<text>

Histoire Urbaine paraît trois fois par an.

<text>This doctoral thesis analyses the role of historical urban agriculture in a long-time perspective, through a combination of overarching surveys of Swedish towns and detailed studies of one town – Uppsala in east-central Sweden. The study shows how agricultural land – town land – of various sizes was donated to towns repeatedly during medieval times and in the 16th and 17th centuries. The study examines urban food production at three points in time, and concludes that grain production and, later, potato production as well was substantial in many towns, indicating high levels of urban self-sufficiency. This allows new perspectives concerning the interpretation of urban food provision, as urban dependency on countryside food production might have varied considerably between towns. In addition, the study shows how urban agriculture was connected to social welfare systems, in particular aiming at supporting urban widows. The results in this thesis provide an historical context to the increasing discussions about present-day urban agriculture globally, and identify a number of factors that may create or counteract opportunities for urban agriculture.</text>

<text>History and geography of ball in France. A changing process according to those of the socio-political structures

From 1880 to 1900, French public authorities have try to strengthen the new republican regime. The reinforcement of local council was one of their means. This brought the country people's adhesion to the new regime.
These targets had been mainly pursued by taking the significant spatial and community symbolic which was until then in the Church hands. By instituing the 14th of july (14-juillet) national feast, a republican model of community and communal space sacralisation is established with some specific festive rituals. Among them, the most important is the ball, called the public ball but which I call the republican ball.
Socio-spatial imaginary has been durably structured by this model throughout all the XXth century. Today, its fast decline is due to the diffusion of new local spatial practices by the generalisation of urban ways of life. But the model is still influent: it explains why the heritage of some XIXth century political quarrels is still living on; it's also the reason of the recurrent failing of local councils reunification laws.
This paper wants to define spatial specificities of these festive ritual symbolics to show their political importance: this study of one and a half century appears to be really rich; we will speak about the following points:
- the ball's permanent and important evolution although it's traditional image seems fixed.
- although regurlarly renewed, it maintains heritages and the active remembering of old quarrels.
- balls are permanently at political stake; that's why local and national politician are forever concerned; they also built a strong legal frame because it always has given them legitimacy, especially during changing times.
- althrough each period, it has helped to construct local communities; so, it gives a fine view of different kinds of rural and urban spaces (deep rural, perirural, periurban and central urban) by the mean of mentalities.
- when studying the balls' audience, it shows the evolution of 4 different level of local space mental structures.
- the important contrasts in their pratice makes us wander about the survival of regional cultural behaviours in a strongly standardized France.

key words: dancing, country and city, suburban, local places, local authorities, social bind, representation, perceptive space, symbolic place, territory and community, cultural identity, regionalism</text>

                <text>
A lecture by Gyan Prakash, author of Mumbai Fables (Princeton University Press, 2010).

Princeton University Press:

A place of spectacle and ruin, Mumbai exemplifies the cosmopolitan metropolis. It is not just a big city but also a soaring vision of modern urban life. Millions from India and beyond, of different ethnicities, languages, and religions, have washed up on its shores, bringing with them their desires and ambitions. Mumbai Fables explores the mythic inner life of this legendary city as seen by its inhabitants, journalists, planners, writers, artists, filmmakers, and political activists. In this remarkable cultural history of one of the world's most important urban centers, Gyan Prakash unearths the stories behind its fabulous history, viewing Mumbai through its turning points and kaleidoscopic ideas, comic book heroes, and famous scandals--the history behind Mumbai's stories of opportunity and oppression, of fabulous wealth and grinding poverty, of cosmopolitan desires and nativist energies.

Starting from the catastrophic floods and terrorist attacks of recent years, Prakash reaches back to the sixteenth-century Portuguese conquest to reveal the stories behind Mumbai's historic journey. Examining Mumbai's role as a symbol of opportunity and reinvention, he looks at its nineteenth-century development under British rule and its twentieth-century emergence as a fabled city on the sea. Different layers of urban experience come to light as he recounts the narratives of the Nanavati murder trial and the rise and fall of the tabloid Blitz, and Mumbai's transformation from the red city of trade unions and communists into the saffron city of Hindu nationalist Shiv Sena. Starry-eyed planners and elite visionaries, cynical leaders and violent politicians of the street, land sharks and underworld dons jostle with ordinary citizens and poor immigrants as the city copes with the dashed dreams of postcolonial urban life and lurches into the seductions of globalization.

Shedding light on the city's past and present, Mumbai Fables offers an unparalleled look at this extraordinary metropolis.
