Parmi ces th&amp;egrave;mes nous pouvons relever la question des transformations des villes et des territoires dans le monde actuel, leur influence sur le paysage, mais aussi l&amp;rsquo;&amp;eacute;volution de l&amp;rsquo;architecture, &amp;agrave; l&amp;rsquo;aulne d&amp;rsquo;un regard historique mais aussi tourn&amp;eacute; vers le futur. Nous pouvons ajouter une grand nombre de probl&amp;eacute;matiques inh&amp;eacute;rentes &amp;agrave; la recherche et &amp;agrave; ses enjeux dans un monde intellectuel et acad&amp;eacute;mique o&amp;ugrave; elle a de moins en moins de place, l&amp;rsquo;importance de l&amp;rsquo;histoire et la perte de rep&amp;egrave;res ; des sujets tels que la complexit&amp;eacute; croissante, les influences qu&amp;rsquo;un intellectuel subit et sa fa&amp;ccedil;on de les assumer, compl&amp;egrave;tent ces r&amp;eacute;flexions. In a research   called &amp;lsquo;Measuring Socially Sustainable Urban Regeneration in Europe&amp;rsquo; by Andrea Colantonio and Tim Dixon et. al. it is argued that previous research on sustainability has been mainly limited to environmental and economic concerns. However in recent years social sustainability has gained increased recognition as a fundamental component of sustainable development, beginning to receive political and institutional endorsement within the sustainable development agenda, and the sustainable urban regeneration discourse.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Rationale: fuzzy understanding of social sustainability&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The delivery of sustainable urban development has moved to the heart of European urban policy through the development of several policy documents and agreements, including the 1998 document &amp;ldquo;Urban Sustainable Development in the EU: A Framework for Action&amp;rdquo;, the 2005 &amp;ldquo;Bristol Accord&amp;rdquo; and the 2007 &amp;ldquo;Leipzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities&amp;rdquo;. Although a growing recognition of social sustainability has spurred an emerging body of research and policy literature, our understanding of this concept is still fuzzy and limited by theoretical and methodological constraints stemming from its context and disciplinary-dependent interpretations. Furthermore, at a practice level, tools, instruments and metrics to foster sustainable urban development currently available are biased toward environmental and economic sustainability. As a result, there is a clear need for further research on both social sustainability and its measurement in the context of sustainable urban regeneration.&lt;/div&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
Aims and Objectives&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The main objectives of the research were to:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- define social sustainability and explore the main themes and dimensions at the heart of this concept, in the context of EU cities;&lt;br /&gt;
- examine to what extent, and in what ways, social sustainability is incorporated within urban renewal projects within the EU;&lt;br /&gt;
- critically review governance models and vehicles, which seek to deliver socially sustainable communities in urban areas, with special emphasis on Public Private Partnerships (PPPs);&lt;br /&gt;
- analyse the current sustainability indicators and tools used by the public, private and Non-Governmental Organisation sectors to deliver social sustainability;&lt;br /&gt;
- and examine and identify best practices to measure and monitor socially sustainable urban regeneration.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Definition of social sustainability&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the main findings of this research is the definition of social sustainability which is decribed as: &amp;ldquo;social sustainability concerns how individuals, communities and societies live with each other and set out to achieve the objectives of development models which they have chosen for themselves, also taking into account the physical boundaries of their places and planet earth as a whole. At a more operational level, social sustainability stems from actions in key thematic areas, encompassing the social realm of individuals and societies, which ranges from capacity building and skills development to environmental and spatial inequalities. In this sense, social sustainability blends traditional social policy areas and principles, such as equity and health, with emerging issues concerning participation, needs, social capital, the economy, the environment, and more recently, with the notions of happiness, wellbeing and quality of life.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/div&gt;

Dans cette perspective, il existe des lieux o&amp;ugrave; cette mobilit&amp;eacute; et cette connectivit&amp;eacute; sont tr&amp;egrave;s visibles, s'imposent comme la caract&amp;eacute;ristique du lieu, d'autres le montrent moins.&lt;br /&gt;

L'a&amp;eacute;roport occupe une position tout &amp;agrave; fait particuli&amp;egrave;re. Fonctionnel, monumental, d&amp;eacute;termin&amp;eacute; par le mouvement des avions qui le relient &amp;agrave; la globalit&amp;eacute; du monde, p&amp;eacute;n&amp;eacute;tr&amp;eacute; par les flux num&amp;eacute;riques sans lesquels aucun syst&amp;egrave;me de vol serait op&amp;eacute;rationnel aujourd'hui, l'a&amp;eacute;roport se situe &amp;agrave; l'interface entre diff&amp;eacute;rentes formes de d&amp;eacute;placement. Pour produire ces repr&amp;eacute;sentations, une recherche financ&amp;eacute;e par la Dapa (Direction d'architecture et du patrimoine) dans le cadre du programme &amp;quot;L'architecture de la grande &amp;eacute;chelle&amp;quot; a mis en place des exp&amp;eacute;rimentations qui s'inscrivent dans le champ artistique comme dans le champ architectural.&lt;br /&gt;

A partir de ces exp&amp;eacute;rimentations ponctuelles, des images et des savoirs ont &amp;eacute;merg&amp;eacute;. The paper considers how contemporary cities are constructed, framed and understood through  vertical axes and dimensions. It charts upward trajectories in not only iconic high-rises, but in  vertical gardens, townships, slums and urban farms, and in modes and methods of urban  transport. The paper argues that these vertical manifestations and domains of urban life are not  simply a response to space constraints and land values but mark and make visible new forms of  social and political power, which disrupt notions of centre-periphery in traditional, flatter models  of the city. Although recognising the validity and relevance of highlighting and analysing spatial  dichotomies between vertical and horizontal urban worlds, the paper seeks to complicate such  binaries.  Drawing on recent research from Mumbai, the paper explores and identifies overlapping (or vertizontal) connections, practices and assemblages in three-dimensional city-making.&lt;/div&gt;

Across the United States, historic preservation has become a catalyst for urban regeneration. Entrepreneurs, urban pioneers, and veteran city dwellers have refurbished thousands of dilapidated properties and put them to productive use as shops, restaurants, nightclubs, museums, and private residences. As a result, inner-cities, once disparaged as zones of poverty, crime, and decay have been re-branded as historic districts. Although these preservation initiatives, often supported by government tax incentives and rigid architectural controls, deserve credit for bringing people back to the city, raising property values, and generating tourist revenue, they have been less successful in creating stable and harmonious communities.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Beyond Preservation proposes a framework for stabilizing and strengthening inner-city neighborhoods through the public interpretation of historic landscapes. Its central argument is that inner-city communities can best turn preserved landscapes into assets by subjecting them to public interpretation at the grass-roots. Based on an examination of successful projects in St. Louis, Missouri and other U.S. cities, Andrew Hurley demonstrates how rigorous historical analysis can help communities articulate a local identity and plan intelligently on the basis of existing cultural and social assets.&lt;/div&gt;

In recent years, major sporting and cultural events such as the Olympic Games have emerged as significant elements of public policy, particularly in efforts to achieve urban regeneration. As well as opportunities arising from new venues, these events are viewed as a way of stimulating investment, gaining civic engagement and publicizing progress to assist the urban regeneration process more generally. However, the pursuit of regeneration involving events is a practice that is poorly understood, controversial and risky.&lt;br /&gt;

Events and Urban Regeneration is the first book dedicated to the use of events in regeneration. It explores the relationship between events and regeneration by analyzing a range of cities and a range of sporting and cultural events projects. It considers various theoretical perspectives to provide insight into why major events are important to contemporary cites. It examines the different ways that events can assist regeneration, as well as problems and issues associated with this unconventional form of public policy. It identifies key issues faced by those tasked with using events to assist regeneration and suggests how practices could be improved in the future.&lt;br /&gt;

This paper considers the work of one of Indonesia&amp;rsquo;s most prominent contemporary writers, Seno Gumira Ajidarma. In this paper, I look at how Seno&amp;rsquo;s writing over the last 30 years traces and documents changes in contemporary Indonesian urban societies &amp;ndash; and particularly that of Jakarta. This paper considers the importance and relevance of the notion of the urban based fl&amp;acirc;neur and whether or not the fl&amp;acirc;neur and the practice of fl&amp;acirc;nerie is part of literary imaginings in contemporary Indonesia. I ask whether or not to be a fl&amp;acirc;neur and to practice fl&amp;acirc;nerie is a critical social act which questions formal constructions and usages of urban space. This paper looks at the ways in which the practices of listening, hearing, looking and writing are invoked in selected novels, short stories and essays of Seno Gumira Ajidarma.&lt;br /&gt;

City planning initiatives and redesign of urban structures often become mired in debate and delay. Despite the fact that cities are considered to be dynamic, innovative and flexible spaces, never finished but always under construction, it is very difficult to change existing urban structures. Cities become fixed, obdurate, securely anchored in their own histories as well as in the histories of their surroundings. Yet, if cities fall victim to a disaster, change of urban structures is sudden, unexpected and often seen as undesirable. At the same time, it is argued that urban disasters can bring about urban innovation and that cities can even benefit from them. The talk will discuss how cities cope with obduracy and vulnerability. Why is it so difficult to bring about urban innovation once urban structures are in place? How do cities respond to urban disasters? How can we explain the &amp;lsquo;rhetoric of innovation&amp;rsquo; in cases of urban disaster? These issues will be discussed in relation to theories of obduracy and vulnerability in cities and illustrated with empirical cases.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Anique Hommels&lt;/b&gt; is associate professor at the Department of Technology &amp;amp; Society Studies, Maastricht University, the Netherlands. In her PhD thesis she concentrated on the resistance to change (&amp;lsquo;obduracy') in urban sociotechnical transformation processes. A book (Unbuilding Cities - Obduracy in Urban Sociotechnical Change (2005). The suburban subdivision, replete with identical houses, lawns, and families, is a familiar icon of contemporary American culture. Equally familiar are suburban governments, which many critics describe as providers of exclusive havens from urban problems. &lt;i&gt;Building Chicago &lt;/i&gt;examines the evolution of both the suburbs themselves and their governments, using Cook County, Illinois - which includes Chicago and its immediate ring of suburbs - as a case study. It argues that suburban government evolved to meet the demands of residents and real estate developers for services and amenities.&lt;/div&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
Until the 1860s, only two kinds of local government were available to Chiacgo area residents: the chartered urban form and the rural county/township organization. But by the first years of the twentieth century, the Chicago city center was ringed by dozens of suburban incorporated villages. Professor Keating's study explores these dramatic changes and the choices that led to this ring pattern now familiar in so many metropolitan areas. While the particulars are specific to Chiacgo, there are clear connections to other cities in the same period.&lt;/div&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
No previous study has systematically examined the evolution of suburban government; it has simply been accepted as a given form rather than an independent variable. &lt;i&gt;Building Chicago &lt;/i&gt;examines the dynamic development of suburban forms of government as part of the larger city building process, arguing that suburban government is distinguished not so much by form as by constituency, which was determined by the settlement patterns of a region.&lt;/div&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
In particular, transportation advances and the introduction of new integrated infrastructure systems to provide running water, indoor plumbing, and lighting transformed urban living in the nineteenth century. These services were initially available only in the centers of major urban areas, where they were introduced to protect the health and safety of residents. However, their amenity value surfaced quickly, and developers used such services to attract residents to their subdivisions on the outskirts of the city. The differing economic requirements needed to find homes in communities with differing amenities created individual suburbs with homogenous populations and provided the early constituency for distinctive suburban forms of government.&lt;/div&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
The physical sorting of constituents into homogenous subdivisions was critical to the patterns that developed. This segregation has had a profound effect on cities up to the present day, sorting residents into a divided metropolis. Professor Keating's study reveals the impact of suburban development on Chicago and on urban life and government throughout America.&lt;/div&gt;

Notre recherche s&amp;rsquo;organise autour des concepts d&amp;rsquo;art, d&amp;rsquo;espace urbain et d&amp;rsquo;utopie. L&amp;rsquo;accent sera mis sur le d&amp;eacute;calage existant entre l&amp;rsquo;espace con&amp;ccedil;u par les concepteurs des espaces urbains de la ville et l&amp;rsquo;espace pratiqu&amp;eacute;, pens&amp;eacute; ou relat&amp;eacute; par les passants.&lt;br /&gt;

Ce que l&amp;rsquo;on veut analyser plus pr&amp;eacute;cis&amp;eacute;ment c&amp;rsquo;est ce que devient, &amp;agrave; l&amp;rsquo;usage, une ville pens&amp;eacute;e en termes d&amp;rsquo;utopie et quels sont les avatars de la fonction de l&amp;rsquo;art fortement pr&amp;eacute;sente dans la conception. Dans ce sens, notre premi&amp;egrave;re question s&amp;rsquo;interroge sur les relations existantes entre l&amp;rsquo;art et l&amp;rsquo;espace urbain o&amp;ugrave; l&amp;rsquo;&amp;oelig;uvre se situe. Cette question sous-entend deux axes principaux &amp;agrave; explorer : celui qui questionne l&amp;rsquo;intention des concepteurs de ces espaces artialis&amp;eacute;s et celui qui s&amp;rsquo;int&amp;eacute;resse aux pratiques de l&amp;rsquo;espace urbain et &amp;agrave; la perception des &amp;oelig;uvres d&amp;rsquo;art dispos&amp;eacute;es &amp;agrave; travers le tissu urbain.&lt;br /&gt;

Pour nous mettre en &amp;oelig;uvre cette probl&amp;eacute;matique, tout en partant de l&amp;rsquo;ethnographie comme cadre m&amp;eacute;thodologique, nous avons d&amp;eacute;cid&amp;eacute; de nous concentrer sur une ville concr&amp;egrave;te, con&amp;ccedil;ue et construite d&amp;rsquo;une fa&amp;ccedil;on assez particuli&amp;egrave;re : Gibellina en Sicile (proche de Trapani). D&amp;eacute;truite en 1968 par un tremblement de terre, elle a &amp;eacute;t&amp;eacute; con&amp;ccedil;ue comme &amp;quot;le mus&amp;eacute;e d&amp;rsquo;art contemporain en plein air le plus grand d&amp;rsquo;Europe&amp;quot; et cette conception nous l&amp;rsquo;a fait choisir comme un excellent exemple pour &amp;eacute;tudier la probl&amp;eacute;matique que nous venons vient d&amp;rsquo;&amp;eacute;baucher.&lt;/div&gt;
