Themes unquiet and persistent. I offer a critique of approaches to policy and argue that post-structural theoretical shifts offer new practical perspectives and the potential for imaginative understandings, which remain largely unexplored. I focus on the built space and the emotions in an attempt to alter the perspective from which questions are asked, and to problematise the questioning process itself. Questions of method are integral to this thesis. The story told is that of the barrio of La Cienaga. It is at once a particular story; that of one of the oldest barrios of Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, and of the individuals who live there. It is also a typical story of a deprived inner city area that can be found the world over. Residents of La Cienaga discuss the public spaces of the barrio, the private spaces of their homes and their links and visions of the wider city which surrounds them. Stones tell of what it feels like to live in such a place, how the built environment affects social relations, the possibility of community, aspirations and a sense of self. In the second half of the thesis I look at the story telling process: the purpose of stories: their ability to reveal and heal. I return to my practical concerns and examine the implications of both my method and the findings uncovered in the first half of the thesis, for the concrete recurring problem of the barrio: waste and absent infrastructure. The result is a solution that neither I, nor the barrio residents, could have imagined at the outset. Ces dynamiques spatiales sont rassemblées sous le terme de banalisation. Celui-ci comprend la mise à distance des lieux et leur indifférenciation par leur transformation fonctionnelle, l'invisibilisation par la profusion architecturale et la marchandisation de l'environnement urbain, ou encore la conversion de bâtiments " staliniens " à des usages touristiques. La banalisation des bâtiments se conclut parfois par leur arasement, surtout s'ils n'avaient aucune portée politique (cinémas, supermarché). A Varsovie, de telles destructions, souvent remplacées par des investissements plus rentables, ont néanmoins suscité un mouvement de défense des architectes, si bien que la question de la patrimonialisation de l'architecture socialiste a envahi l'espace public dans les années 2000, et a débouché sur une loi en ce sens. Le texte s'interroge, pour conclure, sur l'interprétation à la fois des dynamiques de banalisation et sur les réactions patrimoniales qu'elles ont entraînées, et plus largement sur la contribution de ces héritages urbains à la construction d'une mémoire collective en Pologne. La population et les revenus sont de plus en plus concentrés dans les plus grandes agglomérations. Les conséquences sont évidentes sur le fonctionnement économique des villes ; elles affectent également les structures et les dynamiques de l'habitat. L'article montre tout d'abord comment à l'échelle nationale la situation du logement s'est transformée : le marasme de la construction, hérité d'une pénurie structurelle a duré jusque dans les années 2000. La reprise de la construction de logements se fait dans de nouveaux cadres, mais n'a pas résorbé le manque de logements. A l'échelle locale, les capitales d'Etat constituent des marchés locaux très spécifiques car très engagé dans la métropolisation. Elles polarisent une part importante de l'effort de construction, et offrent des logements plus chers mais souvent plus petits que dans la moyenne de l'Etat. Les configurations spatiales intra-urbaines montrent que la métropolisation en Europe centrale et orientale produit des mécanismes originaux de différenciation socio-spatiale. Comment deviennent-elles métropoles après avoir été " seulement " capitales d'Etats ?
