Geographical aspects. Social welfare expenditure for elderly people occupies third place after expenditures for children and for handicapped people. The Ministry of Social Affairs and of National Welfare estimates that they from 15 per cent of their budget and that the costs have increased threefold since the mid-1970s. In the light of recent trends in French fertility, the ageing of the population can only increase for a time. The social costs of the demographic trend must be established and the geographical implications investigated. The latter requires the comparative examination of contrasting regions so that the overall level of social welfare expenditure per capita elderly person is established. The explanatory factors of general relevance will be underlined. Jusqu'ici, les recherches aux États-Unis se sont concentrées sur les différents courants migratoires qui entraînent la rurbanisation et ont comparé leur importance respective. Peu d'études ont examiné les migrants dont le comportement engendre ces courants, d'où notre intérêt pour ce thème. Nous étudions les caractéristiques des personnes qui se déplacent d'une zone métropolitaine vers une zone non-métropolitaine, et ce que ces caractéristiques révèlent sur le comportement des migrants. Notre étude se base sur un échantillon national d'environ 2.300 actes de migration qui proviennent d'une étude sur « familles témoins » s'échelonnant sur quatorze ans. Nous classons ces déplacements par types de courants (par exemple, entre deux régions métropolitaines ; d'une région métropolitaine vers une région non-métropolitaine, etc.) et comparons les caractéristiques économiques et démographiques des migrants. Notre enquête se concentre sur 1. les types de personnes qui migrent et ce qui les différencie, 2. les conséquences de leurs déplacements quant à l'importance de certaines fonctions établies par la migration (par exemple, reliant les ouvriers à leur lieu de travail), et 3. le rôle de la distance quant à la structure de leur déplacement. Pour chaque thème, nous cherchons à comprendre la dynamique migratoire relative à la rurbanisation et ce que les buts de cette migration peuvent apporter aux gens. Notre analyse met en évidence divers points. Premièrement, le courant migratoire des zones métropolitaines vers les zones non-métropolitaines (comme d'autres courants) démontre une faible « efficacité d'ensemble », c'est-à-dire que la quantité des déplacements est haute comparativement à la redistribution nette de la population vers les zones non-métropolitaines. Ceci suppose qu'aucun stéréotype dominant ne peut correspondre aux divers comportements des migrants considérés. Deuxièmement, la redistribution migratoire a orienté certaines tranches de la population (jeunes adultes, chômeurs par exemple) vers, plutôt qu'à partir des zones métropolitaines. Troisièmement, le déplacement des migrants atteignant ou faisant déjà partie de la retraite démontre une plus grande « efficacité d'ensemble » sous certains rapports. La précision inhabituelle de nos données réside dans le fait que nous pouvons comparer les distances parcourues en nous basant sur les caractéristiques des migrants. Nous élaborons un modèle de migration qui, lorsque les différences existant dans la répartition de la population entourant le migrant ont été réglées, dépend seulement du degré d'indifférence qu'il manifeste à l'égard des longs déplacements. This paper traces their growth and their spatial distribution, based on a detailed survey of about one in four homes in the county. The nature of the homes as small businesses in then focused upon, which are mainly private family businesses although heavily supported by public funds. However, changing national legislation and local development and interpretation of regulation create considerable uncertainty as to the future of this sector of care for the elderly. From 1960 to 1982, these accidents were responsible for an average of 55,000 deaths per year. An analysis of trends in road accident fatality rates during the period 1960-1982 reveals two main phases: an almost continuous increase in rates during the decade 1960-1970, and a general decreasing trend during the seventies punctuated however by several variations related mainly to socioeconomic factors but also to the implementation of specific road safety measures. Road traffic fatalities have a nonnegligible impact on the whole of society, mainly because of the age distribution of victims: young people of 15-24 years old are greatly over-represented in road deaths. It fatalities also have an indirect effect on the birth rate as a high proportion of deaths involve men and women at the age of procreation; for Canada, it can be estimated using data from the mid-seventies, that 1200 births are lost annually through road traffic deaths. Finally, we present certain estimates of the economic cost to society of fatal road accidents in Canada and the U.S. in 1980. In the light of these observations, we underline the importance of implementing both active and passive road safety programs which can reduce the road accident burden to society. De 1960 à 1982, ces accidents sont responsables d'une moyenne d'environ 55.000 décès par année. L'analyse de l'évolution des taux de mortalité par accident de la route durant la période de 1960-1982 permet de distinguer deux grandes phases : une augmentation presque continue des taux durant la décennie 1960-1970 et une tendance générale à la baisse durant les années soixante-dix marquée cependant par plusieurs variations liées surtout aux facteurs socio-économiques mais aussi en partie à la mise en place de mesures spécifiques de sécurité routière. La mortalité par accident de la route a un impact non négligeable sur l'ensemble de la société, à cause de sa structure par âge particulière : les jeunes de 15-24 ans sont largement surreprésentés parmi les décédés de la route. Elle a aussi un effet indirect sur la natalité puisqu'une forte proportion des décès concernent des hommes et des femmes qui sont en âge de procréer. Using some indicators of ageing expressed in a very simple form (associations between several broad age groups in local populations) the paper will describe and analyse the clear reversal of a tendency noticed in the evolution of the structure of ages in cities and countries. From 1975 to 1982, as a by-product of a powerful movement of exurbanisation dominated by relatively young couples and their children, the country population of the Rhones-Alpes region marked a clear tendency to rejuvenation; conversely the decline of migration shifts of populatioh to cities (country exodus, increased interurban migrations and international migrations), the general fall of their fecundity and the extension of the mean duration of life has produced a noticeable ageing of the urban population. The variety of local and regional situations is studied through the recent evolution of ageing in the 85 Rhonè-Alpines urban built-up areas of over 5,000 inhabitants, among which we observe very important contrasts. The disparate trends can be partly explained by the divergent evolution of economic activities (here in crisis, there in full expansion), in the general slackening of growth in large built-up areas and in certain patterns of migration affecting the pensioners. Utilisant quelques indicateurs de vieillesse exprimés sous une forme très simple (rapports entre les divers grands groupes d'âges constitutifs d'une population), l'auteur souligne le net renversement de tendance observé dans l'évolution de la structure des âges des villes et des campagnes : de 1975 à 1982, sous l'influence d'un puissant mouvement d'exurbanisation mettant en jeu des couples relativement jeunes et leurs enfants, la population rurale de la région Rhône- Alpes a marqué une nette tendance au rajeunissement; inversement l'affaiblissement des courants migratoires en direction des villes (exode rural, migrations interurbaines et migrations internationales), s 'ajoutant à la baisse générale de la fécondité et à l'allongement de la durée moyenne de vie, a provoqué un vieillissement sensible de la population urbaine. La diversité des situations locales et régionales est étudiée à travers l'évolution récente du vieillissement dans l'ensemble des 85 unités urbaines rhône-alpines de plus de 5000 habitants, parmi lesquelles on observe des contrastes très importants. La disparité des destins urbains trouve son explication dans l'évolution divergente des activités économiques (ici en crise, là en plein essor), dans le mouvement général de desserrement des grandes agglomérations et dans certains phénomènes de tropisme affectant les retraités. Demographic indicators and urbanization in Abidjan. This paper deals with demographic behaviours with regard to fertility, family and marriage in an urban environment. The analysis mainly bears on the city of Abidjan where four types of dwelling, ranging from residential areas to shanty towns, are reviewed. The relations between the types of dwelling and the demographic behaviours of the inhabitants are studied. While some behaviours appear to be independent of the dwelling type as is the case with the large family network, others like fertility, for instance, show a good correlation between the demographic parameter and the type of dwelling. But, on account of internal migrations, ageing appears very diversfied in Walloonia. In some regions persists a phenomenon of superageing, caused by the secular young working depopulation as well as the recent rush of young pensioners.
