It also offers an excellent overview of the history of social mobilization in Argentina. Gabriela Ippolito-O’Donnell’s main assertion in this study is that through various channels of collective action and associational activities, as well as by voting, the urban popular sector is a fundamental actor in the pursuit of the expansion and consolidation of citizenship rights.

Using both qualitative analysis and quantitative data, Ippolito-O’Donnell explores what factors—economic, politico-institutional, organizational, and subjective—account for the emergence in the 1980s, and collapse in the 1990s, of a wave of grassroots popular organizations in Villa Lugano, a poor neighborhood located in the south of Buenos Aires. She identifies factors crucial for explaining the organizational weakness and concomitant cyclical patterns of collective action by the urban poor, as well as the consequences for alleviating poverty and inequality in this newly democratized nation.

Gabriela Ippolito-O’Donnell is professor in the School of Politics and Government at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín in Argentina.

</text>

Where is the focus? How do the various government tiers and regulating bodies interact, and how do decisions ripple across Europe?

In the first section of the book, social housing in different welfare systems (United Kingdom, Germany,Finland, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands, France) is analysed. The second part addresses this issue from a transnational and multidisciplinary perspective to cast light on the question of whether such a thing as a European social housing model indeed exists. The third probes whether the notion of a 'French model' is actually relevant, putting the spotlight on each of the various facets of France's public policy in the social-housing realm in turn.

Noémie Houard is Chargée de mission at the Centre d'analyse stratégique/Premier ministre, France.
Jean-Claude Driant is a Professor at the Institute d'Urbanisme de Paris (Université Paris-Est Crétail Val-de-Marne).
Laurent Ghekiere is head of the European Union office, Brussels, of Union sociale pour l'habitat.
Peter Malpass is Professor of Housing Policy at the University of the West of England.

</text>

The variety of urban outcomes in contemporary globalization is explored through detailed case studies.

Edited by leading scholars of the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Research Network and written by over 60 experts in the field, the Handbook is a unique resource for students, researchers and academics in urban and globalization studies as well as for city professionals in planning and policy.

Ben Derudder is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Ghent and Associate Director of the Globalization and World Cities research network.
Michael Hoyler is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Loughborough University and the Associate Director of GaWC.
Peter J.                 <text>

– d’une part, la déconcentration des minorités des inner cities vers les quartiers plus aisés est une conséquence de l’ascension sociale puissante d’un grand nombre de ménages ;

This volume provides detailed case studies from the three best-known cities from Roman Italy, revealing how movement contributes to our understanding of the ways different elements of society interacted in space, and how the movement of people and materials shaped urban development.

The chapters in this book examine the impressions left by the movement of people and vehicles as indentations in the archaeological and historical record, and as impressions upon the Roman urban consciousness. Through a broad range of historical issues, this volume studies movement as it is found at the city gate, in public squares and on the street, and as it is represented in texts. Its broad objective is to make movement meaningful for understanding the economic, cultural, political, religious, and infrastructural behaviours that produced different types and rhythms of interaction in the Roman city.

This volume's interdisciplinary approach will inform the understanding of the city in classics, ancient history, archaeology, and architectural history, as well as cultural studies, town planning, urban geography, and sociology.

Ray Laurence is Professor of Roman History and Archaeology at the University of Kent

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher:

At 1:27 on the morning of August 4, 2005, Herbert Manes fatally stabbed Robert Monroe, known as Shorty, in a dispute over five dollars. It was a horrific yet mundane incident for the poor, heavily African American neighborhood of North Philadelphia—one of seven homicides to occur in the city that day and yet not make the major newspapers. For Michael B. Katz, an urban historian and a juror on the murder trial, the story of Manes and Shorty exemplified the marginalization, social isolation, and indifference that plague American cities.

Introduced by the gripping narrative of this murder and its circumstances, Why Don't American Cities Burn? charts the emergence of the urban forms that underlie such events. Katz traces the collision of urban transformation with the rightward-moving social politics of late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century America. He shows how the bifurcation of black social structures produced a new African American inequality and traces the shift from images of a pathological black "underclass" to praise of the entrepreneurial poor who take advantage of new technologies of poverty work to find the beginning of the path to the middle class. He explores the reasons American cities since the early 1970s have remained relatively free of collective violence while black men in bleak inner-city neighborhoods have turned their rage inward on one another rather than on the agents and symbols of a culture and political economy that exclude them.

The book ends with a meditation on how the political left and right have come to believe that urban transformation is inevitably one of failure and decline abetted by the response of government to deindustrialization, poverty, and race. How, Katz asks, can we construct a new narrative that acknowledges the dark side of urban history even as it demonstrates the capacity of government to address the problems of cities and their residents? How can we create a politics of modest hope?

Michael B. Katz is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania.

</text>

By combining provocative prose with photo-essay, Time and the Suburbs explores the disappearance of cities in North America under the weight of suburban, exurban, and other forms of development that are changing the way we live and do politics. Drawing on social theory from Henri Lefebvre and Guy Debord to Antonio Negri, this book reconceptualizes the tasks facing activists and social movements. This is both a provocative essay and introduction to important social theory for anyone interested in cites and urban development.
