This paper examines the role of out- migration at or about retirement age in changing the age-structure and ethnic composition of a London Borough, Brent, approximately 10 km to the north- west of the centre. Like other London Boroughs, Brent has been experiencing population losses. It will be shown that out-migration is particularly pronounced among those aged 20-29 and 50-64 years. The paper is based on research into the attractiveness of Brent for retirement. It has been found that, in areas of rapid population change, the turnover of people is itself a stimulus to other moves. São Paulo is one of the States of Brazil that has presented one of the highest population growth rates, not only in what concerns natural growth rates but due to its development it has attracted national migrants after having received many foreigners. In 1920 one fifth of the total population of the State of São Paulo was compensed by foreigners, fifty per cent of which beeing Italians. Nowadays the participation of foreign population is only about 2,57% and the percentage of national migrants has raised to 30%, of which are important those proceeding from the States of Minas Gerais, Bahia, Parana and Pernambuco, who sum up to 72.3% of the total of national migrants in the State of São Paulo according to the 1980 Census. In its beginning, international and national migration went mainly to the countryside. With the spreading of the capitalist mode of production in Brazil the focus of accumulation is mainly situated in the Southeast in which the State of São Paulo assumes the commanding role in the production of brazilian space. Two features comprise the geographical analysis of the family: size and structure. The disparities of these two indicators must be correlated with age and socio-economic status in order to fully understand the spatial structure of society at the local level. The «Pays de la Loire» region is characterized by a relatively high proportion of large families. These are located in essentially rural areas. Smaller families are to be found in cities and their peri-urban regions. This pattern conforms with the national trend. The study of some marginal family types (non-family households...) reveals surprising location patterns, in Vendée choletaise for instance. Deux axes de recherche organisent l'analyse géographique de la famille : il s'agit de l'étude de la structure et de la taille des familles. Les distributions de ces deux indicateurs, pour autant qu'elles soient croisées avec les effets de structure par âge et de catégorie socio-professionnelle, constituent un élément important pour la compréhension des comportements spatiaux des sociétés locales. Les auteurs s'attachent à présenter les disparités géographiques des types et tailles de familles dans les Pays de la Loire. En 1982, le maintien d'un nombre significatif de familles nombreuses localisées de façon privilégiée en milieu rural, constitue l'une des originalités régionales. Toutefois les espaces urbains et péri-urbains sont caractérisés par le type dominant de la famille à descendance restreinte, ce qui semble conforme à l'évolution nationale. The territorial expansion of the Quebec «Cercles de fermières» (1915-1949). A simplified vision of the association of the cercles de fermières will show its history forged by the Quebec State. Carrying traditionalist and conservative values, the association would be following a clerical and nationalist path to keep the families on their lands. Studying the geographical expansion of this association sheds another light and another understanding of its history. Its numerous cercles develop along specific regional patterns all over the Québec territory, unequally on the new colonised Northern Territories and in the oldest Central Quebec. Not only do we discover a dynamic specific to this voluntary association, but we can also get to some conclusion on the rurality of some regions and therefore question the concept of rurality and its link to agriculture.
