In Uzbekistan, precolonial neighbourhoods, eski chahar (« old town », in Uzbek), are gradually reconstructed by authorities, attached to rebuild or to restore disappeared monuments. This process is based on economic, political or religious logics. Although the historic authenticity of sites is flouted, the inhabitants don’t question this process: the identity of places isn’t necessarly linked to the bricks of buildings. On the contrary: henceforth, the town becomes a decor and is shaped to correspond to a mythical image of Tashkent and Bukhara. The heritage process in the old city of Harar in Ethiopia, classified by Unesco in 2006, is now responding to different issues. As a tool for economic and social development and it also serves for the implementation of identity strategies and even tensions towards the development of a group and its history. As a result of these strategies, we can distinguish specific outside demarcated areas as a product of these urban policies. These outside demarcated areas are used to receive the rejected activities that arose out of the classified perimeter. This process results in the exclusion from the old town of some residents who are forced to resettle in the urban periphery. It also refers to the marginalization at the heart of the classified city of certain groups of people, stigmatized by their lifestyles, their practices or their economic activities that do not fit the new image of the historic center of Harar. L’article envisage donc de redéfinir cet objet dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, afin de poser les bases d’une reconstruction des spécificités de l’approche géographique de la consommation. French retail geography is currently undergoing a shift towards a geography of consumption. This change was initiated by English geography in the 1990s. However, the French disciplinary renewal is not yet based on a rigorous definition of the concept of consumption. A partir de l’analyse de la représentation des marges urbaines dans une métropole futuriste et imaginaire, il met en lumière la complémentarité de deux débats contemporains sur la ville et la littérature de science-fiction : la fragmentation urbaine et la dystopie. L’article interroge le basculement entre les dynamiques socio-spatiales de la ville visible dans l’œuvre et le caractère dystopique de l’espace romanesque, comme déviance négative de la production spatiale. Les stratégies de résistance mises en œuvre par le protagoniste du roman sont interprétées comme une dialectique de la déterritorialisation/reterritorialisation. This article aims at showing that a transdisciplinary analysis of the novelistic space can fuel the current debates both in critical studies and geography. Through the analysis of Impureza, we confront the representation of the urban margins in a futurist and imaginary metropolis to the concepts of splintering urbanism and dystopia. The shifting between socio-spatial dynamics and dystopian characteristics of spatial production are questioned, as a negative deviance of space. The strategies of resistance the main character develops are interpreted as a dialectic dynamics between deterritorialization/reterritorialization. Este artículo propone una lectura transdisciplinaria del espacio novelesco en Impureza. El análisis de la representación de los márgenes urbanos en una metrópoli futurista e imaginaria cuestiona cómo se complementan dos debates sobre la ciudad y la literatura de ciencia ficción: la fragmentación urbana y la distopía. Balancea entre dinámicas socio-espaciales visibles en la obra y el carácter distópico de la producción espacial, como desvío negativo del espacio.
