Non-voyants, mal-voyants, mieux-voyants - Jean-Paul Barbe

Urban Studies was first published in 1964 to provide an international forum of social and economic contributions to the fields of urban and regional planning. Since then, the Journal has expanded to encompass the increasing range of disciplines and approaches that have been brought to bear on urban and regional problems. Contents include original articles, notes and comments, and a comprehensive book review section. Regular contributions are drawn from the fields of economics, planning, political science, statistics, geography, sociology, population studies and public administration. The Journal also publishes the occasional ‘state of the art’ article, consisting of an analytical review of the major strands of contemporary thinking in a given topic area, supported by an extended bibliography of the topic. All articles are peer-reviewed.

Urban Studies deals with every kind of urban and regional problem that is susceptible to social science or other relevant analysis. These range from such problems as urban housing, employment, race, politics and crime, to problems of regional investment and transport. Although most articles published deal with problems located in the advanced industrial societies of Europe and the Americas, important articles dealing with these problems in Asia, the Third World and in Eastern Europe are also published regularly.

Mega-projects are at the core of contemporary Arab town planning, and the papers in this issue of Built Environment illustrate the primacy of the urban project in the planning of large cities in the Arab World over the last twenty years.

That said, is there an 'Arab' way of creating big projects? Can we highlight Arab specifi cities in the manner of implementation of such urban actions, or indeed within the eight countries – Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon and Syria – discussed by the contributors to this issue?

Urban Research & Practice, published in association with EURA (European Urban Research Association), focuses on urban policy. The journal includes papers that:

* provide a systematic description of :
- urban issues
- urban developments
- urban policies or
- urban policy-making and policy implementation
* seek to explain variations in urban policies or urban governance cross-sectorally or cross-nationally or that seek to explain such variations over time
* analyse and/or evaluate the effects of urban policies or process of urban governance
* analyse European-wide factors that impact on urban areas, urban policies and urban governance

As well as traditional academic papers, the journal includes a policy section, a project report section and book reviews. The policy section focuses on new policies launched at the European, national and regional levels that are of relevance to a wider audience. The project report section focuses on innovative projects being carried out at a local level (in cities or regions).

One of the key aims of the journal is to seek to bridge the intellectual and geographical 'divides' that currently exist in the field of urban affairs - specifically the North/South divide and the East/West divide and also the divides between distinct academic disciplines.

                <text>

• Pascal Quintard Hofstein : Profondeurs lumineuses

• Bernardo Secchi : Une nouvelle question urbaine (I)

</text>

City and Society, the journal of the Society for Urban, National and Transnational/Global Anthropology, is intended to foster debate and conceptual development in urban, national, and transnational anthropology, particularly in their interrelationships. It seeks to promote communication with related disciplines of interest to members of SUNTA and to develop theory from a comparative perspective.

Articles reflecting applied as well as basic research interests are presented as case studies, comparisons, and syntheses based on literature review. City and Society also publishes individual reviews and review essays on books, films and exhibits. The pages of City and Society are also open to pieces of humanistic orientation, including historical, dialogical, narrative, poetic, and visual.

                <text>

This journal addresses the broad developmental issues of urbanization in the Third World, providing a distinctive African focus on the subject. It examines urban societies from a variety of perspectives, including: issues of local governance, the role of city planning in free market systems, and the impact of multiethnic and multicultural formations in urban affairs.

Urban Forum makes a special effort to examine specific cities in developing nations as legal and cultural entities in their own right. It functions as a core journal in sociology, political science and economics, as well as urban studies.

City & Community (C&C) aims to advance urban sociological theory, promote the highest quality empirical research on communities and urban social life, and encourage sociological perspectives on urban policy. It welcomes contributions that employ quantitative and qualitative methods as well as comparative and historical approaches. The journal encourages manuscripts exploring the interface of global and local issues, locally embedded social interaction and community life, urban culture and the meaning of place, and sociological approaches to urban political economy. The journal also seeks articles on urban spatial arrangements, social impacts of local natural and built environments, urban and rural inequalities, virtual communities, and other topics germane to urban life and communities that will advance general sociological theory.
