<text>Residential mobility in the French great urban centres from 1968 to 1990.

This paper concerns the evolution of residencial mobility of the citizens inside urban centers where they are living, for the last twenty years. This analysis is unfinished owing to the fact of handicaps due to the form which the recent statistical data (Census of 1990) are now available: it is not possible particularly to isolate the residential changes between communes in each urban center from those between all the French communes. Nevertheless, it appears that the residential mobility has been clearly less intense and less variing between 1982 to 1990 than during the two previous intercensal périodes, chiefly to the detriment, (?...), of the intra-communal mobility. </text>

<text>Government policies to promote the integration of guestworker families, and especially the second generation, have been confused in Germany by the often repeated statement that Germany is not a land of immigration. Nevertheless, since the late 1970s there has been a rapid process of family reunification creating an important ethnic minority community in the country. Whilst certain indicators of the integration of young people (for example school achievement) show improvement, the residential segregation of guestworkers remains a considerable barrier to further inter-ethnic mixing. Analysisjof residential patterns and of migration flows between urban sub -areas, shows that in Diisseldorf there has been little improvement in the living conditions and levels of segregation of guestworkers over recent years. There is evidence that they are more constrained in housing choice now than used to be the case, shown by a reduced level of intra-urban migration. It is argued that the key to future integration processes must lie in the improvement of housing opportunities for guestworker families.</text>

<text>Socio-demographic shifts inside Madrid peri-urban fringe.

In this century, Madrid city has seen a tremendous development, especially from 1940 to 1975. This development has provoked the forming of an internal peri- urban fringe, where nearly all the land is urbanised, more towards the periphery, an area of non-rural residences and daily commuting and still further on a fringe of secondary residences. Nearly all the territory of the Madrid Community is today enclosed inside the peri-urban area, by one or another right, while in 1975 some parts of this Community were still faced with a depopulation caused by a rural exodus.
The population growth of the peri-urban fringe is more and more mainly due to the sole deconcentration of Madrid. The active population of the Community has moved towards the tertiary sector during the last decade, including in the traditionally industrial peri-urban municipalities.</text>

<text>Economic restructuring, the gender division of labour and the spatial division of employment in the Montreal Metropolitan Area.

This article explores the impact of recent socio-economic transformations on the relationships between workplaces and residences in metropolitan Montréal. Economic restructuring in major Western cities is bringing about not only a tertiarisation and increasing polarization of the workforce between upper- and lower-level jobs but also a relocation of economic activities. These tendencies are interwoven with patterns of labour market segmentation by gender, producing a spatial division of employment along gender lines within the metropolitan area. Using 1971 and 1981 census data, we draw out three sets of relations between the geographical distribution of places of residence and that of workplaces, focusing on differences between men and women in two contrasting occupational groups, professionnals and non-specialized factory workers.</text>

A brief summary of the origins of the concept of segregation reveals how delicate it is to apply this notion to the study of the forms of social divisions of space in contemporary French towns. The article emphasizes the dangers of confusion among several distinct subjects and different levels of analysis which are implicitly linked together by the notion of segregation. The article also mentions the methodological difficulties of quantitative study of social segregation. Nevertheless, the article points out that the notion of social segregation does have certain merits, including its stress on the importance of the cultural dimension of the cleavages of social space and of the retroactive effects that spatial forms exert on mentalities and behaviour.</text>

<text>Despite half a century of regional policy and recently massive rises in unemployment levels, the basic geographical pattern of regional problems in the United Kingdom remains, albeit with modifications. However, during the 1980 s, major job losses occured not only in the north (excluding northern Scotland) and in the big industrial conurbations, as before, but also in «small town England» and all occupational types are now affected. Besides working age population continues to increase rapidly. The geography of unemployment is studied at three levels : regional level (the south of the country is generally better off but there is no clear latitudinal division); local labour markets; micro ward level. Government policies have reacted to rising unemployment in a very haphazard fashion.</text>

Changes in the past decade will be addressed in the light of demographic and social changes. Such a discussion will allow us to look at: changes in and consequences of the distribution of residential care, i.e. national profile and local examples (maps provided); planning implications; services implications; changes in and consequences of the current accessibility and utilisation of residential care. The paper concludes with an examination of the implications of these changes of the structure of residential care and the lifestyle of individual elderly people.</text>

The survey, done in Basse-Normandie in 1983-84 by the French Ministry of Education, have shown that the output of the school system for the years 1984-85 confirms the results obtained at the national level. According to a low level of training, a great proportion of young students is jobless. Temporary employment increases, such as TUC's or short probation periods. Basse-Normandie is somewhat reculias, in terms of apprenticeship, which is highly developed in the region, and also because of the great proportion of young students leaving school before achieve- ment, without enough training and without diplomas.</text>

The growth of Abidjan has brought about diversification in social strata and they are complex links between the Government and the different social groups. Until the early eighties, while favouring the creation of ground-rents, the governmental policy served the emergence of an urban bourgeoisie and, as a consequence, the boom of the high standing building sector (but also the development of shanty towns!). At present, with the economic recession and the slackening of the city growth, the authorities are helping the middle class access to property. That is why the urban landscape has found a new balance with the building of housing estates for low-income dwellers and the revitalization of traditional housing.</text>

Uses small area wards as the basic level of analysis, and relates gender segmentation to other dimensions of social structure and change, especially socio-economic structure and change, and spatial variations in family status. Finds evidence of continued sexual inequality in London's labour market, for example in pay and occupational distribution. Supports the notion of «feminisation of poverty» as old age poverty, homelessness and low family incomes are disproportionately associated with women.</text>

<text>This paper attempts to address the empirical short-comings of traditional urban models and to build on an emerging litterature in transportation planning which examines the impact of social or non-economic variables on travel behavior. The paper addresses variations in travel mode and time to work by sex and attempts to link those variations to economic variables at the household level, as do traditional models. The analyses show, however, that men and women have differences in travel patterns which cannot be explained by traditional economic variables. In two major U.S. metropolitan areas, Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston, Texas, household income could not explain differences between the sexes in transit of carpool usage or in travel time to work. While income explained some of the differences between workers of the same sex with regard to these variables, there even remained significant differences among members of the same sex that could not be explained.</text>

<text>Social Conservation and Constraint Emergence of Urban Centres in the Peasant-States of the Central Highlands.

In a continent where peasant systems are falling into decay and families swarm into nearby towns, the overcrowded Central Highlands provide us with an extraordinary example of rural stability. We are however faced with a demographic and economic situation (a density comparable with that of Asia, poor agricultural productivity, increasing soil erosion, a precarious food balance) which ought to trigger off a tendency to migrate. It is thanks to the unyielding efforts of the hill peasants that the Burundi and the Rwanda have more or less, managed to intensify their agriculture and meet their ever-growing needs. But on the other hand, the emergence and multiplication of new urban social layers, either self-employed, are strictly determined by the existence of eventual surplus food production. To be precise, the political and economic balance necessary to the survival of this original civilization, can be kept only through strict control of the usual mechanisms of social differenciation among the peasant community. Otherwise thousands of pauperized or landless peasants would be driven to the urban centres. Being isolated in the capital cities, the rulling classes have their range of action continuously limited to the one and only problem of controlling exportable agricultural products and foreign aid. In the end, they are even condemned to surrendering a lot of their privileges and means to the rural communities to guarantee the perenniality of the social and spatial order to which, due to the lack of authorized alternatives (settling in the cities) or possible alternatives Gobs and incomes outside agriculture), the population and in particular, the young peasants at school-leaving age, are to adhere. Paradoxically eventual urban growth will depend on the good-will of the peasant class and on agricultural dynamism.</text>

<text>Traditional models of urban residential structure indicate that neighbourhoods are homogeneous with respect to class. The descriptive adequacy of this model is unquestioned by contemporary geographers who assert that neighbourhoods serve the purpose of social reproduction. We argue that the growth of female labor-force participation, the fact of occupational segregation, and other recent demographic trends have important implications for the social geography of the North American city. With 1980 Census data from the Worcester, MA Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area, we demonstrate that occupational segregation is an important source of intra-neighbourhood class heterogeneity. The implications of these findings for theories of social reproduction and class-based urban politics are explored.</text>
