<text>We propose an analytical resolution of Schelling segregation model for a general class of utility functions. Using evolutionary game theory, we provide conditions under which a potential function, which characterizes the global configuration of the city and is maximized in the stationary state, exists. We use this potential function to analyze the outcome of the model for three utility functions corresponding to different degrees of preference for mixed neighborhoods. Schelling original utility function is shown to drive segregation at the expense of collective utility. If agents have a strict preference for mixed neighborhoods but still prefer being in the majority versus in the minority, the model converges to perfectly segregated configurations, which clearly diverge from the social optimum. Departing from earlier literature, these conclusions are based on analytical results. These results pave the way to the analysis of many structures of preferences, for instance those based on empirical findings concerning racial preferences. As a by-product, our analysis builds a bridge between Schelling model and the Duncan and Duncan segregation index.</text>

                <text>Depuis quelques années, nombre de villes et de régions françaises s´organisent pour accueillir des équipes de tournage de films. Afin d’aider les régisseurs des films dans leur choix de décors urbains, la ville est découpée par les responsables locaux en "morceaux choisis", présentés sur des nouveaux supports de présentation (carnets de repérage, Cd-Roms, SIG). Notre hypothèse est double : d´une part les supports de communication cinématographique à la fois créent et véhiculent une nouvelle esthétique urbaine. Celle-ci n´obéit pas aux codes esthétiques couramment admis dans les documents de communication urbaine. Il ne s´agit pas d´une esthétique de "conformité", telle que celle qui est véhiculée par les plaquettes de marketing territorial, mais d´une anti-esthétique qui exploite l´élément inédit, trouble, peu courant et semble jouer sur un registre d´hyperréalité. D´autre part, les responsables locaux ont de plus en plus tendance à exploiter et à mettre en scène cette esthétique cinématographique : ainsi, il cherchent à montrer la ville telle qu´elle a été saisie par la caméra. Le regard cinématographique apporte en effet une plus-value culturelle et médiatique à des lieux qui n´avaient pas a priori une qualité esthétique affirmée. Nous parlons de la "ville-décor" car nous estimons que les initiatives prises par les acteurs locaux pour l´accueil des tournages, consistent à transformer potentiellement la ville en décor géant. Les documents créés à cette occasion, carnets de repérages, Cédéroms ou autres, "découpent" la ville en séquences photographiques, légendées, caractérisées, commentées. Dans le contexte actuel où, grâce au cinéma, la télévision, l´internet, l’expérience de la ville devient plus virtuelle que réelle, la question de l´image et de l’esthétique urbaines créée par les médias visuels, revêt, nous semble-t-il, d´une importance nouvelle.</text>

              <elementText elementTextId="626614">
                <text>Since the beginning of the 90s, different French cities and regions have been organised to host film shooting teams. In a way to help them to choose the different film settings, the city is "cut" by the local authorities into "selected pieces", presented on different materials (Books, CD-ROMs, SIG, etc.). Our hypothesis is double : first, these materials both create and communicate a new idea of urban aesthetics, which does not obey to the classical aesthetic codes of current urban communication materials. These are not the "aesthetics of conformity" of the urban marketing brochures or materials, but "anti-aesthetics" exploiting any different, trouble, or original element. Second, local authorities tend to exploit these cinematographic aesthetics : they thus try to show the city as it has been caught by the camera. "Cinema eye" gives an added value to places which had not an a priori recognised aesthetic quality. We speak about the "city as a setting" because we thing that the different initiatives taken by the local authorities in a way to attract film shooting tend to transform the city into a gigantic setting. Material created in this occasion (brochures, books, CD-ROMs) "cut" the city into photographic sequences, which are characterised, legended, commented. In a context in which, thanks to television, cinema, internet, urban experience tends to be less and less real, and more and more virtual, the question of the creation of urban image and aesthetics by the cinema becomes extremely important.</text>

Recently, land-use regulation and collective service provision regimes have emerged within “contractual communities:” territory-based organisations (usually, but not exclusively residential) such as homeowners’ associations.

This book examines the problems and opportunities of contractual communities, avoiding both the alarmism and unwarranted apologies found in much of the literature on contractual communities.

The central notion is that cases in which coercive action by a public agency was deemed indispensable have been unjustly overstated, while the potential benefits of voluntary self-organising processes have been seriously understated. The authors propose a revised notion of the state role that allows ample leeway for contractual communities of all forms.

Grazia Brunetta is Associate Professor at the Inter-university Department of Territorial Studies and Planning (DITer), Politechnico di Torino/University degli studi di Torino.
Stefano Moroni teaches at Milan Polytechnic and is Editor of Planning Theory.

</text>

The immigrants repartition in Veneto follows the local productive system, characterized by industrial firms of small and middle size, diffused on the territory. Although this phenomenon is rather recent and limited, on the basis of some empirical observations, it is showing some aspects of stabilization. On the one hand, the peculiar pattern of the immigrants local presence avoids those problems which are typical of metropolitan areas, but on the other one, it could hinder the execution of proper policies aiming at the satisfaction of foreigners' needs.</text>

The nineteenth century began a period of strong demographic increases, which had significant repercussions on the price of property in the centre of the city. By reconstructing the property investments of the business elite, the author seeks to find out the extent to which it was responsible for the exploitation (for reasons of profit) of low-quality residential property within the city of Antwerp. </text>

                <text>To a backdrop of dizzying urbanization, French utopian thinkers of the nineteenth century set out to explore the transformative possibilities of the modern metropolis. Linking literary analyses with diverse strands of cultural and intellectual history, this study considers how the utopian vision of the city in turn came to impinge on prose writing by poets: in Saint-Simonian literature, and in texts by Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud. At points steeped in the hyperbolic rhetoric of utopian projects, these texts nonetheless wear away at the internal coherence of that rhetoric and the idealizing meanings it supports. What emerges from Greg Kerr’s analysis is a hitherto unfamiliar dimension of these writings, revealing the alertness of some of the greatest exponents of nineteenth-century poetry to the dynamic possibilities of utopian writing, and suggesting new ways to understand the evolution of poetic discourse across the century.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

With the stroke of a pen at the Potsdam Conference following the Allied victory in 1945, Breslau, the largest German city east of Berlin, became the Polish city of Wroclaw. Its more than six hundred thousand inhabitants--almost all of them ethnic Germans--were expelled and replaced by Polish settlers from all parts of prewar Poland. Uprooted examines the long-term psychological and cultural consequences of forced migration in twentieth-century Europe through the experiences of Wroclaw's Polish inhabitants.

In this pioneering work, Gregor Thum tells the story of how the city's new Polish settlers found themselves in a place that was not only unfamiliar to them but outright repellent given Wroclaw's Prussian-German appearance and the enormous scope of wartime destruction. The immediate consequences were an unstable society, an extremely high crime rate, rapid dilapidation of the building stock, and economic stagnation. This changed only after the city's authorities and a new intellectual elite provided Wroclaw with a Polish founding myth and reshaped the city's appearance to fit the postwar legend that it was an age-old Polish city. Thum also shows how the end of the Cold War and Poland's democratization triggered a public debate about Wroclaw's "amputated memory." Rediscovering the German past, Wroclaw's Poles reinvented their city for the second time since World War II.

Uprooted traces the complex historical process by which Wroclaw's new inhabitants revitalized their city and made it their own.

Gregor Thum is assistant professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh.

</text>
