En partant de l'exemple d'Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), l'auteur expérimente cette démarche tout en brossant un panorama des nouvelles approches de l'environnement urbain. Elle montre à quel point la définition universelle de l'environnement urbain est problèmatique, tant il est vrai que l'identité citadine se trouve au fondement de la configuration matérielle de la ville. Elle investit le lien - rarement interrogé en psychologie clinique dans un abord scientifique transversal - établi lors de la création de ces institutions, entre les productions psychiques des fondateurs et les dispositifs architecturaux, que ces derniers peuvent véhiculer de l'origine jusque dans l'actuel, générant un vécu de souffrance psychique chez les soignants, et paralysant la réalisation de la tâche primaire de l'institution. Pour mener à bien ce projet, cette recherche a dû opérer une première mise en adéquation des méthodes propres à la démarche clinique (une analyse des représentations liées à l'architecture des MAS, recueillies par le Photolangage©) et à l'investigation scientifique des objets architecturaux (analyse typomorphologique, révélant identité et diversité des bâtiments). L'apport majeur de cette approche transdisciplinaire consiste en la mise en avant de la fonction de l'architecture comme lieu de fixation et de figuration du psychique dans le matériel. Plus précisément, face au caractère traumatique de la confrontation au polyhandicap, c'est d'un double mouvement animé par le désir de meurtre et le désir de réparation des fondateurs à l'égard du handicapé que naissent les MAS... se présentant fantasmatiquement comme un lieu d'accueil idéal du handicapé. Leur création se fonde en effet sur un projet utopique, bâti contre l'image de l'asile. Cependant, la difficulté des fondateurs à mobiliser leur imaginaire sur cet impensable lieu d'accueil du handicap conduit à la réplication spéculaire de l'institution totalitaire dans la MAS ; l'ancrage fondamental de l'utopie dans son socle spatial explique ainsi la surdétermination de l'architecture, accueillant le refoulé originaire (désir de meurtre et défenses contre celui-ci), mais permettant aussi à ce refoulé de faire retour dans la prise en charge, via la composante spatiale du cadre institutionnel. Elle est fondée sur des enquêtes multisites (ville et village de Touraine, salons et congrès de tourisme) et sur l'étude de la littérature institutionnelle et promotionnelle locale, nationale, européenne et internationale. Je n'envisage pas le tourisme culturel comme un « secteur touristique » : ses pratiques sont marginales d'un point de vue financier et l'expression « tourisme culturel » ne permet pas de les appréhender dans leur complexité. Je considère le tourisme culturel comme une notion institutionnelle et je m'interroge sur son succès sémantique. La doctrine du tourisme culturel instituée par les institutions internationales se présente comme le bon flux, opposé au tourisme de masse. Pour les professionnels de la culture et du tourisme, les congrès et les salons de tourisme culturel constituent un lieu commun de production et de diffusion des normes de discours et d'exposition. Afin de faire venir le tourisme, les collectivités créent des réseaux, rebaptisent leur territoire, adaptent l'histoire, fabriquent des images identifiantes. Ma thèse est que les politiques de tourisme culturel participent d'un désir de reconnaissance par une altérité qui, pour être efficace, doit rester abstraite. L'altérité touristique est artificielle et normative comme le sont les identités représentées. Toutefois, certaines personnes parviennent à bricoler les images produites pour inventer leur communauté. La recherche évoque également les relations ambiguës entre tourisme et ethnographie. Je suggère de lever cette part d'ombre afin de permettre une anthropologie politique du tourisme, phénomène devenu un élément majeur de nos représentations du monde.
