The distinguished geographer and social theorist, David Harvey, will be the 22nd Annual Urban Studies Public Lecturer. The lecture is entitled ‘Neoliberalism and the City’, and will take place Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 5:00 PM.

In his talk, Harvey will draw on his recent book, A Brief History of Neoliberalism (2005), in which he traces the rise of neoliberal principles based on the theory of free markets and unfettered international capital flows from an obscure economic theory to dominance on the world stage. Harvey shows how proponents of a neoliberal economic philosophy, such as the influential leaders Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, gained the consensus of key figures and economic and political institutions, driven by an aspiration to re-establish class power. He dissects the logic of neoliberalism, revealing its built-in contradictions and the tremendous variation in how it looks from place to place and at different scales. He will talk about how cities have both complied and resisted neoliberalism’s discipline.

David Harvey’s career has had several phases, from work on the methodology and philosophy of geography and historical geography to an exploration of Marxist approaches, particularly related to urbanization and the crises of poverty and racism in US cities. His later work delves into such issues as environmental justice, alternative modes of urbanization, progressive approaches to addressing problems of the environment and inequality. His most recent works looks at questions of globalization and uneven geographical development within a globalizing world.

David Harvey is a Distinguished Professor in the Ph.D. Program in Anthropology at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

How are new digital media changing how we build and maintain the social connections that make urban environments vibrant? This panel brings together experts from humanities, social science, and technology to focus on questions of how computer networks and social networks are reshaping, remapping, and remaking cities. Technology and infrastructure have always helped to define urban environments and rapidly changing information and communication technologies are no exception. From digital maps to online social networks, new technologies are changing what we know about the cities we are in, how we use them, and how we connect to one another.

In this talk, 2011-2012 GCI Faculty Scholar De Jong will discuss the research and writing she is undertaking during her fellowship year at the Institute. Her project investigates how American cultural attitudes about urban life in the metropolis, reinforced by significant demographic change, are dissolving traditional relationships between city and suburb and producing new spatial and formal conditions; in particular, the project aims to identify new models for (sub)urbanisation.

<text>This paper presents the results of a magnetic survey on the Hellenistic and Roman site of Doura-Europos in Syria. The interpretation of the magnetic data is based on an original approach by considering the use of space in a domestic unit. This type of study has been developed for sociological research but is adapted to the information carriedwithin geophysical data. After a brief presentation of the role of geophysicalmethods for the study of city planning, the most important components of the ‘space syntax' will be presented and applied to two blocks of Doura-Europos, one that has been excavated in the twentieth century by theYale University and another surveyed using the magnetic method.</text>

- Rachid Sidi Boumedine : Une ville nouvelle ? Où ? Pourquoi ? Comment ?
- Deni Ruggeri : Un concept voyageur.

</text>

<text>At the beginning of the 21st century, urban spaces can be said to be in a stage of growth and radical transformation. Cities are highly expansive, both in scale and scope. The spatial configuration of urban spaces is, however, becoming more and more decentralised and fragmentary. The traditional dichotomy between urban hierarchy and periphery is disappearing. New metropolitan spaces are characterised by distance related processes of social and economic specialisation and segmentation, and often also by splitting social polarisation. The planning agendas in city regions are trying to make add more balance to the process of disruptive urban development. This paper briefly explores the transformation of metropolitan spaces using a generic approach. The article also focuses on the attempts in metropolitan planning strategies to cope with these challenges under different typical institutional conditions of regions in Europe. Finally, the paper investigates the potential impact of strategic urban projects as regards a more balanced shaping of urban transformation. The questions dealt with are: How are urban mega projects conceptually framed, how are the supporting alliances mobilised and how are citizens and social groups involved in order to create new integrated urban space ? </text>

A new atmosphere created by sulfuric oxide smells took possession of the Right Bank with sulfuric acid and coal, while mercury fumes and chloride, used respectively for gilding copper and felting hats, poisoned the neighbourhoods downstream and upstream as Paris became the first European producer of luxury items. Before 1789, smells came from fermenting materials and the putrefaction of nightsoil. After 1800, Montfaucon became the world's leading craft district and its stench crossed the Seine and spread as far as the Sorbonne. Along the Bievre River, tanneries and fine leather crafts were so polluted that neither flies nor mosquitoes could ever survive, workers never caught malaria but a lot of lung ailments.</text>

<text>In this paper, a modelling framework to complete the recent scientific works on urban goods modelling is proposed. More precisely, we introduce a substitution procedure that estimates the number of trips and the corresponding travelled distances for shopping drive, home delivery and reception points' strategies. Moreover, an appraisal of scenarios is proposed in order to study how these three new forms of proximity delivery services impact on the overall urban goods movement distribution. Starting from four extreme situations, we introduce more realistic scenarios in order to find a suitable combination of delivery strategies. All the scenarios are simulated using the proposed framework, and the main traffic issues related to e-commerce distribution channel are discussed. The best realistic combination promotes the joint usage of home deliveries and proximity reception points and allows a reduction of about 13% of the road occupancy rates in urban areas.</text>

</text>
