<text>This study examines road risks among residents of deprived neighbourhoods targeted by social policy compared with residents of other contiguous neighbourhoods that are socially more privileged. The data used are from accident reports filled in by the police. When these data are brought to the level of the population in the areas studied, the adjusted relative risk for those living in sensitive urban areas compared with those living in other areas is assessed at 1.366 (with a 95% confidence interval from 1.240 to 1.502). Distributions by age and gender are then studied. In the discussion, several hypotheses concerning behaviour, mobility and socio-spatial factors are discussed. Deprived areas, socioeconomic differences, accident risk, age, gender.</text>

<text>This chapter analyzes various spatial aspects of tourism growth in the city of Udaipur in southern Rajasthan (India). It examines the political, social and economic relationship between tourism and territory, in particular the impact of tourism on the city's urban layout, the resulting uneven economic development and its political consequences. It discusses tourism as a social phenomenon encouraging the economic specialization of particular areas and modifying social relationships between those involved in tourism and others.</text>

              <elementText elementTextId="638663">
<text>Based on an analysis of the issues of street control and regulation in the face of marginalized populations in Canada and elsewhere, the author proposes the hypothesis of an “ecosanitary imaginary” guiding the rationality of managers of street urbanity in a context of global economic integration. The many repressive legal measures or dissuasive measures on practices governing space, which are deployed in public spaces, would be legitimized by three broad normative fields that would tend to be asserted as an urban moral order: utility, sanitation and security. Using empirical examples, a description of these normative fields is presented that hinges on four poles of socio-spatial depictions organized in dualities: dirtiness/cleanliness ; insecurity/security ; incivility/civility ; and wild/civilized. The ecosanitary imaginary of street control would then become a positivist morality of urbanity by reducing social issues of marginalization to environmental imbalances that are of concern for democratic life. This normalized vision of the world of the street would serve municipalities interested in joining the select club of global cities, hiding the policy of spatialization of a consumption-based urbanity that is inherent in this urban transformation operation.</text>

<text>Why do new urban spaces lack feeling, power and sensory quality? Why does 'urbanness' retreat from the newly produced public spaces? Why does the political significance of urban space seem to be lost? In this research, the structures of thinking in planning and architecture are identified as a key reason for those problems. Urban reality is never 'transparent' to the planners. Rather, planning is conducted in an artificial reality, which I call Concept City, characterised by a simplified and outdated conception of space.

Thus, the aim of this thesis is to formulate a new, richer theory about space in general and public urban space in particular. The new theory includes physical space, its use and, as the most difficult aspect, the personal, singular moments of invention and existentially important experiences that are indispensable elements of the lived urban space. Instead of visual and practico-material, space is understood as socially produced. The central new notions the work develops, include 1) 'weak place', a new conceptualisation of place as the individual and singular moment of signification; 2) 'spatial dialectics 2.0', a development of Henri Lefebvre's dialectique de triplicité; and 3) 'quasi-object', leading to a new interpretation of the role of material artefacts and spatial configurations in the production of space. The work contextualises Lefebvre's ideas to urban planning and architecture. It aims at reconceptualising the notions of space and place in those fields in such a way that the conflictual coming-together of individual experiences, spatial practices and public perceptions can be understood as the constituent process of public urban space.

Though the thesis is primarily a theoretical treatise, it is grounded on empirical observations in Helsinki, with references to Manchester and Berlin. Since the late 1980s, urban events have had an important role in the production of new public urban spaces in Helsinki. In events, citizens have claimed urban space, producing new meanings and new uses. Simultaneously, processes of commercialisation and routinisation of the event scene have taken place. The material of Experience and Conflict focuses on the period, marked by two major events in Senate Square, the Total Balalaika Show (1993) and its tenth anniversary, the Global Balalaika Show. A juxtaposition of both symbolic.and configurational centrality and marginality is found to characterise the most successful event venues. Töölönlahti Bay area is emblematic in this respect. The struggle to save the old railway warehouses Makasiinit for event uses and its repercussions on the public imagination about desirable city life are seen as the culmination of the urban cultural change of that decade. Makasiinit also provides an important theoretical lesson, because there the material shell of the buildings momentarily acted as the 'Other' of the spatial dialectics, thus dynamising the socio-material situation.

Finally, the influences of the new theory in planning and design methods are discussed through the author's own projects. New approaches and tools leading to 'experiential urbanism' are suggested and developed. </text>

<text>This article discusses the changes in the meaning of public space on the beaches during the ceremonies of the african-brazilian religions, taking as a case study the Umbanda rituals in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The beach is a space typically used in leisure activities, but during the rituals, a large part of sand is occupied by the faithful, receiving, however, the legitimacy and respect from other people on site. This article presents an ethnographic description of the ambiance from the first moments of the ceremony, when altars dedicated to Yemanja (goddess of the sea) are installed in tents. The research which bases this article aims to show how the transformation of the ambiance (as a cultural and social history of a society) can generate a re-signification of public space by assigning a religious sense.</text>

<text>Mental representations of spatial knowledge are organized hierarchically. Among people familiar with an urban environment, common spatial knowledge from these spatial mental representations enables successful communication of place and route descriptions, consisting of hierarchically-ordered references to prominent spatial features, such as streets. The more prominent a street is, the more likely it is to be known by the wayfinder receiving the directions. The automated construction of such descriptions therefore requires hierarchical data models ranking streets in street networks. This paper explores the reasons of overlaps in the content and hierarchical organization of common spatial knowledge among locals. We introduce a novel measure allowing to rank streets in a street network. This ranking allows to construct experiential hierarchies reflecting the shared experience of the streets in a city. The measure is derived from network connectivity measures, and takes into account the structure of the street network as well as the higher-order partition of the urban space into suburbs.</text>
