This study presents the pattern of the residential stabilization of North African people in France studied from the results of a qualitative survey lead among Moroccans and Algerian Kabyles living in the Dauphiné. Major mutations appear in the relationships between the two refered communities.
The Kabyles renounce to return migration except to spend their «old age» in the birth country while keeping the possibility of coming back to France regularly. This evolution shows the failure of the return migration projects which are transformed into a fixation by home ownership in workers' accomodations.
The Moroccan project combines housing and/or trade investments in Morocco and a tendency to improve their settling in France by buying properties. Customs and the marking of their housing show a double positioning in which French and Moroccan cultures are mixed.</text>

<text>This paper is about the relationship between income and spatial concentration in Dutch cities, with a special focus on low incomes. After defining poverty, the principal low-income groups in the Netherlands are described briefly. We then focus on spatial segregation and concentration of some of these low-income groups. One of the main conclusions is that the relationship between income on the one hand and housing situation, segregation and concentration on the other hand is less strong in the Netherlands than might be expected from existing theoretical notions. The mismatch of housing costs and income is one of the principal explaining factors: because the Dutch social rental sector is huge, the types of households that occupy this sector are highly diverse. Consequently, also the spatial segregation between immigrants and nationals in urban areas is relatively low. This residential mix does however not mean that there are no problems between population groups within specific neighbourhoods. For the future, it is expected that segregation will increase, mainly as a consequence of changing housing policies in the Netherlands.</text>

Through the case of the Shandong Province, this study aims at developing a critical analysis of some classic models concerning Chinese population geography. Some maps, based on the ratio rural densities/cultivated areas, show Shandong as being a significantly anomalous province, with respect to the usual contrast between overpopulated plains and unpeopled uplands, as P. Gourou has definited it. The notion of saturation of cultivated areas, as well as that of overpopulation, more generally, the neo-malthusian principle, are thrown back into question. Lastly, it appears that local development level is only slightly determined by demographic pression.</text>

<text>Labour Market Incorporation of Young Migrants and Young People from a Foreign Origin.

One of the multiple aims of the MGIS survey was to enable the study of how young immigrants and young people born in France from foreign parents enter the labour force market.
At the time of the survey, most young people were in active employment. A difference was observed between immigrants or «foreign origin» young people with Spanish or Portuguese origins and those of Algerian origin, the latter groups being less often actively employed than the former. This was the case for both men and women. Educational qualifications only explained part of these differences. Generally, the family is called upon for help in job-seeking. This is particularly so for Portuguese immigrants and the young people from Spanish or Portuguese origin without qualification. Young Algerian immigrants or young people born in France from at least one Algerian parent occupy a disadvantaged position, whether one is looking at the first employment status after completion of education, the succession of various statuses throughout their occupational histories or the length of the period separating the completion of studies and begining of the first employment or present employment. These results may be considered as ample proof of the genuine difficulties encountered by these young people on entering the labour market. The results also suggest that the aspirations of this group are higher.</text>

Migration flows for the total population have been the subject of a great number of studies. Migration flows relating to foreigners within national borders, on the other hand, have not been widely examined. And yet we can legitimately ask what the role of such migration flows is on the distribution of foreigners within the country. After a brief analysis of the mobility rates between census years for the main nationality groupings, we present an analytical method which shows that, as far as the regions in the south of France are concerned, migration flows have had a minimal effect on the fall in numbers of foreigners and immigrants registered over the last few years.</text>

<text>State Violence as an Adjustment Type of Urban Growth : the Case of Khartoum (Sudan).

The population of khartoum, national capital of the Sudan, trebled during the past 20 years. Its conurbation entails now over 4.5 million inhabitants. Its suburbs have been overflo- oded by the influx of migrants from all the country, victims of drought, hunger and civil wars. The military-islamist regime that took over in june 1989 has launched a policy of authoritarian controll of these flows, within the frame of a new city planning. Under the disguise of public hygiena and the protection of the urban character of the town, this policy is based on the seclusion and expelling of migrants that are neither Muslims nor Arabized, originating from the South. On the other side, in order to reduce the chocking of the city-center, a policy of administrative and social délocalisation is set at the level of the urban district. The other projects dealing with the improvement of infrastructures, and the foundation of satellite-cities with the aim of absorbing the rural influx of migrants close to industrial areas at some distance of Khartoum, are at a standstill, due to the lack of finance. Altogether, the politics of the Sudanese State toward Khartoum does not entail any proper islamic dimension; it expresses mostly security concerns, and a view of the urban fabric opposite to its role of a human and cultural melting pot of the Nation.</text>

In spite of the existence in Paris of several other neighbourhoods with significant Jewish populations, the neighbourhood of the «rue des Rosiers» is «the Jewish quarter» of the city. This is essentially due to three factors of which memory is intimately a part : the long history of the Jewish presence in this area which dates back to the middle ages, the role of attraction pole for Jews of all cultures, national origins and degrees of orthodoxy who, at the same time or in successive waves, pass through this neighbourhood, and the fact that this neighbourhood has become a symbol because each wave of immigrants and each successive generation renew their links with the past through the celebration of Jewish festivals, the recollection of the history of the various institutions -synagogues, schools, shops - and events which have marked the neighbourhood, and finally, by the transmission of individual memories evoked often by odors, tastes, sounds and which join with the collective unconsciousness to leave a lasting impression on the neighbourhood as a whole.</text>

Indian cities express both the invariants of universal urbanity and hindu cultural specificity. In India, as in any Third World city, urban socio-spatial organization shows disparities and socio-economic criteria seem to abolish traditional determinants. Nevertheless, the caste, prohibited in the country since 1950, has still got a role in cities' spatial pattern even though new areas are less caste homogeneous. Specific examples will point out the combination of cultural traditions and economic dynamics.</text>

In the French urban peripheries, about a thousand districts said «disadvantaged» or «sensitive» are registered, in which are concentrated the most serious social difficulties, particularly unemployment and deliquency. The urban violence (defined as the whole attacks against institutions and officers that are representative of the State and the various authorities) is being significantly developed since the early 1990s. From original sources of the ministère de l'Intérieur (the French «Home Office»), the author attempts to delimit this phenomenon of anti-institutional violence, to understand its level, its forms and its evolution, and to find its geographical distribution in France. A strong but non exclusive relationship is seen between drug and violence demonstrations.</text>

A recent research used data available in the 1989 French Education Longitudinal Study to investigate differences in school performance and school trajectories between foreign children, immigrants' children, children born in France from parents born abroad and other pupils. In this research, eight criteria were used to approach the population under focus : nationality (2 or 7 categories), birth place, number of schooling years outside France, language spoken at home, membership group of the pupil and number of foreign attributes. The paper presents the general methodology of the research, establishes systematic comparisons between criteria in order to evaluate their pertinence for sociology of education and summarizes the main results of the research.</text>

<text>The HIV Spatial Diffusion in Bombay.

India seems to be one of the most infected states by the Human Immunodeficiency Vi rus (HIV) inside Asia. However, the government serological data reveal a problem of under-report. To overcome this lack of information, a sample has been collected in one of the most contaminated cities of the country : Bombay. The data study at different scales reflects disparities of HIV spread in the different areas of the metropolis. «Pathogenic» places for decades have first been infected. Moreover the intra-urban analysis of one of the red-light areas (Kamathipura) reveals a contamination of the population linked with accessibility as well as cultural factors. In view of this infection, the extremist Hindu government of the State has used segregative actions against infected people which might create important tensions in the future.</text>

                <text>Demographic Transition in India.

India was the first country to adopt a restrictive population policy but fertility remained for a long time at a high level. The total fertility rate is now a little bit higher than 3 children per woman, which is the fertility world average. The decline of the fertility affects all the states but sometimes important regional disparities remain between North and South of India. In Kerala the number of children per woman is less than 2 and in Uttar Pradesh close to 5. These contrasts between states are largely related to the level of alphabetisation of women.</text>

<text>Turcs in Cheratte: Spatial Concetration and Social Integration Strategies in an Industrial Suburb of Liège (Belgium).

This article evaluates the level of socio-economic integration of the Turkish population living in a mining-village close to the city of Liège (Belgium). It makes use of the results from the most recent population census as well as specific surveys. It is found that, contrary to accepted ideas that see the Turkish community as being hermetically sealed against integration, such a process is actually in operation amongts the Turks of Cheratte. The variables considered include demographic structure and evolution, employment and unemployment, household income and expenditure, education and knowledge of French, residential mobility, housing conditions, and psycho-social indicators. The evolution of these variables shows the willingness of the respondents to accommodate themselves to the socio-cultural norms of the host society. However, the principal limits to the integration model for this population relate to unemployment and household debt.</text>

<text>This paper examines the consequences of geographical mobility on family structures and nuptiality, and more specifically on endogamy, through a comparison of heads of households who migrated and of those who never left their native village. Slight differences are observed, but for those who migrated, neither the traditional model of family nor nuptiality are influenced by migration.
For the second generation, things are more complex. Children of migrants spending their holidays in the village are different from those born to migrants who definitively returned to Portugal, who in turn tend to be close to those born to non migrants. As shown by data on education, citizenship, place of residence, children living abroad seem to wish to integrate into the host country, but this does not imply a rejection of their country of origin, as proved by the frequency of visits to the villages.</text>

<text>Profile of the Users of the Different Modern Health Care Services in the Central Benin.

According to which criteria do the Benineses choose among the rather diversified modern health care services now available ? This hypothesis was checked by studying over a two-years-period the structure, by sex, age, type of disease and place of origin, of the users of all the modern health care services (public, private and church supported) from the Ouessè district (Central Benin). It was found out that, the weaker the perceived therapeutical efficiency, the more numerous are the children and adult male users, the smaller the attraction area and the narrower the range of treated diseases with in parallel a strong increase in paludism cases.</text>
