The author draws a retrospective picture of the major migratory movements in industrial Europe since the second world war. Movements of refugees and economic migrations due to the rebuilding of the European economies have marked the fifties and the sixties. However, the economic slump following upon the first oil crisis has somewhat changed the conditions of international migration towards European countries. With this change of conditions, the characteristics and the problems of this immigrant population have been transformed.</text>

                <text>Local population ageing.

In any study of the local population ageing it is necessary to apply specific measurement tools when concerned units are too small for a correct use of macro- demographical analysis. The author explains with examples why a single indicator cannot properly describe the process, not to speak of a prognosis of its future trend. In spite of the variety of cases, encouraging results were provided by a typological attempt involving several population pattern features, corresponding to successive censuses. To these features should be added the size of the population concerned the distance between this unit and the nearest well-equiped town, the character of similar neighbouring units. In his paper, the author underlines frequently the irreplaceable role of maps. </text>

Immigration from the oversea departments and territories of metropolitan France has grown continuously for nearly 30 years. Most of those immigrants come from three departments : Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion. The economic motives being the main reasons of leaving, most immigrants in metropolitan France are young and eco- nomicly active. Most of them are also women. These two characteristics favour the development of family life and lead to the establishment of a fixed community in metropolitan France. The more rapid growth of this population is the sign of the fast transformation of this work immigration into a settlement immigration. </text>

Ethnic and family factors constitute a geographical fact of prime importance, and the only social reality deeply experimenced in the context of a fast-growing urbanization. As a matter of fact, the cultural and economic community, where the new city-dweller belongs, is not limited to the city itself. It encompasses the city and villages in the same network of multilateral relations and solidarities. Some ethnic groups know how to use well-working, association-based potentialities. The existence of such an ethnico-migratory system constitutes the undeniable specificity of the African city.</text>

Authors show by means of two surveys they processed, the complexity of the relationship between gender différenciation and space use. They analyse this relationship with the mediation of role distribution in the household. Factors such as matrimonial status of household (couple or mother alone), employment status of woman (working or not working), children and urban space, seem to be far more discriminating than only gender difference between men and women. Responsibility of household activities (children and shopping) is always for women, but the strongest difference in activity participation and space use is at first between both working men and women on the one hand and non-working women on the other hand, and secondly between working men and working women.</text>

During Francoism, essentially from 1955 to 1965, public authorities tried to solve the Madrid urban growth problem by building social housing. They are very different in nature and localization. One can study their influence on the present-day social structure of the city, well known with recent factorial studies. They have a secundary role in the centre, but important in the peripheral districts, especially in the transformation of the traditional suburbs and in the formation of the great working-class crescent in the southeast. In other zones, this role is difficult to interpret, at least at the scale of the neighbourhood.</text>
