizing controversies, with both potentially positive and negative outcomes, this book examines sport within contexts of urban and regional regeneration, via a number of rather different case studies. Within these studies, the role of sport stadium development, franchise expansion and sports-fan (and anti-sport) activism is addressed and articulated with issues concerning, inter alia, public funding, environmental impact, urban infrastructure and citizen identity.<br /> <br /> The ‘sport in the city’ project commenced as a research symposium held at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and number of the essays originate from this occasion.<br /> <br /> This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.</div> </div> <b>Michael Sam </b>is Senior Lecturer in Sport Policy and Management at the University of Otago, New Zealand.</div> <b>John E. <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> - Questions the centrality of globalization in explaining change in Asian cities and examines developing Asian cities in their own terms rather than as variants of Western urbanization.<br /> - Explores middle cities ‘off the radar’ as well as well-known metropolises.<br /> - Uses both quantitative and ethnographic research.<br /> <br /> Asian Cities challenges Western paradigms of urban growth with a fresh and stimulating look at cities in developing Asia. It questions the status accorded globalization in explaining contemporary Asian cities, arguing instead that they are being transformed by three major forces – urbanization and nation-building as well as globalization. The latter two are not dependent variables of globalization, although all, in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, are shaped by capitalism.<br /> <br /> The book reaches beyond the usual focus on metropolitan centres to examine urban life in a sample of middle-sized cities representative of hundreds of such urban centres throughout the Asian continent.</div> <br /> An introductory chapter outlines the arguments and introduces the sample cities. Chapters two and three explore two principal facets of urbanization: the material transformation that comes in its train and the impact that it has on the lives of the newly-urbanized. Chapters four to seven explore the way that the national framework shapes cities – including business enterprises, migrantion, travel and commercial popular culture. The main focus of this volume is on urbanity as a discursive way of human life in the city. Discourse is specified here in terms of semiotic codes and processes that link city dwellers as communicating selves into interpersonal and intersubjective collectivities when they create and interpret similar meanings embodied in material bearers. Accordingly, the unfolding of the semiotic web is understood, firstly, as detecting and evaluating the growth and manifestation of the sphere of meaning-bearers or a sequence of meaning-bearing events, and secondly, as identifying and explaining the constituents and aspects of discourse in the light of signs and/or sign-processes that aggregate individual participants of communication into discursive linkages on a lower level and discursive communities - on a higher level of social grouping. Some contributions deal with the discursive properties of human individuals in urban environments, and some others are devoted either to the meta-discourses on the city or discourses in the city.</div>

Tokyo is an archetypal world city. Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul have acquired world city characteristics. On se représente communément les personnes sans abri comme déracinées, exclues du monde social, sans identité saisissable, en errance physique et psychique, hors de tout lieu et de toute durée. Cette image limite, portée par les discours sur la pauvreté, repose sur une assimilation simpliste entre précarité socio-économique et précarité existentielle.<br />
<br />
A partir de ses propres enquêtes de terrain, Claudia Girola montre dans cet opuscule qu'une situation de détresse matérielle et symbolique n'entraîne pas nécessairement la perte des repères fondateurs de l'existence. Au contraire, cette expérience extrême de vie peut conduire à un travail identitaire d’affirmation de soi, rendu possible par une réelle maîtrise de l'espace et du temps – une topographie de la mémoire qui permet de "rester soi-même, malgré tout".</div>

<b>Claudia Girola</b> est docteur en anthropologie, maître de conférences à l'université Paris 7, membre du Centre de représentations et pratiques politiques.<br />
Elle étudie depuis les années 1990 les pratiques identitaires des sans-abri, notamment leurs constructions narratives biographiques et leur mémoire collective dans ces conditions extrêmes de vie, et a publié plusieurs articles à ce sujet.</div>

Developer Del Webb unveiled Sun City six years later. Adjacent to Youngtown, it offered modest homes abutting a golf course. In the ensuing decades, active adult communities have proliferated, including Harold Schwartz’s "The Villages" in central Florida, today the nation’s single largest retirement community.<br /> <br /> For nearly sixty years, the success of these and similar communities have changed the image of retirees from frail, impoverished old people to energetic, well-off adults enjoying a resort-like lifestyle. Latin America has not been the centre of international architectural attention and pilgrimage since the mid 20th century when economic growth triggered the development of Modernist urban design and architecture on an epic scale. Since then the centralised, utopian planned model has broken down. Mass migrations from the countryside and erection of informal settlements have left cities socially and spatially divided. Within this context and in the mist of globalization Latin America is set to go though major change once again.<br /> <br /> In recent decades, resourceful governments and practices have developed innovative approaches to urban design and development, less to do with the utopian and totalitarian schemes and more to do with "urban acupuncture", working within rather than denying the framework of informality to stitch together disparate parts of the city.<br /> <br /> This title of AD will explore the current urban issues faced by Latin American cities and the response of alternative local practitioners at different scales. Ce bilan fait état du parcours des études urbaines au Québec durant la première décennie du XXIe siècle. Relativement récentes, les études urbaines se distinguent par l’interdisciplinarité et une distance critique à l’égard de l’action publique. La création du réseau Villes Régions Monde (VRM), il y a une décennie, a favorisé le renouvellement de ce champ de recherche. Comment sont examinés les grands enjeux urbains contemporains ? Quels sont les outils élaborés par les chercheurs pour en faire l’analyse ? Des thématiques comme l’immigration, les dynamiques communautaires, le développement économique, les réformes institutionnelles et la gouvernance, la mobilité, l’environnement, le patrimoine, les formes d’habitation ou encore les représentations territoriales sont explorées. L’état des lieux dressé par les contributeurs met en perspective le dynamisme de la recherche et tente une certaine prospective des avenues à privilégier. Adoptant une position intermédiaire, entre l’Europe et les Amériques, entre les politiques publiques et les pratiques tant sociales que professionnelles, entre les disciplines des sciences sociales et de l’aménagement, les études urbaines québécoises récentes se caractérisent par de nombreuses recherches empiriques et l’attention soutenue portée aux grands centres urbains. <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> City of Extremes is a powerful critique of urban development in greater Johannesburg since the end of apartheid in 1994. Martin J. Murray describes how a loose alliance of city builders—including real estate developers, large-scale property owners, municipal officials, and security specialists—has sought to remake Johannesburg in the upbeat image of a world-class city. By creating new sites of sequestered luxury catering to the comfort, safety, and security of affluent urban residents, they have produced a new spatial dynamic of social exclusion, effectively barricading the mostly black urban poor from full participation in the mainstream of urban life. This partitioning of the cityscape is enabled by an urban planning environment of limited regulation or intervention into the prerogatives of real estate capital.<br /> <br /> Combining insights from urban studies, cultural geography, and urban sociology with extensive research in South Africa, Murray reflects on the implications of Johannesburg’s dual character as a city of fortified enclaves that proudly displays the ostentatious symbols of global integration and the celebrated “enterprise culture” of neoliberal design, and as the “miasmal city” composed of residual, peripheral, and stigmatized zones characterized by signs of a new kind of marginality. He suggests that the “global cities” paradigm is inadequate to understanding the historical specificity of cities in the Global South, including the colonial mining town turned postcolonial megacity of Johannesburg.</div> </div> <b>Martin J. Murray </b>is Professor of Urban Planning at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and Adjunct Professor at the Center for African and African-American Studies at the University of Michigan.</div> </div>

Tout un pan de la très riche oeuvre scientifique du Recteur Gay est consacré à l'histoire urbaine, et principalement à l'histoire de l’administration de Paris sous l’Ancien Régime et au XIXe siècle. Rassemblant la quasi-totalité de ces articles, le présent ouvrage a pour socle un texte qui en représente les deux tiers et qui a pour titre : "L’administration de la capitale entre 1770 et 1789. La tutelle de la royauté et ses limites". C’est une étude extraordinaire, grâce à laquelle on apprend tout ce que l’on peut avoir besoin de savoir sur la gestion de Paris à la veille de la Révolution. Rien n’est oublié : les institutions parisiennes, leurs rapports entre elles ainsi qu’avec le roi et ses ministres, les finances municipales et la fiscalité s’appliquant à la population, les grands services publics tels que l’alimentation de la ville en eau, l’éclairage urbain, l’évacuation des ordures ou la lutte contre les incendies, l’organisation et le contrôle des approvisionnements, l’urbanisme et tout ce qui concerne les voies publiques et les immeubles riverains, tous les aspects du maintien de l’ordre public (qu’il s’agisse de la délinquance, de la prostitution, des jeux interdits, etc.), les enclaves seigneuriales abritant de la police ceux qui contreviennent à la loi, les mesures favorables à l’hygiène et à la santé. Sur tous ces points, et sur une foule d’autres encore, le texte de Jean Gay est d’une extrême précision, rendue possible par l’utilisation systématique et minutieuse de vastes dépouillements d’archives.<br />
<br />
Écrite voici un demi-siècle, cette œuvre magistrale et extrêmement novatrice de <b>Jean Gay</b> a été entre-temps ponctuellement complétée, par ses propres travaux et par ceux d’autres chercheurs, mais elle n’a pas été égalée et encore moins remplacée. Elle offre une utilité toujours intacte et sa consultation est infiniment fructueuse pour tous ceux qui travaillent sur n’importe quel aspect de l’histoire de Paris (et plus généralement de l’histoire urbaine) au XVIIIe siècle.</div>
