L'expansion de l'usage du wolof, parmi les jeunes et les femmes principalement, a provoqué un recentrage ethnique et des réactions de défense des langues de groupe. Le contexte socio-économique, difficile, stimule la mobilité sous tous ses aspects; et l'usage du wolof en est le corollaire. L'école, comme lieu de rassemblement et de résolution des différences, est le domaine privilégié où se vernacularise cette langue, initialement vehiculaire. On présente ici des résultats d'une enquête réalisée auprès d'une population scolarisée, plus particulièrement des jeunes Diola qui appartiennent à l'éthnie majoritaire. Leurs répertoires et l'usage qu'ils en font en famille et avec leurs amis sont considérés sous l'angle du groupe, comme sous celui de la relation avec les autres groupes qui coexistent avec eux dans des quartiers centraux ou périphériques de la ville. La problématique porte sur le re-équilibrage de l'usage du wolof, du français et des langues de groupe dans cet environnement. Or, en un peu plus d'un siècle, les trois-quarts de ces pays en ont changé (certains à plusieurs reprises), condamnant en général à un profond déclin les capitales déchues, que seul peut, parfois, revitaliser le tourisme. Les transferts les plus anciens étaient en effet des tâtonnements des administrations coloniales afin de sélectionner le meilleur site (surtout par rapport aux voies de communication ou au climat), les réajustements ultérieurs correspondants plutôt au choix de positions plus centrales. Aux indépendances, le mouvement fut surtout d'appropriation des grandes villes, quand ce n'était pas déjà fait, alors que, depuis, il s'agit, au contraire, de décongestionner les trop grandes capitales par des créations ex nihilo.
