</text>

<text>Along the history, the role played by the cities was important both for the development of the mercantile capitalism as for the growth of the industrial capitalism, by means of the national markets building. The financial capital, whose logic is inherent in a globalized environment, was also constituted at the cities, reinforcing the relationships among markets, including the emergent ones. In these countries some of the cities are highlighted and got strategic importance incorporating functions that transcend the boundaries of the countries where they are located. In this article are taken three of the cities of these countries – Mumbai, São Paulo and Joannesburg – and examined the composition of their Stock Exchange indices. These organizations, due to its multiscale dimensions, lead to the comprehension of the logic, the direction and the intensity of the investments insertion in the global economy. The study shows not only the weight of commodities in correlation with those indexes, but also the regionalized distribution of the investments referred to each of the Stock Exchanges. </text>

</text>

<text>This conceptual paper identifies a gap between two meaningful fields of research in urban geography : the first, old-established and reinforced by the European integration process, asks for recent and future trends, primarily on intra-urban development of cities on the European scale. The second focuses on inter-urban relations on a global scale, inspired by global city theories established since early 1990s. As a consequence of this research gap, a research agenda has been formulated with the aim to deliver the missing links between these two fields. Therein, three methodological improvements are put forward : first, more research has to be done to prove the widely accepted thesis of an existing link between global integration and internal urban structure. Second, the role of specific national politics for the production of a global city has to be examined – such as the type of welfare-regime or the impact of historical political structures. Finally, global city research should seriously consider the territorial arrangements that impinge upon the development of global cities on a national and a European scale. </text>

<text>Extract from Part I - Introductory: The modern city:
The most striking characteristics of present-day civilization are industrialization and urbanization. They present the environment, both natural and human, to which an increasing majority of people must adapt. Both phenomena represent recent, radical changes calling forth new types of adjustment... It is with the history of this great problem of adjustment - the successes and failures which societies have had in attempting to meet their great group needs - that this book will deal.

<text>When an household needs to change its home, a new house must be bought and the old one must be sold. In order to complete these two transactions, the household can adopt either a sequential or a simultaneous search strategy. In sequential strategies, it first buys (or sells) and only after tries to sell (or buy), to avoid either being homeless or holding two houses, respectively. In the simultaneous strategy, the household tries to buy and sell simultaneously. If the household adopts the simultaneous strategy, it can reduce its search costs, but becomes exposed to the risk of becoming a homeless renter or the owner of two houses. The literature generally considers only the sequential search strategy. However, we show in this article that the simultaneous strategy is (i) generally welfare improving for households, (ii) sometimes the sole equilibrium strategy, and (iii) at the origin of price dispersion on the housing market.</text>

This lecture places the attack on the World Trade Center in the context of New York's history as a place that is seemingly destined to be destroyed and rebuilt with stunning regularity. It explores three ways of looking at a central experience, and cultural trope, about New York City: that it is a city of creative destruction, regularly destroying and rebuilding itself. Professor Page begins with a discussion of extraordinary moments of destruction, both natural and human-made (from fires and blizzards, to acts of terrorism), and then argues that it is the "regular" processes of creative destruction - through private real estate development and government urban renewal - which are far more important in shaping both New York's physical organization as well as its cultural image. Finally, he explores how the imagination of New York's destruction - in art, literature, and cinema - is not only at the heart of New York life but of American culture as a whole.
