Parce qu'elles concentrent tous les problèmes du temps, l'imaginaire en a fait des espaces légendaires qui simultanément inquiètent mais rassurent en ce qu'elles permettent « d'externaliser » ces mêmes difficultés. La peur et le mépris social contribuent ainsi à renforcer cette mise au ban. Espaces d'assignation, ces quartiers où aucun citadin ne va jamais se promener, semblent plus ouverts sur les images du monde que sur la ville-centre dont ils marquent la périphérie. Les paraboles accrochées aux fenêtres captent les flux d'images circulant à l'échelle planétaire. Le petit écran ouvre, au-delà du lieu, sur un autre espace sémantique, à partir duquel peut se construire le sens de ce qui se vit, là. Ces lieux sont ainsi paradoxalement au cœur de cette dynamique de « déterritorialisation » qui infléchit aujourd'hui les rapports entre espace, culture, société, et pouvoir . Les images télévisées viennent irriguer des imaginaires identitaires, nourrir d'autres signes, la diversité des mondes qui habitent ces espaces. Entre les mondes nostalgiques de l'exil et ceux que se créent les enfants de l'immigration, sur le mode de la tradition réinventée ou de l'identité réactive, se pose cette autre question cruciale de la modernité urbaine : celle de la construction d'un sens commun, partagé . Le propos de cet article est d'interroger la place et le rôle de l'oralité dans ce contexte particulier. Nous suivrons la parole et les liens qu'elle contribue à nouer et à dénouer, en évoquant trois actes de langage qui nous semblent jouer un rôle essentiel dans la sociabilité des collectifs de jeunes de ces quartiers : les ragots, les vannes et la promesse. Ce seront enfin les récits par l'intermédiaire desquels ces jeunes se racontent qui retiendront notre analyse... L'objectif de cet article est tout d'abord d'analyser le rôle de la parole en situation de désaffiliation. In this article we propose to describe the ambiance in one of the oldest cosmopolitan neighbourhoods of Paris, La Goutte d’Or. We will analyse the currents driving public life, which has clung to this space despite “urban renewal” policies spanning 30 years. The neighbourhood operates as a centrality, a hub of networks for immigrant communities, and the street here has been turned into an arena for social interaction and informal business activities. It is both a source of cultural inspiration and rejuvenation, and a popular “cosmo-political” scene, a multi-faceted world subjected to constant tension. We study the spontaneous gatherings prompted day after day by the spectacle of the street, the dynamics of communication and concern stirred up by public life. We see that this ambiance is a many-sided forge, the focus of much attention, dispersing opinions, redefining thresholds, a forge crystallizing a variety of publics mutually concerned by what they can or cannot share. Pointing to the scarcity of Spanish studies on issues of gentrification and drawing on a corpus of photographs of Ciutat Vella, i.e. the medieval and pre-19th century centre of Barcelona, the author seeks to underline the contribution of this methodology to understand a phenomenon which deeply modifies the urban and social landscape. La première phase de métropolisation de cette ville, entre 1900 et 1970, est intimement liée à la forte immigration interne qu'elle a connu en provenance des régions les plus pauvres du reste de l'Espagne. Celle-ci est un facteur explicatif tant de la polarisation démographique, économique, que fonctionnelle. Il existe en fait une relation dialectique complexe entre métropolisation, immigration et identité. Dotée d'une forte identité distincte de celle des migrants, exprimée notamment par la langue et les revendications des mouvements nationalistes, la métropole a pourtant intégré plus de trois millions de migrants de l'intérieur. La décennie 70, marquée par le statut d'autonomie accordé par la nouvelle constitution démocratique, par la crise économique qui provoque d'intenses recompositions de l'espace métropolitain, est aussi, pour l'ensemble des grandes métropoles dans le monde, le début d'une nouvelle phase de métropolisation, marqué par la décentralisation des activités et des hommes au sein d'un espace métropolitain de plus en plus vaste et qui connaît par ailleurs une réorganisation fonctionnelle. Les nouveaux mouvements migratoires internationaux vers Barcelone qui présentent une extrême diversité d'origine et de caractères socioprofessionnels, participent à ces nouvelles tendances de la métropolisation, chaque groupe migrant présentant des territorialités spécifiques et complémentaires qui s'inscrivent dans les nouvelles logiques spatiales de la métropole. L'identité catalane s'en trouve également transformée, les recompositions migratoires apparaissant sur ce plan comme un révélateur des relations entre nationalisme et mondialisation.
