<text>Henri Lefebvre is undoubtedly one of the most influential thinkers in the field of urban space and its organization; his theories offer reflections still valid for analyzing social relations in urban areas affected by the crisis of the neoliberal economic system. Lefebvre’s ideal of the “right to the city” is now more widely accepted given today’s current cultural and social situation. Most current research on Henri Lefebvre refers solely to his ideas and their theoretical discussion, without focusing on the empirical transcription of the philosopher. This book fills this gap, and proposes examples about the empirical use of Henri Lefebvre’s sociology from the perspective of different cities and researchers in order to understand the city and its evolutions in the context of neoliberal globalization. The book’s main purpose is to revisit Lefebvre’s still-relevant key concepts to propose new comprehensions of the contemporary city. Case studies in this book will show also that the reception of Lefebvrian concepts differs across different contexts, depending on the social and political circumstances of each country. The debates in this book both expand the scope of urban imagination, and help to reinvigorate, unify, and empower shared desires for just urban outcomes. The contributions to this book also illuminate the everyday choices concerning the form and social processes of the city, and the inspiration that they draw from Lefebvre’s theoretical legacy in the realm of urban sociology.

<text>Government policies to promote the integration of guestworker families, and especially the second generation, have been confused in Germany by the often repeated statement that Germany is not a land of immigration. Nevertheless, since the late 1970s there has been a rapid process of family reunification creating an important ethnic minority community in the country. Whilst certain indicators of the integration of young people (for example school achievement) show improvement, the residential segregation of guestworkers remains a considerable barrier to further inter-ethnic mixing. Analysisjof residential patterns and of migration flows between urban sub -areas, shows that in Diisseldorf there has been little improvement in the living conditions and levels of segregation of guestworkers over recent years. There is evidence that they are more constrained in housing choice now than used to be the case, shown by a reduced level of intra-urban migration. It is argued that the key to future integration processes must lie in the improvement of housing opportunities for guestworker families.</text>

</text>

<text>Many villages in India seem to possess urban characteristics. The Indian definition of urban area is restrictive and excludes numerous localities. This paper consequently explores what is potentially an urban area. A literature review of various definitions of the notion of urban and urbanity enables to develop indicators susceptible to enter a multi-dimensional approach going beyond the census definitions. It suggests a palette of indicators (demographic, social, economic, spatial, infrastructural and administrative) to categorize rural and urban localities. This methodological tool is then applied to a set of eight villages around Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The study identified two types of urban areas, those under the influence of Bhopal (suburban type) and those with a large degree of autonomy (growth-centre type). The results show that even in a sub-metropolitan environment, localities are very diverse and that factors of transformation depend on multiple factors ranging from accessibility and location to situated historical capital. Finally, this working paper demonstrates that studying urbanization only within the Census classified urban local units is certainly limiting and a broader approach may help us better understand the spread of urban characteristics in India even in small settlements and micro agglomerations.</text>

<text>Shine and heat was my first impression of Dolavon, then the contrast of its canal: shadow and water where children play. An intense and pleasant contrast. The town offers the harmony shown by those places where human voracity has been somewhat curbed. It is not a perfect place, no. It is just a place where the ends have not lost sight of each other. This canal is the consequence of a long and tough learning of coexistance with the environment, wich started at the end of the 19th century when a handful of Welsh people and a Spanish storekeeper crowded together in a remote Patagonic spot. This was how, from a small mail office, a general store and a willpower that verged on stubbornness, a town would be born, Dolavon: the "Bend of the River". Providing services to travellers between the valley and the plateau provided sufficient resources and incentives to consolidate the settlement, wich would later include a smithy and a bakery. Meanwhile irrigation companies where created in the area that multiplied the results of the learning about how to sow on a territory with scarce precipitations. Through generations the valley was dyed green... and with the crops also grew its population. In this city located in the Province of Chubut, part of the Argentinian Patagonia, about 3,500 people coexist today. Old small farms were divided into lots to create Dolavon's urban zone, which responds to those actions instead of a planned layout. The railroad, that today is just a scar on the ground -by far shallower than that left by the dismantling of most of the country's railroad infrastructure in the national spirit of the Argentineans-, constituted one of its limits; the canal naturally became the axis of the urbanization. Aproximately sixty years before the first settlers arrived to Dolavon, a few hundred kilometers away from Wales, an Englishman, William Forster LLoyd, described the situation of common pasture grounds where individual incentives created disgrace for everyone involved. The idea that structures this writing is to find some parallels between that story and Dolavon's present, and to explore the options that new knowledge makes available to us to avoid that tragedy from repeating itself.</text>

<text>To analyze the response of cities to urban policies or transportation shocks, describing a succession of stationary states is not enough, and urban dynamics should be taken into account. To do so, the urban economics model NEDUM is proposed. This model reproduces the evolution of a monocentric city in continous time and captures the interaction between household moves, changes in at sizes, rent levels, and density of housing service supply. NEDUM allows, therefore, for a temporal and spatialized analysis of urban transitions. Applied to climate policies, this model suggests that the implementation of a transportation tax causes a larger welfare loss than can be inferred from traditional models. Moreover, such a tax increases signi cantly inequalities if its implementation is not anticipated enough. According to these results, therefore, smooth and early implementation paths of climate policies should be favored over delayed and aggressive action.</text>
