</text>

<text>This paper examines the fringe development of Copenhagen and its impact on the later social and political landscapes. From the beginning of the process of suburban growth, middle and upper class people preferred to locate to the north, workers were forced to go to the west. Many of the today basic structures of the suburbs were prepared during this early transformation of the fringe. Local planning initiatives and the attitudes of the local political elites maintained a high degree of social segregation between the suburbs and explain a number of present structural urban problems.</text>

Immigrant community structures have been mainly associated with the early phase of immigrant settlement. According to this model, such structures disappear in the course of the «acculturation» process. In this article, we argue that these structures exist during a different phase in immigrant settlement and that they are a response to needs that extend beyond the phase of pure «adaptation» to the host society. We attempt to support this argument through the analysis of residential stability of foreign immigrants, used as an indicator of a settling process.</text>

This article describes the evolution of the «beaux quartiers» of Paris in the XXth century. The population selected for this study is the population mentioned in the Bottin Mondain French equivalent of the American Social Register. In the 1900s', the Parisian upper class gathers in the Vlllth, XVIth (the north part of it), Vllth and XVIIth (especially in Plaine Monceau) districts. Today, the XVIth is the first district of the bourgeoisie. It is followed by the Vllth, the XVIIth and a new one, the XVth. The upper class has progressively left the Vlllth and the western part of the IXth districts, which stay nevertheless in the top group. Though the changes of the social map, the upper class stays in the west and the east of Paris is always a no upper class's land. </text>

In Angers, a medium size city of Western France, the 1975 and 1990 censuses point out a great mobility of old people (over 75 years). Now, they rather aggregate in the city inner area. As a consequence, the central district gets proportionnally more populated with younger people. These changes in the age structure arise from three main processes: in the central district real estate rehabilitation and restoration add to the sortings out of old people; in the less coveted inner area, the greater number of elderly people results from the development of retirement homes and from the local public policy of keeping elderly citizens at home. </text>

</text>

<text>A review of the scientific literature about the urban sprawl and about the urban- agriculture interactions within the urban fringe: the case of the Montreal metropolitan region, within the Northern-American context.

The article summarizes recent literature on urban-agriculture interactions in the rural-urban fringe. First, the active processes and impacts of urban sprawl are outlined and then a brief case study of metropolitan growth in the Montreal region since World War II is presented. In the following sections, the impact of urbanisation on urban fringe agriculture is more closely examined ; emphasis being put on recent research conducted in Canada and the United States. There is growing interest for the behaviour of farmers, especially their decision taking process. Some important factors at the individual farm level should be considered for they influence decisions that determine agricultural change. </text>

As a result of life cycle-related migratory movements and better family housing, the age structure of the fringe is characterised by a high number of families with children. Periurban areas are also part of a strong social gradient.
The wave pattern observed here is similar to the demographic one but there is a significant time lag between the demographic and the social waves.</text>

<text>Research is reviewed showing that the educational achievement of British school children shows marked geographical disparities, particularly between innerurban and suburban /rural areas. These disparities are linked to differences in the socioeconomic characteristics of the populations of these areas, notably social class and ethnicity, which in turn are reflected in differences in material circumstances and cultural variables. Tower Hamlets in East London is one of the most disadvantaged boroughs in England, both socioeconomically and in terms of educational achievement. The large Bangladeshi community resident in Tower Hamlets is perhaps the most deprived minority ethnie group in the country, and both they and the indigenous working class community present an enormous challenge to the education service. However a careful examination of the data on achievement reveals that the Bangladeshi pupils are achieving better than would be expected given the disadvantages they suffer. Nonetheless principles of equal opportunity require that the education service respond more adequately to the particular needs of these children. This case study demonstrates the importance of examining processes and relationships specific to each locality.</text>

The French Guiana which is traditionally open to immigration, is made up of a medley of different communities, the largest of which is the Haitian community which has been settling there from 1974 onwards. This sizeable migration which was spontaneous and illicit, now plays a basic role, not only demographically but also through its impact on the economic system. Nevertheless it has involved tense, even sometimes hostile relations with the natives. For the last few years a process of assimilation seems to have started in connection with the three following parameters: the decrease of the migratory flow, from 1984 onwards, the stabilization of the Haitian community and the evolution of the Guianese situation as well. </text>

The author proposes to use the intra-urban residential mobility as an indicator of the internal dynamics of cities. He describes very meticulousnessly the evolution of residential behaviour in a middle town, Le Havre, between the four last French censuses. The decomposition of flows and the observation of their links with the change of urban surroundings allow to differentiate the space, using an own methodology which combines the stages of life cycle, the evolution of the household structure and the permanences and changes of the «town places». </text>

<text>The population development at the county level between 1970 and 1987 demonstrates convincingly the influence of suburbanization on spatial population shifts. The central cities in the metropolitan areas had the greatest population losses, whereas the counties in their environs registered gains of almost 50 % in some cases. These population changes originating in intraregional migration lose their dynamism in the 1980s, particularly in metropolitan areas with unfavorable economic structures.
This paper shows at the county level for the Federal republic of Germany as a whole and especially for the example of the metropolitan area of Hamburg that the suburbanization process continued to spread and thus affected communes lying farther from the central cities and that it caused progressive spatial segregation within the agglomerations according to demographic and social characteristics.</text>

<text>Based on data of life expectancy at birth in Hungary, the paper analyses the spatial stability of higher male surmortality in villages than in towns or in Budapest. (In 1987, Hungarian men lived 9,909 years less than women in villages, 7,55 years less in towns or 7,06 years less in Budapest). The paper examines :
1 .	To what extent can high male mortality alone "explain" male surmortality in urban and in rural areas (or: does the geographical pattern of male mortality differ from that of male surmortality?);
2.	How is male surmortality in large cities affected by their regional location?
3.	Is there an "optimal" settlement size group considering male and female mortality both individually and jointly?</text>
