The object of this study is to show the statistical relationships between two forms of migratory movements of different nature : departing population and commuting. The study is based on two specific statistical uses of the population census data. The first considered the 108 main towns in France. The aim of the study is to show the role of migratory movements in changes in employment during the period 1968-75. The second considers the town of Strasbourg. The aim here is to show one aspect of the urbanization during the period 1975-82.</text>

Migration flows for the total population have been the subject of a great number of studies. Migration flows relating to foreigners within national borders, on the other hand, have not been widely examined. And yet we can legitimately ask what the role of such migration flows is on the distribution of foreigners within the country. After a brief analysis of the mobility rates between census years for the main nationality groupings, we present an analytical method which shows that, as far as the regions in the south of France are concerned, migration flows have had a minimal effect on the fall in numbers of foreigners and immigrants registered over the last few years.</text>

<text>Population Densities : Introduction to a Geography of eastern Africa ?

The high demographic growth rate which strikes East Africa does not alter the major patterns of the population distribution nor the density geography in the region. However, peasantry challenge this growth with four types of adjustments : spatial adjustments (swamp and forest clearance within the territory, settlements outside the territory, political and land repartition adjustments and violent adjustments which either force people to fly away or kill them. The frequency of crisis situations lays stress on societies which are blocked in their territories or in their technical systems or in their inégal political and land sharings. This paper gives a grid to read the different regional situations as far as interactions between density and develops ment are concerned.</text>

<text>Effects of the Population Ageing on Tourism Patterns in France.

Ageing of the population, change in lifestyles of the elderly citizens, the tourism operators will be strongly affected by these long term socio-demographic evolutions. Retired persons already represent a large part of the clientele in the tourism sector. This group shows profound social change : growing life expectancy, improvement in health and standard of living, cohorts with an increasing participation in the consumption and leisure world, but also cohorts that will experience uncertainty as far as financing of retirement pensions is concerned and that could face problems of mobility over 75 or 80. What are the recent trends in matter of senior tourism, and how could it change during the next years? We present statistical data in order to highlight these topics. On much major points, tourism patterns of the elderly are getting closer to those of the younger adults, because of generation effects. The arrival at the retirement age of the « baby-boomers » cohorts will certainly imply new changes in tourism demand of the elderly, especially a growing autonomy in tourism and travel, and a larger and larger diversity in the nature of holidays stays.</text>

In the department of Kouka, the population density increased from 12 to 43,5 inhabitants/km2 between 1952 and 1993. This strong demographic increase is mostly due to a strong migratory flow. A very flexible land system allowing the settlement of foreigners contributed to the migratory dynamics. Nowadays, the land pressure increases and shortage of available land leads to modifications in land rules. The opportunities for tensions or conflicts linked to land access rules grow in number while the numerical and economical suprematy of migrants - representing 73 % of the population - is consolidated.</text>

<text>The peopling of Quebec's rural regions facing the phenomenous of denatality and desurbanization.

Quebec is among nations, one with the lowest birthrate. Quebec rural families which energically lived by the «revanche des berceaux», today register birthrates no higher than those of urban population. Nevertheless, a new reversal is favorable to the rural settlement. That is the counterurbanization phenomena. It mainly results of ex-city dwellers which have chosen the rural environment as their new life style. Only a minority has opted to work the land. Possible alternative to urban population, rural areas are far less agricultural, but without taking into account our neo-farmers, it is understandable that the agricultural function would be even smaller.</text>
