En choisissant de faire de la planche à roulettes (ou skateboard) sur la place Vauquelin, dans le Vieux-Montréal, des groupes adolescents saisissent une occasion pour imposer dans cet espace des rites ludiques. Durant l'été, l'activité s'octroie ce site urbain et le détourne des fonctions prévues par les gestionnaires de la ville. Le skateur saute au dessus des bancs, vient heurter le rebord des marches. Site touristique dont le mobilier urbain (fontaine, bancs, monument, marches, etc.) représente le partenaire ludique. Depuis quelques années, le skateboard occupe la place Vauquelin en bravant les interdits de la police ou les règles de la convenance publique. Sensation de s'être approprié ce lieu pour en faire un point de chute, phénomène pourvu de suggestivités symboliques que les gestionnaires de la ville ne peuvent admettre et donc, tentent de contrôler. Aux yeux des citadins, cette mise en scène traduit-elle une relation d'opposition secrètement désirée vis-a-vis de l'aménagement urbain ? En dérogeant aux règles de la convenance publique, ce jeu adolescent est-il le produit privilégié d'un engagement critique face à la rationalisation urbaine ? Le skateur aspire-t-il à se déjouer de la fonctionnalité urbaine ? Pour élucider ce questionnement, il a fallu aller à la rencontre de ces groupes sur la place Vauquelin. D'une observation distancée, puis progressivement installée dans le rôle du participant, j'ai tenté d'identifier l'imaginaire de cette expression ludique. C'est en posant le skate comme jeu de défi, jeu de simulacre et jeu de vertige, que j'ai organisé cette ethnographie. L'idée centrale qui motive une telle démarche réside dans le fait que le terrain d'observation n'est pas le lieu prétexte à la vérification hypothético-déductive, il est l'espace même dans et à partir duquel se construit le discours théorique. L'objectif général de cette rédaction est de témoigner comment, et à partir du jeu, des groupes d'adolescents peuvent profiter de la ville sous le signe de l'appropriation. Exploration spatiale, mais surtout explorations des codes sociaux, le skateboard nous révèle la modernité urbaine. Présent dans quasiment toutes les grandes cités occidentales,auprès des adolescents, le skate favorise une perception autre de la ville.
