<text>The city of Dalian, on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in China's Northeast ('Manchuria'), underwent rapid development during the first half of the twentieth century. Between 1905 and 1945, Dalian and its environs were administered by Japan as part of the Guandong Leased Territories. This study examines Dalian's history during the initial period of Japanese rule, and places it within the broader context of Chinese urbanization. Although Dalian was governed by the Japanese administrators of both the leasehold and the South Manchuria Railway Company (Mantetsu), this study emphasizes that the city was only 'leased' to Japan and that Dalian's Chinese inhabitants played as equally an important role in its history as did the foreign rulers.

One of the major themes of this history of Dalian is the periodization of Japanese imperialism in China, and specifically 'Manchuria.' The traditional view of both Chinese and Western historians, (that the September 18 Incident of 1931 marked the start of Japan's aggression in the Northeast), is challenged since the Guandong leasehold had been under Tokyo's direct control since 1905. Subtle shifts in the severity of Japanese rule occurred during the subsequent four decades, but the origins of Japan's expansion in China clearly began around the turn of the and not in the 1930s. The key to understanding Dalian's history is the concept of 'contractually limited formal imperialism,' or leasehold colonialism. Within a chronological framework that traces the shifts in degrees of formal Japanese control, this work examines the issues of Chinese labour, the rise of Chinese nationalism, and the development of the region's economy.

This dissertation traces Dalian's growth and evolution between 1905 and the 1931 Manchurian Incident utilizing a variety of contemporary sources including documents of the Guandong and Mantetsu administrations, Chinese and Japanese newspapers, American consular reports, and British Foreign Office documents. These primary materials are incorporated within a comprehensive review of recent scholarship by Chinese historians working in the People's Republic. The result is an account of Dalian's history in which the Chinese factor is returned to a story which until now has largely emphasized the Japanese 'side of the coin.' </text>

Britons are increasingly aware of living in a society plagued by fear and unhappiness. Could our towns and cities be the cause? Anna Minton offers an in-depth and passionate exploration of the state of Britain today, revealing how private companies have taken control from local government and the electorate, creating spaces designed for profit and watched over by CCTV. Now, untested urban planning has transformed not only our cities, but the very nature of public space, of citizenship, and of trust.

<text>We study the impact of violent conflict on social capital, as measured by citizen participation in community groups, defined by four activity types: governance, social service, infrastructure development and risk-sharing. Combining household panel data from Indonesia with conflict event information, we find an overall decrease in citizen contributions in districts affected by group violence in the early post-Suharto transition period. However, participation in communities with a high degree of ethnic polarization is less affected, and is even stimulated for local governance and risk-sharing activities. Moreover, individual engagement appears to depend on the involvement of other members from the same ethnic group, which points toward building of intra-ethnic social networks in the presence of violence. Finally, our results show the danger of generalization when dealing with citizen participation in community activities. We find a large variety of responses depending on the activity and its economic and social functions. We also find large observed and unobserved individual heterogeneities of the effect of violence on participation. Once an appropriate nomenclature of activities is used and controls for heterogeneity are applied, we find that the ethnic and social configuration of society is central in understanding citizen participation.</text>

<text>This dissertation resituates C. A. Doxiadis in Post-War urban design history with a detailed examination of how urban growth and change was addressed by urban design strategies as applied in the master plan for Riyadh Saudi Arabia, undertaken between 1968 and 1972. The Riyadh master plan commission is important within Doxiadis' career, occurring in the midst of his prolific writing projects and approximately eight years after he completed the Islamabad master plan, his most renowned project. Most Post-War architects focused on the socio-spatial components of urban life, elaborating architectural projects that intertwined transportation, infrastructure, and concentrated on mass housing strategies. This dissertation argues that Doxiadis' contribution to urban design theory and practice during the Post-War period was to define a rational scientific methodology for urban design that would restructure settlements to enable urban expansion and change while addressing issues of community building, governance and processes of development. The applied urban design for Riyadh Saudi Arabia strongly exemplifies Doxiadis' rational strategy and methodology as outlined in Ekistics theory and the conceptual model of Dynapolis. The comparative analysis examines how Doxiadis applies the Dynapolis model in the urban spatial planning of Riyadh to organize urban territory at the macro and local urban scales, define neighborhood communities, and connect the new master plan to the existing spatial territory of the city. The longitudinal analysis contrasts the Doxiadis master plan, Riyadh's first urban development strategy, to the most recent comprehensive approach MEDSTAR to understand how the Doxaidis' urban design has sustained its spatial continuity over time. This dissertation makes two significant contributions. The first is to broaden knowledge of Post-War urban design specific to the spatial problem of urban expansion and change, and second to resituate Doxiadis within the Post-War history of urban design specifically revealing his previously unrecognized project of the Riyadh master plan undertaken from 1968-1972.</text>

<text>This research presents the case of growth in Buenos Aires since the late 1970s, when the decentralization of urban planning powers in the Province of Buenos Aires began, until 2001, when an economic crisis submerged -even if transitorily- more than half of all metropolitan households below the poverty line. This thesis explores why social inequality within municipal boundaries increased after the municipalities acquired autonomous planning powers. It counts with three sections: Section I investigates how the decentralized planning practices of the municipalities of Greater Buenos Aires have impacted the growth of Buenos Aires. It explains the cluster of affluent gated communities in the poorest municipalities of the urban periphery as the outcome of the special permits that these municipalities gave to real estate developers. Section II explains how national development policies have contributed to the impoverishment of these municipalities. It depicts how these policies have generated a persistent flow of poor residents to Greater Buenos Aires at the same time that they have diminished the economic sufficiency of local governments. Section III explains why these municipalities did not resist these transformations.

This research has found that national industrialization policies determined much of the fate of Greater Buenos Aires. Because of the limitations that the preexisting geography of development imposes on local participants, decentralization cannot prevent social polarization when only the highest income sectors have the resources that can activate local economies. Nevertheless within these circumstances, municipal planning practices and local polities have determined the specific geography of social inequality. Thus, participatory institutions are necessary, but not sufficient to transcend social inequality. Social inequality in the metropolis will diminish only after a development project on the national scale is developed. </text>

<text>It has frequently been suggested in the literature that a polycentric distribution of employment and people shortens commuting distances because people locate within or close to their employment subcenter (co-location hypothesis). Having studied the three biggest French metropolitan areas over the last decade we have established that co-location affects only a minority of inhabitants, of whom there are fewer in 1999 than there were nine years earlier. Indeed, the majority of people living in a subcenter work outside their subcenter of residence. This situation was even more marked in 1999 than it was in 1990. In addition to this, the majority of jobs located in subcenters are held by non-residents who are generally living further and further from their place of work.</text>

                <text>
