Whitehand : </b></div> </div> In this issue of Urban Morphology there are several contributions that combine, or consider the potential of combining, approaches that have hitherto had largely separate existences. Griffiths et al. combine Conzenian and space syntax approaches to the analysis of urban form (pp. 85-99), and conclude that the relationship between suburban built form and socioeconomic activity is both configurational and historical in nature. Stanilov considers the reciprocal benefits to be derived from linking urban modelling more closely with urban morphology (pp. 123-4). He argues that combining knowledge of land-use dynamics derived from urban modelling with knowledge of town plan and building typology gained from morphological analysis could be critical in developing understanding of how cities grow and change. He also envisages urban modelling as a medium for strengthening the place of urban morphology in the management of the built environment beyond its role in conservation. This standpoint is rather different from that adopted by Samuels (pp. 121-3). He makes the case for greater integration, but his focus is on the link between historical area assessment and urban morphology. La fabrique symbolique des métropoles au fil de leur mise en récits, des échanges qui la constituent et des prises de parole de leurs habitants (pour en constater les métamorphoses et pouvoir se les approprier au quotidien, pour en commenter les leurres et les opacités) constitue le sujet de ce dossier qui privilégie ainsi une approche inter-disciplinaire. <br />
<br />
L’affirmation de la métropole parisienne passe par sa capacité à s’écrire et à se dire, à s’imaginer et à se partager. Un déploiement d’images et de textes plus ou moins inédits et contradictoires participe du devenir métropole qui s’impose à l’agglomération parisienne et appelle des interprétations actualisées tant la métropolisation est un pro-cessus complexe, à la fois global et localisé, à la fois politique et ordinaire. Mettant à l’épreuve le mythe de Paris mais aussi la forme, l’organisation et les modalités de vie de la Capitale, la métropolisation demande un renouvellement des analyses urbaines, des lectures symboliques et donc un dialogue entre des approches contrastées.</div>

Ce dossier interroge la pertinence contemporaine de l'informel dans ses dimensions spatiales et urbaines. Il propose un questionnement épistémologique des différentes perceptions localisées et territorialisées auxquelles renvoie la notion d'informel. Les divers usages de l'informel, mais aussi ceux du formel, sont appréhendés de façon très concrète, par les citadins dans leur vie quotidienne, mais aussi dans l'analyse et la construction de la notion. La politique de prévention de la délinquance et la politique de la ville ont toujours eu partie liée. Mais qu’en est-il, aujourd’hui, des relations entre politique de la ville et prévention de la délinquance ? Sommes-nous passés à une nouvelle étape d’un processus démarré voilà trente ans ou assistons-nous à un changement de cap ?<br />
<br />
Tel est le fil rouge de ce numéro qui, après une première partie présentant le contexte général dans lequel prend place la politique de prévention de la délinquance, consacre la seconde partie à la question des émeutes urbaines en partant des événements de Grenoble de juillet 2010. La troisième partie propose, à partir d’une analyse des changements à l’oeuvre en matière législative, de donner à voir la manière dont ils ont été perçus et pris en compte sur le terrain, que ce soit du côté de la justice, de l’école, de la prévention spécialisée, et bien sûr des villes. La conclusion est une invitation à décentrer son regard à partir d’expériences internationales.<br />

This introduction places the articles in the broader context of two prominent urban themes. One is the distinctiveness of the ancient and ever-changing cities of the Middle East. Cities in the region certainly differ among themselves, but share some commonalities in history, spatial structure, political organization, and culture. However, that distinctiveness is eroding under the external influences of globalization, international politics, and neoliberal policies. The second theme in these articles is that of divided or contested cities. The authors apply more general theories of social and symbolic boundaries to urban sociology as well as theories of the social construction of urban space, its representational force and cultural significance.</div>
