Bringing together case studies from North America, South Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the book analyzes how contested national, ethnic and cultural sentiments clash in planning and experiencing urban spaces. Going beyond the claim that such situations exist in many parts of the world because communities construct their 'past memories' within their current daily life and future aspirations, the book explores how the very acts of planning and urban design are rooted in the existing structures of hegemonic power.

With contributors from the fields of architecture, geography, planning, anthropology and sociology, urban studies and cultural studies, the book provides a rich, interdisciplinary view into the conflicts over memory and belonging which are spatially expressed and mediated through the official planning apparatus.

Contents :

Introduction, Haim Yacobi and Tovi Fenster
Remembering forgotten landscapes: community gardens in New York City and the reconstruction of cultural diversity, Efrat Eizenberg
Memory, recognition and the architecture of a diasporic place: the case of Netivot, Israel, Haim Yacobi
Neighbourhood and belonging: Turkish immigrant women constructing the everyday public space, Eda Ünlü-Yücesoy
Memory, belonging, and resistance: the struggle over place among the Bedouin-Arabs of the Negev, Safa Abu-Rabia
One place – different memories: the case of Yaad and Miaar, Tovi Fenster
The reconstructed city as rhetorical space: the case of Volgograd, Elena Trubina
Seoul: city, identity, and the construction of the past, Guy Podoler
'We shouldn't sell our country!': the reconfiguration of Jewish urban property and ethno-national political discourses and projects in (post) Socialist Romania, Damiana Gabriela Otoiu
Forgetting and remembering: Frankfurt's Altstadt after the Second World War, Marianne Rodenstein
From 'patrimoine partagé' to 'whose heritage'?

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

The relationship between urbanism and fundamentalism is a very complex one. This book explores how the dynamics of different forms of religious fundamentalisms are produced, represented, and practiced in the city. It attempts to establish a relationship between two important phenomena: the historic transition of the majority of the world’s population from a rural to an urban existence; and the robust resurgence of religion as a major force in the shaping of contemporary life in many parts of the world.

Employing a transnational interrogation anchored in specific geographic regions, the contributors to this volume explore the intellectual and practical challenges posed by fundamentalist groups, movements, and organizations. They focus on how certain ultra religious practices of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism have contributed to the remaking of global urban space. Their work suggests that it is a grave oversimplification to view religious orthodoxies or doctrines as the main cause of urban terrorism or violence. Instead they argue that such phenomena should be understood as a particular manifestation of modernity’s struggles.

AlSayyad and Massoumi’s book provides fascinating reading for those interested in religion and the city, with thought provoking pieces from experts in anthropology, geography sociology, religious studies, and urban studies.

Contents :

Part 1: Fundamentalisms: Between City and Nation
The Fundamentalist City? - Nezar AlSayyad
Why in the City?

</text>

                <text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

21st Century Tokyo is a fascinating guide to the city through its contemporary architecture.

Authors Julian Worrall and Erez Golani Solomon present eighty-three buildings, from world-renowned projects such as Herzog & de Meuron's Prada building and FOA's spectacular Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, to quirky private houses and soaring office towers of glass and steel. Alongside Western architects, who have built some of their most outstanding projects in Tokyo, the authors showcase recent works of celebrated Japanese architects, including Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Fumihiko Maki, and Kenzo Tange. Incisive essays introduce each building not just from an architectural perspective, but also as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city, creating a full and fascinating portrait of the metropolis.

The book is divided into seven easy-to-navigate chapters, each covering a different Tokyo district, with detailed maps and access information, and illustrated throughout with stunning black-and-white photography by Joshua Lieberman. This is an indispensable guidebook for the professional architect, the sightseer, or anyone with an interest in contemporary Japan.

Tokyo—one of the most innovative and forward-thinking cities in the world, and nowhere is this more evident than in its modern architecture. Eighty-three of the city's latest buildings are gathered in these pages and introduced not just from an architectural perspective but as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city. With stunning black-and-white photography spotlighting a wide range of projects, from the monumental masterpieces of famous architects to the everyday buildings often overlooked, this is a full and fascinating overview of the architectural landscape of twenty-first-century Tokyo.

Julian Worrall is an Australian architect, scholar, and critic based in Tokyo. He has worked for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam, and Klein Dytham architecture in Tokyo. He is currently assistant professor at the Institute for Advanced Study of Waseda University in Tokyo, where he teaches architecture and conducts research on contemporary Asian urbanism.

Erez Golani Solomon holds a Ph.D. in architecture from the University of Tokyo. He teaches urban theory and architectural design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, and at Waseda University, Tokyo, where he is assistant professor.

Joshua Lieberman is a photographer who was born in New York and is now based in Tokyo.

</text>

The question, according to Matthew Kahn, is not how we’re going to avoid a hotter future but how we’re going to adapt to it. In Climatopolis, Kahn, one of the world’s foremost experts on the economics of the environment, argues that cities and regions will adapt to rising temperatures over time, slowly transforming our everyday lives as we change our behaviors and our surroundings. Taking the reader on a tour of the world’s cities— from New York to Beijing to Mumbai—Kahn’s clear-eyed, engaging, and optimistic message presents a positive yet realistic picture of what our urban future will look like.

Matthew E. The New York skyline is arguably one of the most distinctive on Earth. At night, however, the city’s numerous landmarks are transformed from the familiar into the new. Following the success of Merrell’s London at Night, award-winning aerial photographer Jason Hawkes offers a dramatic, night-time perspective on one of the world’s most iconic locations. From the vantage point of a helicopter, Hawkes captures the magical, almost abstract quality of such familiar sights as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building as seen after dark, as well as revealing some of New York’s less well-known vistas. Featuring an informative introduction and extended captions by the New York Times journalist Christopher Gray, New York at Night is a unique and often breathtaking record of the city that truly never sleeps.

Jason Hawkes has produced over 35 aerial photographic books since 1991.

Christopher Gray is a journalist for the New York Times who writes about the architectural history of New York.

This book is a striking collection of the personal, often playful and thought-provoking installations in urban environments that use and react to walls, traffic signs, trees, ads, and any and all elements of the modern city. It is the first book to document these very current art projects – as well as their interplay with fine art, architecture, performance, installation, activism and urbanism – in a comprehensive way. This perceptive work brings art to the masses and helps us to rediscover our every day surroundings. It challenges us to question if the cities we have are the cities we need while adding a touch of magic to mundane places and situations.

</text>

                <text>

</text>
