</text>

<text>This paper deals with the inequality of access to the urban public utilities in developing countries, and more accurately with the issue of the access to the waste collection in Abidjan. This question is closely linked with the centralization, decentralization and recentralization movements that affected this service management for the last decades. Each stage of the decentralization process in Ivory Coast brought institutional changes in waste collection management in Abidjan. Each of them had specific consequences on the access of people to this service. These consequences are investigated on a local scale and are linked to the socio-economic characteristics of the studied areas. Together with the focus on the historical aspects of the problematic, a comparative analysis between two districts of opposite standing attempts to identify the key factors of such an inequity of access to the waste collection service in Abidjan. </text>

</text>

<text>This paper examines the role of expectation of two different aspects of urban ambiance (smell and sound), on people's experiences and perceptions of urban environments. It draws from two separate sensewalking studies of English cities. The first, examining expectations of odor in Doncaster, Manchester, Sheffield and London: the second, expectations of soundscapes in Manchester and London. In drawing from these investigations, sensory expectations are found highly influential in urban place experience and perception, providing different layers of meaning and understanding of place. Furthermore, perceptions of odors and sounds themselves (their detection and mental processing) are also revealed as influenced by the environmental context within which they are, or are not, detected.</text>

</text>

As a result of life cycle-related migratory movements and better family housing, the age structure of the fringe is characterised by a high number of families with children. Periurban areas are also part of a strong social gradient.
The wave pattern observed here is similar to the demographic one but there is a significant time lag between the demographic and the social waves.</text>

<text>Purpose – Through the Mediator Agents of Knowledge (MAK) analytical lens, this paper shows the role played by some of the research groups of Los Andes University in the context of metropolitan area of Bogotá. The question is: which of these groups are, could be or could become MAK? Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses the ISI-Thomson and SCOPUS citation index to classified and select Los Andes research groups more visible within international communities. Each one of the selected groups is studied and all of them are systematized in order to find regularities vis-à-vis MAK notion. Findings – One type of group acts in certain way as a mediator agent, because of the role they play, not only on the global scenario, but particularly because the role its director plays as inter-actor coordinator among institutions in Bogotá. This Glo/cal role could be partly explained by the characteristic sector where this kind of group develops its research activity: ‘mediate sector complexity' (Sorenson 2006). Practical implications – The traditional findings accepted from learning region and territorial innovation system approaches are in question on the recently knowledge economy conditions. The global scenario where the research groups develop their activity is signed recently by functionally links instead of geographical proximity. Those approaches could apply only in some kind of sectors, where nowadays, the agglomeration condition of a city and the interdisciplinary networks of knowledge still play a complementary interaction.</text>
