<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> <br /> For most of the latter half of the twentieth century, Roppongi was an enormously popular nightclub district that stood out from the other pleasure quarters of Tokyo for its mix of international entertainment and people. It was where Japanese and foreigners went to meet and play. With the crash of Japan’s bubble economy in the 1990s, however, the neighborhood declined, and it now has a reputation as perhaps Tokyo’s most dangerous district—a hotbed of illegal narcotics, prostitution, and other crimes. Its concentration of “bad foreigners,” many from China, Russia and Eastern Europe, West Africa, and Southeast Asia is thought to be the source of the trouble.<br /> <br /> Roman Adrian Cybriwsky examines how Roppongi’s nighttime economy is now under siege by both heavy-handed police action and the conservative Japanese “construction state,” an alliance of large private builders and political interests with broad discretion to redevelop Tokyo. The construction state sees an opportunity to turn prime real estate into high-end residential and retail projects that will “clean up” the area and make Tokyo more competitive with Shanghai and other rising business centers in Asia.<br /> <br /> Roppongi Crossing is a revealing ethnography of what is arguably the most dynamic district in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Based on extensive fieldwork, it looks at the interplay between the neighborhood’s nighttime rhythms; its emerging daytime economy of office towers and shopping malls; Japan’s ongoing internationalization and changing ethnic mix; and Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown, the massive new construction projects now looming over the old playground.</div> </div> <b>Roman Adrian Cybriwsky </b>is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies and Director of Asian Studies at Temple University.</div> </div>

This volume illuminates the production of ideologies as both discursive and spatial phenomena in distinct contributions that ground their analysis in cities of the Global North and South. From Sydney to Singapore, Hong Kong to Hanoi, Las Vegas to Macau, conventional public spaces are in decline as sites of ideological dissent. Instead, we are witnessing the colonisation of urban space by market globalism (today’s dominant global ideology) and securitised surveillance regimes. Against this backdrop, how should we interpret the proliferation of metaphors that claim to communicate the essence of global transformation? In what ways do space and language work together to normalise the truth claims of powerful ideological players? <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Vico and Naples is an intellectual portrait of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) that reveals the politics and motivations of one of Europe’s first scientists of society. According to the commonplaces of the literature on the Neapolitan, Vico was a solitary figure who, at a remove from the political life of his larger community, steeped himself in the recondite debates of classical scholarship to produce his magnum opus, the New Science. Barbara Ann Naddeo shows, however, that at the outset of his career Vico was deeply engaged in the often-tumultuous life of his great city and that his experiences of civic crises shaped his inquiry into the origins and development of human society.<br /> <br /> With its attention to Vico’s historical, rhetorical, and jurisprudential texts, this book recovers a Vico who was keenly attuned to the social changes transforming the political culture of his native city. Sentient City explores the experience of living in a city that can remember, correlate, and anticipate. Five teams of architects, artists, and technologists imagine a variety of future interactions that take place as computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets, and public spaces of the city.<br /> <br /> "Too Smart City" employs city furniture as enforcers: a bench ejects a sitter who sits too long, a sign displays the latest legal codes and warns passersby against transgression, and a trashcan throws back the wrong kind of trash. Lomé au regard d'Accra<br /> <br /> <b>Présentation par l'éditeur :</b><br /> <br /> Les migrants originaires de l’espace de libre circulation de la CEDEAO (Communauté Économique des États d’Afrique de l’Ouest) sont nombreux à Lomé et Accra. Pourtant, ces migrants dispersés dans leur ville d’accueil plutôt que rassemblés dans des quartiers ethniques, restent peu visibles. Il s’agit donc d’interroger la visibilité des identifications étrangères à la ville, pour les citadins comme aux yeux du chercheur.<br /> <br /> La figure de l’étranger dans les villes d’Afrique de l’Ouest est complexe car objet d’instrumentalisation. Les étrangers n’appartiennent pas à un seul groupe social, pas plus qu’à un seul territoire. La prise de possession et le contrôle de certains lieux sont au coeur de dynamiques syncrétiques caractérisées par la redéfinition d’appartenances à l’ailleurs dans des interactions locales. Autrement dit, le maintien d’identités étrangères à la ville ne repose pas sur la réplique d’identités qui apparaissent ailleurs ou dans d’autres temps mais résulte d’une différenciation et d’une création identitaire dans et de la ville.<br /> <br /> Refusant le paradigme de l’assimilation, cet ouvrage propose une approche dialectique et multiscalaire des liens entre étrangers et villes : la ville modifie les identifications des migrants étrangers qui, eux-mêmes, transforment l’urbanité et la citadinité, définie comme les manières d’être propres à une ville (en termes de pratiques et de représentations).<br /> <br /> À partir d’une investigation approfondie dans deux capitales d’Afrique de l’Ouest, ce livre permet de reconsidérer la place de l’étranger dans les dynamiques urbaines contemporaines, en montrant qu’il s’agit d’une posture citadine essentielle dans l’invention des liens qui font la ville au quotidien.<br /> <br /> <b>Amandine Spire</b>, agrégée en géographie et docteure de l’Université de Paris Ouest-Nanterre, enseigne actuellement en tant qu’attaché temporaire à l’université de Paris-Sorbonne.</div> </div>

Quels sont les contours du concept de proximité ? Comment différentes disciplines le définissent-ils ? En quoi peut-il être un instrument pour la compréhension de phénomènes sociaux tels que la ville ? Est-il pertinent pour analyser un travail d'enquête sur le terrain ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions abordées dans cet ouvrage. Au fil des contributions, tant théoriques qu'empiriques ou méthodologiques, se déploient les potentialités d'un concept qui éclaire la complexité urbaine, mais aussi les enjeux et les richesses d'une démarche interdisciplinaire.<br />
Cet ouvrage est le fruit d'un séminaire qui s'est tenu au sein de l'Institut de recherches interdisciplinaires sur Bruxelles (IRIB) des Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis.<br />

La complexité culturelle constitue une tentative de parvenir à la compréhension de la culture par une voie consistant à ouvrir le concept, à le rendre processuel et flexible en terme d’échelle plutôt que statique ; et à tenir les barrières culturelles pour relatives, problématiques et, par conséquent, objets d’investigation plutôt qu’absolues et simplement déjà données. Ulf Hannerz propose ici des outils conceptuels et méthodologiques pour une approche anthropologique de la complexité culturelle contemporaine, plus précisément pour une macro-anthropologie d’inspiration interactionniste attentive autant au flux culturel mondial et à ses implications sur les processus de significations qu’à la culturalité d’interactions socialement situées.</div>

Loin de s’en tenir à l’image récurrente de l’individu seul face à la mondialisation de la culture, <i>La complexité culturelle</i> accorde une large place aux approches des cadres de distribution culturelle (formes de vie, Etats, marchés, mouvements), à des aperçus d’économie politique de la culture qui soulignent les contraintes canalisant un flux loin d’être libre, à l’exploration des lignes de tension entre sens commun, connaissances spécialisées et discours critique. Des analyses de dynamiques micro-culturelles éclairent le rôle particulier des villes comme centres de production culturelle. Une conception distributive de la culture, socialement ancrée, oriente l’ensemble de ces considérations que la seconde partie de l’ouvrage met en oeuvre en procédant à l’étude de cas de laboratoires urbains de production culturelle (Vienne, Calcutta, San Fancisco à certains moments de leur histoire), ainsi qu’à l’étude de formes contemporaines de créolisation culturelle dans le contexte des interactions mondiales.</div>

Challenging the conventional wisdom that New York City's renaissance started in the 1990s, Osman locates the origins of gentrification in Brooklyn in the cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. Gentrification began as a grassroots movement led by young and idealistic white college graduates searching for "authenticity" and life outside the burgeoning suburbs. By the end of the twentieth century, decaying inner cities in America continued to lose ground despite the best efforts of local and federal officials. By then the investment in urban revitalization begun during the activist 1960s had become a romantic memory. Roger Biles’s insightful new book shows why. The first major comprehensive treatment of the subject in thirty-five years, superseding Mark Gelfand’s landmark A Nation of Cities, it examines the federal government’s relationship with urban America from the Truman through the Clinton administrations.<br />

Deftly analyzing the efforts of presidents, legislators, and other policy makers to deal with a range of troubling and persistent urban issues—especially problems related to housing, transportation, and poverty—Biles chronicles the attitudes and policy proposals of each president and his chief appointees. He shows that, although various presidents announced initiatives to benefit cities, only Jimmy Carter actually made a sustained effort to do so, while the Eisenhower administration stepped back from New Deal–Fair Deal engagement in urban affairs and LBJ’s Great Society programs succeeded in reviving ailing cities—until money was diverted to the Vietnam war. In recent years there has been a growing focus on urban and environmental studies, and the skills and techniques needed to address the wider challenges of how to create sustainable communities. Central to that demand is the increasing urgency of addressing the issue of urban decline, and the response has almost always been to pursue growth policies to attempt to reverse that decline. The track record of growth policies has been mixed at best.<br />
<br />
Until the first decade of the twenty-first century decline was assumed to be an issue only for former industrial cities – the so-called Rust Belt. But the sudden reversal in growth in the major cities of the American Sunbelt has shown that urban decline can be a much wider issue. Justin Hollander’s research into urban decline in both the Sun and Rust Belts draws lessons planners and policy makers that can be applied universally.<br />
<br />
Hollander addresses the reasons and statistics behind these "shrinking cities" with a positive outlook, arguing that growth for growth’s sake is not beneficial for communities, suggesting instead that urban development could be achieved through shrinkage. Case studies on Phoenix, Flint, Orlando and Fresno support the argument, and Hollander delves into the numbers, literature and individual lives affected and how they have changed in response to the declining regions.<br />

Written for urban scholars and to suit a wide range of courses focused on contemporary urban studies, this text forms a base for all study on shrinking cities for professionals, academics and students in urban design, planning, public administration and sociology.</div>

Unprecedented crime rates have made Guatemala City one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Following a peace process that ended Central America’s longest and bloodiest civil war and impelled the transition from a state-centric economy to the global free market, Guatemala’s neoliberal moment is now strikingly evident in the practices and politics of security. Postwar violence has not prompted public debates about the conditions that permit transnational gangs, drug cartels, and organized crime to thrive. Instead, the dominant reaction to crime has been the cultural promulgation of fear and the privatization of what would otherwise be the state’s responsibility to secure the city. This collection of essays, the first comparative study of urban Guatemala, explores these neoliberal efforts at security. Contributing to the anthropology of space and urban studies, this book brings together anthropologists and historians to examine how postwar violence and responses to it are reconfiguring urban space, transforming the relationship between city and country, and exacerbating deeply rooted structures of inequality and ethnic discrimination.</div>
