</text>

                <text>During the last thirty years, few different experiments on protection of wild fauna in Brazil have led to the development of inhabited protected areas, seen as socially more acceptable and fairer. However, since their creation, the validity of this kind of protected areas has been questioned, considering that the coexistence between men and wild fauna may have negative effects for environment as well as local communities. This paper focuses on human/wildlife conflicts in a rural community in the sustainable development reserve of Tupé, located in the periphery of Manaus city. It mainly observes how conflicts are perceived and resolved and it shows how diverse are the representations regarding problematic species, as well as environmental and social issues related to their protection. </text>

Since most of these citiy-regions tend to see a creative knowledge economy as 'the best bet for the future', one of the main goals of such policies and strategies is increasing the international competitiveness of their city-region. Using the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Birmingham, Helsinki, Leipzig, Manchester, and Munich as case studies, this book explores the spatial, economic, historical, socio-demographic, socio-cultural and political conditions that may determine whether a city-region is or can become attractive for creative and knowledge-intensive companies, and for the talented people working for or founding these companies. A comparison of the case studies and an overview of the key findings, similarities and differences which lead to policy recommendations as well as suggested directions for further research will make this book attractive to urban and regional academics, planners and students.

Marco Bontje is Assistant Professor at the Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
Sako Musterd is Professor of Social and Urban Geography at the University of Amsterdam.
Peter Pelzer is Editor of AGORA magazine and a former researcher on the Inventive City-regions project at the University of Amsterdam.

</text>

                <text>La recherche en question s´attache à étudier les lieux d´échange et de transaction entre population autochtone et immigrants - mais aussi entre les différents groupes d´immigrés au sein de l´agglomération lausannoise- ainsi que le contexte de leur émergence, leur histoire et les discours qui les supportent. Cette démarche permet de rendre compte de ces mêmes lieux, de leur rôle dans la ville et des différents types de relations qui peuvent s´y nouer, en privilégiant les représentations, la construction du sens, la manière de structurer l´espace. L´intérêt pour ces "lieux hybrides" est né, en réalité, de l´idée que l´immigration dans les centres urbains favorise de plus en plus des "cultures de la mixité" qui représentent un enjeu central en matière de cohabitation et d´intégration des populations à l´échelle urbaine. L´étude est centrée sur la tentative de saisir la signification de ces lieux hybrides dans la perspective propre aux acteurs qui les fréquentent ou les jugent. On aura ainsi recours aux méthodes de l´observation participante, à l´enregistrement de situations d´interaction et à leur interprétation ainsi qu´à des entretiens non structurés dans le but de cerner dans le détail la mécanique des processus d´intégration et de ségrégation.</text>

                <text>The object of this research was the study of those places in which exchanges and transactions take place not only between immigrants and the indigenous population, but also between the different ethnic immigrant groups within the Lausanne agglomeration. The study also examined the context in which these places emerged, their history and the discourses which constitute their apologies. This approach allows us to understand the nature of these places, of their role within the urban environment and of the different types of relationships which can be created. It permits us to do this by placing the emphasis on the representations that are made of them, on the construction of sense and the way in which space is structured. Our interest in these "hybrid places" stems from the notion that immigration in urban centres promotes a "culture of mixedness" which in itself represents the central issue in the whole question of cohabitation between and integration of different populations at the urban scale. The focus is on the attempt to understand the significance of these hybrid places in the eyes of those actors who use them, or pass judgement on them. The ethno-methodological approach is that of participating observation, the recording and interpretation of interactions as well as unstructured interviews, with that aim to ascertain the details of integration and segregation processes.</text>

At all level of governance, the inertia of efficient decisions as well as their funding affects the capacity of the city to recover quickly.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher:

At first glance a study on cities and foreign policy may seem a bold leap into the future of international relations, but it represents, rather, a giant step into the present--into what is already taking place across this country and around the world. Cities have become actors in international affairs; and American cities have not only been players on the world scene but have been deeply transformed on the process as well. Over the last four years, the Council on Foreign Relations has been studying new actors in international affairs: business, nongovernmental organizations (particularly on such issues as the environment, human rights, and humanitarian relief and aid), and certain regions and localities that now orient their "foreign" policy or actions somewhat independently from that of their central governments. Of these new global actors, cities have drawn the least attention within policymaking circles and among the public. Although this volume looks at New York City, the United States' largest and most prominent international center, the issues and processes discussed--the economic restructuring of the economy, immigration, and internationalization of crime, the changing demands on, and functions of, social and civic institutions, the technological innovations that are revolutionizing how we live, do business, and form communities--represent fundamental challenges faced by cities and communities across the country; particularly at a time when many of the traditional functions of the central government are being privatized or decentralized. This is a volume of intellectual rigor--briskly written and clear-headed. It provides a model that will be emulated in the analysis of other global cities.

Contents:

Robert D. The processes of their accommodation, however, differ, with local authorities and other state institutions playing an important role in these processes. Offering comprehensive empirical insights both from recent sites of immigration in Southern Europe, as well as from places of more established immigration in the north, this book examines the accommodation of migrant organizations in different cities and the factors that affect this process. It thus sheds light on the manner in which the interplay of immigration regime, national integration policy and local responses shape the differing patterns and trajectories observed in the formation and action of migrant organizations across Europe.

Margit Fauser is a researcher and lecturer in the faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, Germany.

</text>

                <text>Une usine implantée en rase campagne suffit-elle à créer une ville ? L'exemple du complexe textile de Dadja - 150 km au nord de Lomé, 1500 ouvriers en 1980, venus de tout le Togo - montre que le village a fortement grandi en surface et en population - jusqu'à 7000 habitants - , et l'habitat nettement progressé en qualité. Mais la population ouvrière ne s'est pas enracinée à Dadja : elle n'y fait que ses achats les plus quotidiens, elle cultive elle-même une bonne partie de son alimentation, elle réexpédie au village d'origine ses économies et ses investissements. Il n'y a donc accumulation sur place ni de population stable, ni de capitaux, ni de fonctions urbaines. Dadja n'est plus un village et n'est pas devenu une ville mais un troisième type d'établissement humain : un "camp". (Résumé d'auteur)</text>

                <text>C'est pour tourner les lourdes taxes douanières de l'administration coloniale anglaise que des commerçants locaux créèrent Lomé, juste au-delà de la frontière orientale de la Gold Coast, en 1880. La ville est donc dès l'origine un centre commercial majeur, dont le sol est la propriété privée de ses habitants. Par la suite, un litige entre l'Angleterre et la France à propos d'Aného empêche les antagonismes d'intervenir sur le terrain. Mais une manoeuvre intempestive des responsables de la Gold Coast provoque à Lomé l'appel à une nouvelle venue, l'Allemagne, qui crée ainsi le "protectorat" du Togo. En 1897, Lomé devient la capitale du territoire et bénéficie à partir de 1904 du seul wharf de la côte, ce qui assurera sa prépondérance définitive sur toute l'armature urbaine du Togo.
