<text>The spatial distribution of elderly persons in S.W. England will be discussed, with special reference to the South Hams District of Devon. Housing problems presented by the very high concentration of the elderly in this area, in particular those aged 75 + will be assessed in relation to local and county planning policies. The relationship between the elderly and the local housing market provides the major focus for this paper. The changing geography of the elderly in relation to housing provision may be interpreted in two main ways: either the housing market may be viewed as one that is responding to increasing demands from the growing population; or the provision of speculative housing supply may itself be a determinant of these new spatial patterns at the local scale.</text>

<text>According to the 1986 Census, the population in Cairo has reached 10 million inhabitants. With a built-up area of about 32000 hectares, it's one of the most densely populated city in the world. The increase remains at a high level (2, a year), but is now almost natural. This new fact is due mainly to the stagnation of urban growth at national level. As a result of huge public investments in the field of urban utilities, living conditions have improved, while informal dynamics, together with a rather ancient process of overdensification, may have caused a reduction of the housing shortage. However urban expansion has been pursued at the expense of arable land, with an annual loss of 340 hectares within the agglomeration boundaries.
Another major trend of the last years is the increase of vacant housing units (17% of total stock) on the one hand and of shanty dwellings on the other. This phenomenon shows the inadequate relation between supply and demand in such a field, as well as the growing pressure of the speculation process. Now, in a context of economic recession, this qualitative crisis may have dramatic consequences, both at national level (greater exclusion of lower income population and increase of unsound settlements).</text>

Traditional solidarity networks (pertaining to family, or village community) are very important amongst Portuguese migrants in France. A more specific feature of this group is the exceptionally dense network of institutionalized associations (an inventory led in 1982 to the official figure of 769 associations). The increasing percentages of foreigners among the French population (foreigners' rates) is due to a faster increase of the foreign population than that of the French population, as analysed from census to census for the last twenty years. These facts do not account for local differences: the paper examines, for each of the 57 agglomerations of more than 100000 inhabitants in 1982, the evolutions not only of foreigners rates but also of the variations of French and foreign populations. Types of evolution are described focusing on the part played by foreign migrations in urban growth. </text>

The process of urbanization - suburbanization has been followed in the Brussels area during the seventies by a very intensive counter-urbanization. The migration flow is positive in the rural districts for the 25-40 years old households with their children under 10 years. Around 20 years, on the contrary, migration to town is more important, as it is for unmarried people. Since 1979 a slackening of the urban to rural shift is observed, and seems to be linked with the economic crisis.</text>

During Francoism, essentially from 1955 to 1965, public authorities tried to solve the Madrid urban growth problem by building social housing. They are very different in nature and localization. One can study their influence on the present-day social structure of the city, well known with recent factorial studies. They have a secundary role in the centre, but important in the peripheral districts, especially in the transformation of the traditional suburbs and in the formation of the great working-class crescent in the southeast. In other zones, this role is difficult to interpret, at least at the scale of the neighbourhood.</text>

Authors show by means of two surveys they processed, the complexity of the relationship between gender différenciation and space use. They analyse this relationship with the mediation of role distribution in the household. Factors such as matrimonial status of household (couple or mother alone), employment status of woman (working or not working), children and urban space, seem to be far more discriminating than only gender difference between men and women. Responsibility of household activities (children and shopping) is always for women, but the strongest difference in activity participation and space use is at first between both working men and women on the one hand and non-working women on the other hand, and secondly between working men and working women.</text>

Ethnic and family factors constitute a geographical fact of prime importance, and the only social reality deeply experimenced in the context of a fast-growing urbanization. As a matter of fact, the cultural and economic community, where the new city-dweller belongs, is not limited to the city itself. It encompasses the city and villages in the same network of multilateral relations and solidarities. Some ethnic groups know how to use well-working, association-based potentialities. The existence of such an ethnico-migratory system constitutes the undeniable specificity of the African city.</text>
