L'automatisation actuelle du métro parisien soulève un paradoxe moral étrange : dès lors que l'on supprime les conducteurs, les ingénieurs conçoivent un métro « protégé » des voyageurs mais ils laissent les métros avec conducteurs sans protection. Cette dissymétrie de traitement est d'autant plus étrange qu'elle semble trouver, du côté des conducteurs, un acquiescement tacite. La compréhension de cette situation étrange suppose d'analyser sur une relative longue période la manière dont les ingénieurs et les conducteurs composent leur communauté d'action au travers des processus d'automatisation, du travail et des conflits. Au coeur de cette dynamique, la peur de l'accident et du suicide voyageur apparaît comme un élément déterminant, même s'il reste la plupart du temps « inexprimé » sauf sous forme d'objet technique, dans l'élaboration d'une stratégie défensive du métier de la conduite.

A billion people, almost half of all city dwellers in the developing world, live in squatter settlements. The most famous of these settlements are the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, which have existed for over a century and continue to outpace the rest of the city in growth.<br />

Janice Perlman's award-winning The Myth of Marginality was the first in-depth account of life in the favelas, and it is considered one of the most important books in global urban studies in the last 40 years. Now, in Favela , Perlman carries that story forward to the present. Re-interviewing many longtime favela residents whom she had first met in 1969--as well as their children and grandchildren--Perlman offers the only long-term perspective available on the favela families as they struggle for a better life. Perlman discovers that much has changed in four decades, but while educational levels have risen, democracy has replaced dictatorship, and material conditions have improved, many residents feel more marginalized than ever. Le texte vise à analyser l'influence des inégalités sociales et économiques sur les comportements de contraception et les niveaux de fécondité dans les villes de Côte d'Ivoire. Pour cela, il considère successivement : i) l'impact des caractéristiques individuelles de la femme, ii) l'effet de la structure propre de son ménage d'appartenance de sa position familiale dans son ménage, et iii) l'influence des variables contextuelles relatives à son quartier d'appartenance sur la fécondité et les comportements de contraception. Les données utilisées proviennent de l'enquête démographique et de santé (EDS) de 1994 et du recensement général de la population et de l'habitat de 1998. Deux types d'analyses sont utilisées dans le cadre de l'étude : des analyses descriptives de type transversal pour apprécier la relation entre le niveau de la fécondité et les différentes variables ; des analyses explicatives, à l'aide de modèles multiniveaux, pour mesurer l'effet propre de chacune des variables dans l'ensemble des facteurs intervenant sur la fécondité, qu'ils soient d'ordre individuel ou contextuel. L'analyse montre que la baisse de la fécondité est induite en ville par des changements économiques et sociaux dont l'origine est antérieure à la période de crise et qui marquent l'amélioration des conditions de vie des populations. Cette baisse s'est accélérée avec la crise tout en accusant des différences relativement importantes entre les villes et entre les quartiers à l'intérieur des villes. Cette différenciation entre les contextes socio-économiques urbains renvoie à des écarts en matière de scolarisation, loin d'être uniforme dans la sphère urbaine ivoirienne, mais aussi à des différences quant à l'effectivité des programmes de développement que ceux-ci concernent la planification familiale, la santé des population mais aussi l'amélioration générale des conditions de vie. Ainsi la fécondité urbaine varie d'une ville à l'autre, d'un quartier à l'autre, d'un contexte urbain à l'autre, en fonction du développement social et économique, de la disponibilité des services de planification familiale et des mœurs sociales et culturelles. Si la ville constitue globalement un contexte favorable à la transition de la fécondité, celle-ci est loin d'être accusée dans toutes les cités de Côte d'Ivoire et elle concerne surtout certains groupes socio-économiques.

L’aire urbaine de Chieti-Pescara représente bien ce modèle. La migration féminine dans cette région est caractérisée par un nombre important de femmes d’Europe de l’est, plutôt bien éduquées, ayant migré seules, motivées par des considérations économiques et qui recherchent une certaine indépendance. Elles jouent un rôle important dans la sphère domestique dans une société mature où les femmes ont un travail en dehors de la maison. Leurs salaires ne sont pas très élevés mais sont essentiels puisqu’ils contribuent fortement à la survie de la famille restée au pays avec laquelle elles gardent des liens forts.
The presence of foreign women in Italy is particularly relevant in communities originating from Eastern European countries. This presence is destined to increase in the near future. Eastern European women are particularly numerous in the Adriatic regions, mainly because of spatial proximity. This kind of mobility is also reinforced by the EU development programmes favouring cooperation among all the Adriatic regions. The phenomenon is relevant enough to justify the existence of an Adriatic model. Chieti-Pescara metropolitan area represents well this model. Female migration in this area is characterised by a large presence of Eastern European women, fairly well-educated, who move alone, motivated by economic factors, searching for autonomy and independence. They play an important role in the domestic care, in a mature society where women have a job outside home. Their salary is not very high but it is used also to contribute to the survival of the family members left behind with whom they keep a strong link.

Quels sont les rapports qu'entretiennent les femmes marocaines avec leur ville ? Quelle est la place réelle qu'elles occupent dans les espaces public et privé ? Comment la ville de Rabat, capitale moderne, ouverte sur l'Occident porte-t-elle la modernité des femmes ?
Cet ouvrage se propose de répondre à toutes ces questions et il entend montrer l'évolution de la place des femmes à travers l'analyse de l'espace (la ville et le logement) tel qu'il est vécu, utilisé et pratiqué par les femmes. En effet, le contexte urbain révèle et reproduit les inégalités entre les sexes et nous montre comment chacun des deux sexes vit la ville à sa manière et s'y comporte selon les normes et les valeurs qu'elle lui dicte. Il est intéressant d'analyser la particularité de l'occupation et de l'organisation de l'espace par les femmes.
Il s'agit aussi d'explorer leurs actions et leurs compétences pour gérer l'espace domestique, leurs stratégies résidentielles et familiales et de voir les ressources ou les stratégies de contournement et de détournement auxquelles elles ont recours pour arriver à leurs fins, ainsi que les différents changements qu'elles inscrivent dans la vie sociale

Safâa Monqid est sociologue et arabisante. Elle est maître de conférences à l’université Paris 3, Sorbonne nouvelle. Elle a été responsable du programme Femmes et ville au Centre d’études et de documentation économiques juridiques et sociales (Cedej) au Caire, entre 2008 et 2011.

Zorbaugh ? élève de Park et Burgess à l'université ? a recueilli des témoignages écrits auprès de femmes de la haute société. Trois de ces textes, retrouvés dans les archives de Burgess, sont publiés ici. Ils montrent avec beaucoup de saveur les règles du jeu social et le rôle crucial des femmes dans le fonctionnement de ce monde, la façon dont elles se conforment aux contraintes tout en s'en jouant, mais aussi le prix qu'elles doivent payer pour s'acquitter de cette tâche. Ces documents permettent aussi d'observer de près en quoi consistait une enquête au département de sociologie de Chicago dans les années 1920.

Women, Power and Municipal Policies in the Quebec Metropolitan Area.
The participation of women in the political sphere has not progressed as rapidly as their participation in the labour force. This creates a problem since the feminization of the labour force generates new social needs which are often not adequately understood, let alone dealt with, by the various levels of government, including the municipalities. How are the municipalities taking into account these new needs and what is the effect of the political participation of women on the responsiveness of municipalities? An analysis conducted in the Quebec Metropolitan Area reveals a spectrum in the municipal responses, from policies dealing somewhat narrowly with family issues to much more encompassing measures, including basic social needs, sometimes even formulated in feminist terms. The factors underlying this range of responses may include the level of internal social differentiation of localities, women's level of education as well as their participation in urban debates and their access to elected positions.
La participation des femmes à la sphère politique n'a pas progressé aussi rapidement que leur participation à la main-d'œuvre. Or, cette dernière fait naître de nouveaux besoins sociaux, souvent très pressants, qui interpellent les pouvoirs publics, tout particulièrement les municipalités. Celles-ci répondent-elles à ces nouveaux besoins et la participation politique des femmes influence-t-elle les réponses municipales? Nous abordons ces questions à l'aide d'une analyse de données inédites portant sur les municipalités de l'agglomération urbaine de Québec. Notre analyse permet d'identifier des orientations politiques à portée familiale et d'autres à portée plus féministe. Elle permet aussi d'évaluer l'impact des facteurs susceptibles de sous-tendre les orientations politiques des municipalités en matière de réponse aux nouveaux besoins sociaux. Parmi ces facteurs, il faut compter la taille et la différenciation interne des localités, le niveau de scolarité des femmes, leur participation aux débats urbains et leur accès aux postes électifs.
