CIEE Announces 2012 International Faculty Development Seminar: "Human Ecology
and the City: Modern Design, Urban Planning and Architecture in Seoul" June 24 - July 3, 2012 Voted the "World Design Capital" in 2010, Seoul has ambitious plans to transform itself into a city focused on art, culture and people and move from "Hard City to Soft City." Not an easy task in this megacity of over 10 million inhabitants, but believable given Korea's economic prowess and reputation for creativity. Already on its way to its goals, Seoul teems with breathtaking buildings, urban spaces and public art. Meeting with faculty from the departments of architecture, design, and engineering at Yonsei University and local architects, designers, and city planners, seminar participants will gain an understanding of the confluence of design, human ecology, and cultural history in Seoul. Lectures include the following topics: * Sustainability in Architecture and Urban Planning * The Link between Modern Design in Seoul and Korean Architectural History * Urban Planning and Politics in Seoul * Revisiting Modern Megastructures in Seoul * Public Space/Public Design CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars are short-term, intensive, interdisciplinary seminars designed for faculty and administrators to explore current international themes 'on-site.' Faculty return from the seminars ready to contribute to campus internationalization through revisions to or development of new courses, presentations to faculty and students, and collaborative relationships with newly established international colleagues.
