Il s'agit enfin de l'incompréhension jamais dépassée entre architectes et usagers de ce lieu. On ne peut prendre pleinement la mesure de ce triple échec qu'en rappelant l'ambition démesurée de ce projet de quelques 400 000 m2, tant dans le domaine scientifique que sur le plan institutionnel, aussi bien en termes d'architecture publique que de programmation artistique. Dès lors, les solutions proposées depuis plus de trente ans pour l'aménagement du site sont envisagées non seulement comme autant de projets architecturaux visant remédier au caractère foncièrement inesthétique d'un bâtiment inachevé, mais aussi et surtout comme une série de solutions imaginées pour rendre possible une véritable vie universitaire sur le campus, ambition qui va bien au-delà de l'accroissement de la surface bâtie disponible. La crise de l'amiante, après 1996, marque le début de la rénovation du site, en même temps qu'est choisie une solution radicale : la dissociation des deux universités auparavant étroitement imbriquées, et le départ de l'une d'entre elles vers un autre lieu.<br />Bâtiment exceptionnel par son histoire, le campus de Jussieu est également emblématique des difficultés récurrentes de l'architecture universitaire dans notre pays. While the arrival of full generations of baby-boomers signals a demographic ageing and a sharp increase in the number of elderly people throughout France, the Nord - Pas-de-Calais is characterised by a very slow increase in elderly people, both proportionally and numerically. This absence of ageing is the result, on the one hand, of the demographic behaviour of local populations, marked by relatively high birth and mortality rates, and, on the other hand, a powerful emigration process which progressively shattered the baby-boom generations. In mining towns, and especially in mining districts, the beneficiaries of the coal-mining industry represent a significant and dramatically ageing population, whose average age is 77. Over the course of the next two decades, the death of theses miners and miners’ widows will entail a powerful rejuvenation and demographic renewal process. The mining habitations will be vacated owing to the death of their tenants. These often unattractive habitations, which are stigmatised in the urban landscape, now attract the underprivileged. Le cas sud-africain offre ainsi au géographe un premier sujet de réflexion, par sa singularité. Il pose ainsi plusieurs questions fondamentales pour notre discipline, et notamment celle de la ségrégation. Ce phénomène pose le problème des relations entre espace et société : distance sociale et distance spatiale ont des rapports éminemment complexes et sont corrélés de façon très variable dans la réalité urbaine3 . Incontestablement, la spécificité du cas sud-africain se dilue et s'efface depuis la fin de l'apartheid et les premières élections démocratiques d'avril 1994. Les dynamiques socio-spatiales rejoignent des cadres plus connus de l'évolution urbaine, dans un contexte de mondialisation et de métropolisation. Mais les formes de la ségrégation évoluent, les pratiques de la ville aussi, et posent conjointement la question de l'urbanité et de la citadinité. C'est ce dernier aspect que j'explorerai ici, pour tenter d'analyser en quoi les villes sud-africaines actuelles et leur évolution post-apartheid éclairent le problème de la ségrégation. Je m'appuierai sur l'exemple de la ville de Cape Town. Alors que le monde ne cesse de s'urbaniser, la ville semble s'éloigner de son idéal et de sa fonction de Cité : les processus de fragmentation et de ségrégation de l'espace urbain, les violences dont il est parfois le théâtre remettent en cause la mixité sociale, les rencontres imprévues, bref, l'urbanité telle qu'elle a été très largement analysée depuis Eugen Wirth et Max Weber. C'est dans ce cadre général que les chercheurs ont attiré l'attention sur l'espace public. Ces réflexions sont très largement interdisciplinaires puisque philosophie, sociologie et science politique y ont joué un rôle moteur. Complémentaire des précédentes, la démarche géographique permet de resituer les espaces en question dans un contexte urbain concret : loin d'être métaphorique, l'espace public des géographes est un lieu précis, avec des configurations spatiales particulières, une histoire, une appropriation par les différents groupes sociaux en présence, un mode d'intégration dans la ville. Cependant, les travaux de recherche se sont largement limités aux espaces publics des sociétés occidentales (Europe et Etats-Unis) pour y souligner des phénomènes de violence, de communautarisation, de privatisation. Nous proposons de compléter ce tableau par l'étude des espaces publics dans des pays dits " intermédiaires ", ni très riches, ni très pauvres, et ayant des niveaux de développement industriel et tertiaire non négligeable : le fonctionnement même des espaces publics et leur évolution divergent en partie de ce qui a été observé ailleurs. Les villes des pays intermédiaires et leur espaces publics sont le théâtre de tensions spécifiques : arrivée relativement récente de populations d'origine rurale, clivages culturels, sociaux, économiques voire " raciaux "... Nous choisirons également des pays hors de la sphère proprement occidentale pour confronter la thématique des espaces publics à des villes de tradition et de modèle différents. Our empirical evidence suggests that these public spaces involve much more than just consumption patterns, as they sustain and support novel ways of asserting social identities in a new political situation. These changes are, however, quite complex and fraught with ambivalence. Consequently, we scrutinize how race is staged in that space, and how racial diversity produces various kinds of boundaries. We then argue that these urban practices lead us to an understanding of the precarious balance between private and public spaces. We propose the notion of `publicization' -- the process whereby private spaces acquire a more public dimension. Cet article montre comment les structures familiales, l´agencement intérieur des habitations ou le réseau associatif ont transformé ces espaces. The presence of Black people in South African cities has long been severely limited and controlled by the segregation and apartheid regimes. The spaces they were allocated were designed for those purposes. Nevertheless, new social forms and an original and dynamic urban culture are today thriving in the same spaces. This paper shows how family structures, internal organisation of houses, and the networks of associations achieved these transformations. The analysis of mental maps also confirms the fact that space in Black neighbourhoods is most significantly a projection of social relations and networks.
