At the eighth annual European Research Conference on Homelessness, held in the Alice Salomon Hochschule in Berlin on 20th September 2013, a range of stimulating papers were presented on different aspects of how to move from shelter led to housing led services, and the nature of the supports required to sustain secure occupancy of dwellings for formerly homeless people. The European Journal of Homelessness is delighted to publish a select number of the papers presented at the conference and to further inform the debate on Housing Led / Housing First policies and practices in Europe.

Sommaire :

Michel Wieviorka - Avant-propos
Li Hongtu - Introduction

I. Research has concentrated on the role of city-states and their republican polities as harbingers of the modern state, or else on their artistic and cultural achievements, above all in Italy. Much less attention has been devoted to the cities' territorial expansion: why, how, and with what consequences cities in the urban belt, stretching from central and northern Italy over the Alps to Switzerland, Germany, and the low countries, succeeded (or failed) in constructing sovereign polities, with or without dependent territories.

Tom Scott goes beyond the customary focus on the leading Italian city-states to include, for the first time, detailed coverage of the Swiss city-states and the imperial cities of Germany. He criticizes current typologies of the city-state in Europe advanced by political and social scientists to suggest that the city-state was not a spent force in early modern Europe, but rather survived by transformation and adaption. He puts forward instead a typology which embraces both time and space by arguing for a regional framework for analysis which does not treat city-states in isolation but within a wider geopolitical setting.

Tom Scott is Honorary Professor, School of History, University of St Andrews

</text>

The processes of their accommodation, however, differ, with local authorities and other state institutions playing an important role in these processes. Offering comprehensive empirical insights both from recent sites of immigration in Southern Europe, as well as from places of more established immigration in the north, this book examines the accommodation of migrant organizations in different cities and the factors that affect this process. It thus sheds light on the manner in which the interplay of immigration regime, national integration policy and local responses shape the differing patterns and trajectories observed in the formation and action of migrant organizations across Europe.

Margit Fauser is a researcher and lecturer in the faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, Germany.

</text>

                <text>

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

This book explores the history, the reality, and the complex fantasy of American and European Chinatowns and traces the patterns of transnational travel and traffic between China, South East Asia, Europe, and the United States which informed the development of these urban sites. Despite obvious structural or architectural similarities and overlaps, Chinatowns differ markedly depending on their location. European versions of Chinatowns can certainly not be considered mere replications of the American model. Paying close attention to regional specificities and overarching similarities, Chinatowns thus discloses the important European backdrop to a phenomenon commonly associated with North America. It starts from the assumption that the historical and modern Chinatown needs to be seen as complicatedly involved in a web of cultural memory, public and private narratives, ideologies, and political imperatives. Most of the contributors to this volume have multidisciplinary and multilingual backgrounds and are familiar with several different instances of the Chinese diasporic experience. With its triangular approach to the developments between China and the urban Chinese diasporas of North America and Europe, Chinatowns reveals connections and interlinkages which have not been addressed before.

Vanessa Künnemann is Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Hannover.
Ruth Mayer is Chair of American Studies at the University of Hannover.

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

The twentieth century in Europe was an urban century: it was shaped by life in, and the view from, the street. Women were not liberated in legislatures, but liberated themselves in factories, homes, nightclubs, and shops. Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini made themselves powerful by making cities ungovernable with riots rampaging through streets, bars occupied one-by-one. New forms of privacy and isolation were not simply a by-product of prosperity, but because people planned new ways of living, new forms of housing in suburbs and estates across the continent. Our proudest cultural achievements lie not in our galleries or state theatres, but in our suburban TV sets, the dance halls, pop music played in garages, and hip hop sung on our estates.

In Streetlife , Leif Jerram presents a totally new history of the twentieth century, with the city at its heart, showing how everything distinctive about the century, from revolution and dictatorship to sexual liberation, was fundamentally shaped by the great urban centres which defined it.

Features :
A totally new history of twentieth century Europe, told through its cities
Shows how the city fundamentally shaped the history of the continent in our time, from Hitler to hip-hop, suburbanization to sexual liberation
Invites us to view familiar themes - like the rise of fascism, the cold war, the working class struggle for a good standard of living - from a new perspective

Leif Jerram is a lecturer in urban history in the School of Arts at Manchester University.

</text>
