According to the 1986 Census, the population in Cairo has reached 10 million inhabitants. With a built-up area of about 32000 hectares, it's one of the most densely populated city in the world. The increase remains at a high level (2, a year), but is now almost natural. This new fact is due mainly to the stagnation of urban growth at national level. As a result of huge public investments in the field of urban utilities, living conditions have improved, while informal dynamics, together with a rather ancient process of overdensification, may have caused a reduction of the housing shortage. However urban expansion has been pursued at the expense of arable land, with an annual loss of 340 hectares within the agglomeration boundaries. Another major trend of the last years is the increase of vacant housing units (17% of total stock) on the one hand and of shanty dwellings on the other. The historical dimension of residential space describes the present-day situation in terms of historical forms of organisation of urban space. These forms have changed with the mode of reproduction of the labour force during the three periods of economic growth since the industrial revolution. The structural dimension refers to the organisation and functioning of the housing market, which assign a location within this differentiated urban space to the households. These two dimensions explain the correspondence between household and housing characteristics in urban space. Dans une première partie, une modélisation empirique est proposée, dans laquelle les quartiers sont caractérisés non seulement par des variables concernant le logement et la population, mais également par des variables concernant les politiques. Les résultats concernant particulièrement les quartiers d'avant-guerre sont développés. Dans une seconde partie l'étude porte sur les effets d'un changement de la structure de la population sur l'environnement résidentiel dans deux quartiers d'avant-guerre de Rotterdam. Les relations entre les changements de la structure de la population et l'implantation d'équipements publics et commerciaux sont étudiées à l'aide de données statistiques. Une enquête a été menée auprès de 750 habitants des deux quartiers, en distinguant les anciens et les nouveaux habitants, au sujet de leur insertion dans leur quartier. Les plans d'urbanisme pourraient tirer profit des modèles empiriques de mobilité résidentielle présentés dans la première partie, qui pourraient servir de base pour des systèmes experts. Depuis les travaux de Rossi dans les années cinquante, plusieurs modèles micro-analytiques ont été développés pour représenter les facteurs en jeu dans les décisions de migration. Par exemple, Brown et Moore (1970), Speare, Goldstein et Frey (1975) et plus récemment De Jong et Fawcett (1981) ont contribué à cette entreprise. Tous prétendent que leurs modèles sont susceptibles d'être opérationalisés et de réaliser ainsi une pleine capacité de prédiction. Pourtant les fondements conceptuels de ces modèles présentent toujours un certain nombre de points faibles qui exigent notre attention. On propose ici que les déplacements de la population d'un domicile à un autre à l'intérieur d'un centre urbain soient considérés comme une catégorie particulière de mouvement migratoire puisqu'ils présentent d'importantes différences par rapport aux migrations internationales et inter-régionales. Ces modèles doivent donc être ajustés et développés afin de tenir compte de ces différences. La diversité de motivation doit être reconnue comme fondamentale pour une conceptualisation adéquate de la décision de se déplacer. La migration intra-urbaine est importante à la fois comme cause et comme conséquence de l'évolution urbaine. Elle est sujette à une série de contraintes changeantes. Tout modèle microanalytique doit traiter la décision de se déplacer dans le contexte plus large des structures sociales, économiques, politiques et physiques de l'environnement. Here we describe the French population dynamics over the last century with later-life pyramids, that are, pyramids where individuals are classified according to the time left to live. These descriptions show not only the importance of the two world wars, but also for the present period, that of the ageing of the population due to the mortality decline.
