This book seeks to demonstrate that, in fact, the new social conception of space developed by French urban sociologist Henri Lefebvre and others in the 1960s and 1970s was actually engendered with the aid of this novel twentieth-century tool of vision. Beginning in the 1930s, French social scientists working in a variety of different academic fields used aerial photos to investigate the spaces of human habitation in French colonies as well as in France. The technique, which was closely linked to the French colonial state and military, helped them to see the connection between spatial organization and social organization. After World War II, these anthropological theories of spatial organization were turned back onto the metropole. Après son engagement en faveur de l’Abstraction lyrique, il s’intéresse dès 1956 à l’architecture et, parallèlement à son intense activité de critique, fonde en 1965 le GIAP (Groupe International d’Architecture Prospective). Un récent partenariat avec les Archives de la critique d’art a permis d’inventorier et de numériser 264 lettres inédites relatives à l’activité de Michel Ragon. Ces lettres apportent une lumière nouvelle sur sa double pratique de critique d’art et d’architecture.</div> <br /> Ce colloque s’attache à explorer la figure du critique, en tant qu’acteur de la scène artistique et "producteur" d’archives livrant à la recherche de précieuses informations sur l’histoire de l’art du second XXe siècle. Il s’agit d’interroger les spécificités de son écriture critique dans ses rapports à l’écriture de l’histoire, à la narration et à la littérature anarchiste, genres auxquels le critique s’est confronté successivement. Les choix défendus par Michel Ragon sont analysés à travers l’étude des différentes facettes qui composent son activité de critique d’art et d’architecture.
